Situated on a shelf with a small SW-NE valley c. 70m to the SW and a bend in the W-E Boro River at its most southerly point is c. 250m to the N. The parish church of Kilcowanmore had been granted by the Keatings to the Knights Hospitalers by 1338 (Brooks 1950, 115). According to a Visitation by Thomas Ram, the Protestant bishop of Ferns, in 1615 Robert Dreighan was the priest, but the church and chancel were in need of repair (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 270). It is within a raised subrectangular graveyard (dims. c. 70m E-W; c. 45m N-S) defined by a stone-faced scarp and hedge which is bordered by a N-S road and its bank at W. It is possibly on the site of an early monastic church. The single cell church is oriented ESE-WNW (dims. 21.5m x 7m) with only the W wall surviving to the full height with good dressed quoins in a green stone. There are possible entrances towards the W end of the N and S walls. The remains of a later building (dims. c. 8m N-S; 4m E-W), represented by the base of the W and E walls, are built over the E end of the church. A fragment of a small granite cross (dims. 0.35m x 0.25m; T 7-9cm) with recessed arcs at the angles of the crux was recorded in 1987 but was missing in 1999. A medieval grave cover (L 1.63m; Wth 0.41-0.53m) with an incised eight-pointed cross was in the graveyard in 1999 but could not be found in 2012. St Cowan's Well, where patterns were held on 3rd February in the 1920s (Sheil 1920, 115), lies c. 80m to the SW. Marked on the 1839 and 1925 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described as St. Cowan’s Well in both. It is situated in a small SE-NW valley with two streams that join together c. 10m to the W and join the W-E Boro River c. 270m to the NW at that river’s most southerly point. St. Cowan, or St. Cuán of Airbhre, now probably Kilcowan (WX046-042001-) in Bargy barony, is recorded in the life of St. Munna of Taghmon (Ó Riain 2011, 239). His pattern is recorded on the 6th July in the martyrologies, but was celebrated here at one time on the 3rd of February (Sheil 1921, 15). The well is now a rectangular feature (dims. 1.1m NW-SE x 1.05m NE-SW; D 0.5m) set into the concrete apron surrounding a nearby Lourdes grotto. The well is partly set into the facing on the NW side of a road bridge over the SW stream. There is a round-headed alcove (Wth 0.19m; H 0.38m; D 0.29m) with some offerings in this wall above the well. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 27 August, 2012

Kilcowanmore or Ballybrennan was held by half a knight’s fee by Adam Keating from William de Valence in 1247 and the Keatings continued in possession into the 16th century (Brooks , 11, 115-6). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Luke Kaeating owned 500 acres in Ballybrittas in 1641 while Thomas Fitz Harris owned a thousand acres in Ballybrennan, Carriggenjenane (Carrigunane) and Tomfarnine (Tomfarney) townlands. However, there is no record of a castle at Ballybrennan (Simington 1953, 218-9). The location is marked 'Castle (Site of)' on the 1839 and 1925 eds of the OS 6 inch maps. There is a mound (diam. c. 25m; H c. 1m) at the site which must contain the foundations of the castle, but it is largely obscured by spoil from land reclamation. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). Detached three-bay three-storey farmhouse, extant 1798, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey gabled advanced porch to ground floor; single-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey central return (west). Vacated, 1977. Derelict, 1986. Renovated, 2001. Replacement hipped slate roof; replacement hipped slate roof (west), clay ridge tiles, paired cement rendered central chimney stacks having corbelled stepped stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta pots, and uPVC rainwater goods on rendered slate flagged eaves. Replacement cement rendered walls. Elliptical-headed central door opening with timber mullions supporting timber transom, and concealed dressings framing replacement timber panelled door having sidelights on panelled risers below fanlight. Square-headed window openings in tripartite arrangement with cut-granite sills, timber mullions, and concealed dressings framing replacement six-over-six or three-over-six (top floor) timber sash windows having two-over-two or one-over-two (top floor) sidelights. Square-headed window openings (west) with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement six-over-six timber sash windows. Set in wooded grounds.
