Situated on NE side of a hill with good views to N, E and S. Bowl-barrow (overall diam. 26m NW-SE) consisting of a small circular round-topped mound (diam. 8m; H 2m) enclosed by a shallow poorly preserved fosse with remains of a low outer bank. Some disturbance has been caused to the site by digging on the NE side of the mound, old trees growing along top of bank which has been almost totally levelled on W side. Situated on an irregular-shaped island (dims. 42m E-W; 35m N-S) possibly a crannóg in the centre of Waterstown Lough, which has been greatly reduced in size due to drainage. Cox (1972, 29) mentions that in the year 1393 O’ Maelachlainn and his allies broke down the castle of Baile Bhaiter [Waterstown], which stood on an island in a small lake near Glasson, Co Westmeath. Monument described in 1981 as a roughly square-shaped tower defined by rubble walls standing on marshy land which was once the centre of a much larger lake as depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. There is no cut stone visible, although any features could be obscured by the heavy overgrowth. There are traces of a few horizontal beams off the northern shoreline of the island, which may have come from the castle. The castle was probably built on the site of a crannóg (WM022-043001-). An irregular-shaped island (dims. 42m E-W; 35m N-S) on top of which stood the castle of 'Baile Bhaiter' (WM022-043----) in the centre of Waterstown Lough now greatly reduced in size by drainage. Monument described in 1981 as a possible crannóg on the site of the present castle. There is a natural core to the island to support the foundations of a crannóg, however there is additional land retirement at the edges of the island, which probably pre-dates the building of the castle. An NMI finds index for this monument mentions the discovery of an iron arrow head (Reg. No. 1934: 488) which may be related to this site (SMR file). This small island may have been reused as in the case of Clogh Oughter in Co. Cavan or Island McHugh in Co. Tyrone. Situated in grassland on top of Carraun Hill overlooking Waterstown Lough 330m to the S. The monument stands on the landscaped demesne of Waterstown House located 570m to SW as depicted on first ed. OS 6-inch map. On this map the monument is located in a woodland depicted as Carraun Hill Wood which no longer survives. A rabbit burrow is depicted on the OS map in the field immediately to the E and a grotto is depicted standing beside the pathway to the S of the monument. A castle (WM022-043----) standing in the centre of Waterstown Lough is 850m to the S. A curvilinear pathway is depicted encircling the base of the monument on the first edition OS 6-inch map. Present remains consists of a hilltop enclosure or possible ringfort visible on aerial photograph taken by Leo Swan (LS-AS-35CT_00002_24) consisting of a raised flat-topped platform defined by a scarp and enclosing fosse with possible external bank. - Waterstown House, farmyard complex, stables, 1740–1750, Regional interest, registry number 15314001, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15314001. Complex of multi-bay two-storey outbuildings/stable block arranged around a central courtyard, built c.1745, having central carriage arches to the east and west ranges. Bellcote over entrance to east side and a tower with a Diocletian opening to internal face of entrance arch to the west. Originally served Waterstown House (15314014), now out of use. Pitched and hipped natural slate roofs with brick chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Lime roughcast rendered walls over rubble stone construction with brick dressings to the openings. Square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and the remains of timber sliding sash windows. Loop hole openings to the first floor of all ranges. Square-headed doorways having remains of timber battened doors. Arcade of round-headed carriage arches to the inner face of range to the north. Located to south west of the ruins of Waterstown House (15314014) and to the south of Glassan.

Freestanding three-stage pigeon house and 'eye-catcher', built c.1749, comprising a single-storey block on square-plan to the base surmounted by a single-storey section on octagonal plan and terminated by a spire on octagonal plan. Later in use as a summerhouse and now out of use. Wrought-iron weathervane over spire. Constructed of rubble limestone with cut stone and brick dressings to the openings and lined internally with brick. Round-headed and square-headed openings to base (some infilled) with oculus openings to north and south faces, square-headed recesses to each face of octagonal tower with small square-headed openings with landing ledges above to spire. Projecting cut stone string course to base section at springing point of round-headed arches. Cross-vaulted ceiling to interior with trapdoor leading to pigeon loft. Located in a prominent position in the landscape on a small hill to the west of the remains of Waterstown House (15314014).
- Waterstown House, country house, 1740–1750, Regional interest, registry number 15314014, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15314014. Detached seven-bay three-storey over basement Palladian style country house on rectangular plan, constructed c.1745. Now a roofless, derelict and partially collapsed shell. Originally had a shallow hipped roof hidden behind a high parapet with a moulded cut stone eaves cornice, roof now collapsed. Constructed of ashlar limestone (over brick and limestone rubble core) with ashlar limestone trim including a projecting chamfered ashlar string course separating the basement level from the ground floor. Rubble limestone construction to basement. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills, cut stone Gibbsian surrounds to ground floor and with cut stone lugged surrounds above to first and second floor openings. Segmental-headed openings with cut stone surrounds having projecting keystones to basement level. Waterstown originally had a pedimented doorcase to the centre of the north elevation, removed in 1928. Sunken courtyard and stores survive to east side and rubble limestone tunnel leads from basement towards farm buildings (15314001) on west side. Interior now gutted but evidence of early plaster panelling to stair hall, corner fireplaces and timber floor joists remain. Underground brick chambers lead to basement. Located in prominent position to the southeast of the village of Glassan in rolling mature grounds, now in use as farmland.
- Waterstown House, worker's house, 1840–1880, Regional interest, registry number 15314015, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15314015. Detached two-bay two-storey former estate worker's house on L-shaped plan, built c.1860, having gable-fronted single-bay two-storey sections to both the south and west facing elevations. Now in use as a private dwelling with modern single-storey flat-roofed extensions to the east and the north. Pitched natural slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, a projecting brick eaves course to the west-facing gable, a central brick chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods. Cut stone final to projecting gable-fronted section to the south. Constructed of rubble limestone with flush dressed stone quoins to the corners and brick dressing to the openings. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and replacement windows. Canted window opening to south gable-fronted section. Square-headed door opening with replacement door to west elevation. Set in own grounds to south of remains of walled garden (15314016) and to northeast of the remains of Waterstown House (15314014) in a slight depression in the landscape. Single-storey rubble limestone outbuildings having a pitched natural slate roof and square-headed openings with brick dressings rear (east).
- Waterstown House, walled garden, 1745–1755, National interest, registry number 15314016, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15314016. Extensive complex of walled gardens on rectangular plan associated with Waterstown House (15314014), built c.1750, having a pedimented gateway to the centre of the south facing elevation. Now in use as a farmyard. Walled garden is divided into a number of sections by internal party walls, some of with infilled brick arcades and others have segmental recesses along length creating a 'corrugated' profile in plan. Outer walls constructed with rubble limestone and lined internally with brick. Inner walls and dividing walls constructed or lined by brick. Main entrance gate to the centre of the south elevation comprises a pedimented round-headed carriage arch with projecting keystone, brick cornice and raised brick block-and-start surrounds. Pediment pierced by a Diocletian opening with projecting keystone and raised brick block-and-start surrounds. Main entrance flanked to either side (east and west) by sections of brick wall with segmental-headed pedestrian entrances and terminated by single-storey brick pavilions with hipped slate roofs. Located to the northeast of the remains of Waterstown House (15314014) on a gentle south-facing slope.
- Waterstown House, grotto, 1760–1800, Regional interest, registry number 15314018, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15314018. A three-bay gable-fronted single-storey grotto/hermitage (on rectangular-plan) associated with Waterstown House (15314014), erected c.1780. Built into the side of a south-facing hill with roof now partially collapsed. Constructed using irregular water-worn limestone rubble and overgrown with ivy. Pointed arched window openings to either side of central pointed-arched doorway to the centre of the south elevation. Three niches to north side of interior and the remains of a fireplace to the west side. Located to the north of the ruins of Waterstown House, overlooking a lake to the south. Stone tablet adjacent to grotto reads ' On Sunday the 6th of January 1839, Ireland was visited with a tremendous hurricane which destroyed much of the fine old timber of this demesne'.
