Situated on top of a natural hillock surrounded by low lying wet land, with good views in all directions. The site is now enclosed by modern forestry plantation. A stream which marks the townland boundary with Tuitestown curves around the site from N-E approx. 70m N and E of the monument. Present remains consist of a large circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 54m N-S; 49m E-W) enclosed by two well preserved earthen banks with an intervening wide deep fosse and causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2.9m; H 1.6m) at SE. The inner bank is fragmentary in places and the outer bank has been levelled from ENE-ESE. There is evidence of quarrying of the inner bank at NE, where it has been pushed into the fosse. Topsoil had been stripped from a portion of the interior, where fragments of bone were visible at the time of the ASI site visit in 1972. In September, 1933, road widening carried out by Westmeath County Council on the Crookedwood-Castlepollard road uncovered the remains of five Bronze Age crouched inhumations all of which appeared to have been placed into a natural hillock that was reused as a burial mound. The burials lay beneath the summit of this natural hillock or possible burial mound. The road widening operations cut into the side of this hillock revealing the skeletons that were interred 2.4m below the summit of the hill. The first burial (No. 1) was located 8 feet (2.4m) beneath the surface of the ground and consisted of a crouched inhumation with fragments of a bowl food-vessel which was interred into a beehive stone structure, possibly a corbelled cist measuring 4 feet (1.2m) in diameter and 3 feet (0.9m) in height. The head of the skeleton rested on a flat stone about 2 feet (0.6m) square and 8 inches (0.2m) in height. The second burial (No. 2) was that of a child located to the SE of the above burial and was uncovered at a depth of 4 feet (1.2m) beneath the surface of the ground. A third (No. 3). crouched inhumation 7 feet (2.1m) beneath the surface was excavated which had some small stones measuring 10 inches (0.25m) placed around it. The burial was in a crouched position lying on the right side, with head towards N, right hand under the lower jaw and the left before the body. A fourth cremated burial surrounded by large stones was located 4 feet 8 inches (1.4m) beneath the surface to the W of burial No. 3. A fifth burial (No. 5) was discovered 2 yard from Burial No. 3 the following year in 1934 and consisted of a crouched inhumation lying on its right side with head lying close to a large boulder (Ó Ríordáin 1935, 102-12; Waddell 1970, 97, 134). Situated on summit of a steep prominent hill overlooking Lough Derravaragh 630m to the NW. Bronze Age burial mound (WM012-060----) 115m to NNW, ringfort (WM012-062---) 120m to ESE. An oval shaped area (approx. diam. 27m NW-SE) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a slight external fosse. The bank is best preserved at NE, and reduced to a scarp elsewhere. The fosse is visible from SW-W-NNE. There is a possible entrance gap at W. The interior rises slightly towards the centre. Situated on the E face of a prominent hill overlooking Lough Derravaragh to the NW. Ringfort (WM012-061---)120m to WNW, Bronze Age burial mound (WM012-060---) 265m to NW. A sub-circular slightly raised area (approx. diam. 33m WNW-ESE) enclosed by a low earthen bank (max. H 0.75m) and a shallow external fosse. The bank is fragmentary and has several disturbance gaps. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.1m) and causeway (Wth 4.2m; H 0.2m) across the fosse at NE. The interior slopes slightly from WSW-ENE. The fragmentary bank is reduced to a scarp along the E side of the site. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.9m) at N. The interior rises slightly towards the centre and has traces of cultivation ridges. Situated on low marshy ground. Ringfort (WM012-072---) 80m to W. This site has been badly disturbed and largely destroyed by quarrying. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 23.4m NNW-SSE) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a wide fosse. The low bank (H 0.25m) is fragmentary, while the external fosse (Wth 3.4m; D 0.5m) is visible only from S-SW-WSW and at NNW. The interior rises slightly towards the centre and has traces of cultivation ridges. Drains and water channels are visible outside the monument at N and E. Several quarry holes are visible in the interior. Situated on flat pasture with higher ground to N, medieval church (WM012-076----) and graveyard (WM012-076001-) located 220m SSE. The 1659 Down Survey recorded that Taghmon Castle belonged to Sir Thomas Nugent, described as an Irish Papist in 1641 (NLI, MS 723-4). The three storey high tower was entered through a doorway in the west wall now blocked up which gave access to a stone vaulted ground floor, a mural stairs in the south wall gave access to upper floors of the castle. This building appears to have been a small tower house that was possibly reused as the NE angle tower of a levelled bawn wall associated with a 17th century building depicted as Taghmon Castle the remains of which are to the S of the tower as shown on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. On this map the tower is depicted a small freestanding rectangular tower, while Taghmon Castle is shown as a long L-shaped building with possible angle tower at SE angle of castle. Only the S wall and W gable of Taghmon castle survives intact to ground floor level. The S wall of Taghmon Castle appears to have acted as the S wall of the bawn wall. There are no visible remains of the W, N and E walls of this bawn. A single light window is the only feature visible in the S wall of the bawn wall of Taghmon Castle. A broken out fireplace can be seen in the ground floor of the west gable. The remains of broken out wall ovens can be seen in the destroyed embrasures either side of the destroyed fireplace opening. The upper levels of the angle tower on NE angle of bawn wall may have been converted into a dovecote in the post-medieval period. During this period a large walled garden was constructed to the S of Taghmon Castle. The tower was described in 1980 as ‘a small rectangular tower measuring 4m E-W by 6m N-S with a heavy mantle of ivy stands three storeys high. There is an entrance, now only a wide broken gap in the west wall. The lower floor has a vaulted roof and a mural stair leads through the south wall. A small spiral stairs leads from the first floor level to the roof. The stairs is now ruined. The walls of the two upper floors are level with pigeon holes. This appears to be a pigeon house. A small rect [angular] enclosure to the S of this tower has had its interior levelled recently. South of this rectangular enclosure is a large walled bawn or a walled garden. There are three pointed doorways in the walls. These doorways are of roughly dressed limestone. One doorway in the north wall has some brickwork in the wall above the inner face of the arch indicating an 18th or 19th c. date. The style of stonework could support this date. There are remains of buildings along the north wall of this large enclosure. One building has the remains of a large fireplace. There appear to have been buildings stretching north from here to the pigeon house. This area is now marked by a stony rise. The Pigeon House may be of late medieval date. The other walls and remains are very difficult to date. There is a small 19th c. house to the west of the pigeon house’ (SMR File 24/10/1980). A cattle crush has been built up against N face of post medieval garden wall, and concrete walled livestock pens have been built to the N of Taghmon Castle. Immediately to the W of Taghmon Castle are the ruins of post-medieval structures built up against the N face of the bawn wall (CUCAP BDV077/078). The grass covered wall footings of the S and E wall of the chapel are visible (approx. dims. 7m N-S x 8m E-W) standing in the W quadrant of a trapezoidal-shaped ecclesiastical enclosure (WM012-082001-). The wall footings of a small external rectangular annexe (approx. diam. 6m N-S; 4m E-W) are visible adjoining the W end of the chapel. There is an entrance gap (Wth 3m) mid-way along the S wall of the chapel, and the wall footings of two internal walls are also visible. See attached plan of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. A trapezoidal shaped area (approx. dims. 23m N-S; 34m E-W) depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map is enclosed by a bank of earth and stone with an entrance gap (Wth 2m) at WNW, and a second entrance gap (Wth 3.5m) at W. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible crossing the interior from ESE-WNW. A chapel site (WM012-082---) is located in W quadrant of the enclosure. A larger outer roughly oval-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 125m NE-SW x 200m E-W) is visible on the Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011.
