Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and resolved (E4347) by A. Mulcahy as Askunshin 3 during the testing phase (Hardy et al. 2010, 121-2). It is located in a slight col between a low hill c. 860m to the NNW and a slight rise c. 250m to the SSE. It proved to be a single pit (dims 0.49m x 0.42m; D 0.08m) filled with two deposits, both containing burnt bone. The bone proved to be animal rather than human, but a sample from the lower fill produced a C14 determination of Cal. BC 1403-1262. The pits (WX019-035----) are c. 260m to the NE. (Mulcahy 2012; 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 28 November, 2013 - WX019-035: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX019-035----. Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme, and set aside for resolution as Askunshin 2 (Hardy et al. 2010, 120-1). It is located on a slight N-facing slope in a slight col between a low hill c. 900m to the NW and a slight rise c. 400m to the SW. It was fully excavated (E4222) by Y. Whitty when two oval pits (dims 1.12m x 0.62m; D 0.62m: 1.1m x 0.7m; D 0.17m) 0.7m apart were uncovered. A smaller pit (diam. 0.35-0.4m) was just to the E of the second pit and contained three inverted and broken prehistoric pots that were block-lifted for conservation, the results which are not yet available. The hearth and pits (WX019-036----) are c. 100m to the NE, although they may be wholly unrelated, and the pit-burial (WX019-034----), c. 260m to the SW may be more relevant. (Hull and Hardy 2012; Whitty 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 28 November, 2013 - WX019-036: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX019-036----. Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme, and set aside for resolution as Askunshin 1 (Hardy et al. 2010, 120-1). It is located on a slight N-facing slope in a slight col between a low hill c. 900m to the NW and a slight rise c. 400m to the SW. It was fully excavated (E4221) by Y. Whitty when a hearth (dims 0.7m x 0.66m; T 0.18m) was recorded with three stake-holes nearby together with a layer of re-deposited hearth material. There was a cluster of six post-holes in a confined area (dims c. 3m x c. 3m) near a pit (diam. 0.7m x 0.45m; D 0.13m) c. 4m to the W but no pattern was discernible, and there were other isolated pits and post-holes. Three sherds of glazed red earthenware from the topsoil might provide the only dating evidence. The pits (WX016-035----) are c. 100m to the SW, although they might be completely unrelated. (McNamara and Taylor 2011; Whitty 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 28 Nivember, 2013 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Askunshin. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: About 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
