Depicted as a D-shaped earthwork on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Situated on a low NE facing slope of low rise on flat pasture with bogland now planted with trees nearby to NE. Ringfort (WM002-025----) 160m to SSE. D-shaped area (dims. 35m NE-SW; 28.5m NW-SE) with straight side at NW defined by a poorly preserved tree-lined earthen bank mainly reduced to a scarp (H 0.3-0.8m) with slight traces of an external fosse (Wth 2.5-3m; ext. D 0.3m) at NNW. Bank has been ploughed out in NW. Gaps on NW, W & N and in SE - the latter may be original entrance. In the SW corner a very low artificially raised platform or irregular plan which may be a house site (WM002-024001-). There are two old ditch and bank features extending NE from the N & NE sides of site. The whole SE side of the site has been truncated by a modern ditch and field bank. Situated on a slight NE slope, surrounded by very gently undulating land of average to poor pasture. To NE is a wooded hollow which tends to be wet. Possible ringfort (WM002-024----) located 160m to NW. Cluster of farm buildings 30m to SSE as depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. No surface remains visible of levelled ringfort. Cropmark of monument visible on Digital Globe aerial photographs taken November 2011. Described in 1973 as a much denuded ringfort consisting of a roughly circular area (approx. diam. 31m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) defined by a low poorly preserved earthen bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.05m; ext. H 0.3m) with slight remains of an external fosse (Wth 4.2m; D 0.25m), no entrance feature visible. A section of the fosse and bank have been cut away on the SE. Field boundary running NE-SE cuts across the E side of the monument. Situated atop low rise of ground with church (WM002-028---) and graveyard (WM002-028001-) 135m to SE. Good views of the surrounding countryside in all directions. Anglo-Norman motte and bailey castle known as the castle of Magh-Breacruighe [Caislén Moighe Brecroige/Moybrekry] belonging to John de La Mare [Delamarr/Delamer]. In 1295 the castle was, ‘razed to the ground by Jeffrey O’Ferrall’ (AFM, 465). O’Donovan incorrectly suggested that the castle (LF023-076----) in the townland of Barry, Co. Longford may have been the castle of Magh Breacruighe. In 1297 the castle of ‘Moybrekry’ in Co. Westmeath was in the possession of John de La Mare (Cal. justic. rolls, Ire. Edw. I, 78). In 1455 ‘Caislen-na-Sraide’ [castle of the street] was demolished by O’Farrell; and the son of Mac Herbert was slain by him while taking the castle’ (AFM, 995). It is not clear if this is a reference to a stone castle located on the summit of the motte and bailey castle or to a second castle (WM002-029----) at a different location in the village of Street which has not been precisely identified. In 1464 the Annals recorded that the ‘Sraid of Moybrecray [was] burnt by Baron Delvna, both churches and houses, and many preying and burning committed betwixt them, to witt, the Nugents and Herberts’ (AFM, 1036). Present remains consist of a tree-covered high steep-sided mound or motte (H 7m; base diam. c. 42m) the base of which is enclosed by a fosse (Wth 5m-7.5m; ext. D 0.7-1.1m) with remains of a much degraded rectangular-shaped bailey (dims. C. 30m NE-SW; 21.5m NW-SE) visible as a low rise of ground defined by a scarp (H 0.5-1m) to SE. The top of the motte (diam. 14m) has a slightly concave shape. There is evidence of external stone facing visible along the steep sided faces of the motte which is visible in places where mortared stone can be seen protruding from the face of the motte. There is also evidence of mortared stone protruding from the perimeter of the summit of the motte which is suggestive of an enclosing wall or structure standing on top of the motte. Detached three-bay two-storey farm house, built c.1850, with a central gable-fronted entrance porch to the main façade (east) with a two-storey return to the rear (west). Pitched natural slate roof having raised verges to gable ends and a pair of central rendered chimneystacks. Roughcast lime rendered walls. Square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor openings and replacement windows elsewhere. Segmental-headed doorcase to porch having a timber panelled door with a plain overlight above. Set well back from road in mature grounds with a substantial complex of rubble stone outbuildings to the rear having pitched natural slate roofs.
