Situated on top of Ballybuckley hill that rises from the E edge of a plateau between itself and Bree Hill c. 1.5km to the W and Carrig Hill c. 1km to the NW but with wide views to the E of the N-S River Slaney that is c. 2.7 km distant. This is a grass-covered area (diam. c. 140m N-S; c. 140m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 9-11m; int. H 0.6-1m; ext. H 1.4-2.2m). The bank is replaced by a stone-clad field bank NW-NE and there is an outer field bank NE-SSW, but there is no evidence of a fosse. There are modern entrances at NW, NE and S. Archaeological testing (07E0397) in the area of a proposed quarry immediately E and S of hillfort (WX025-034----) concentrated on locations with geophysical anomalies. A collection of linear features, including a stone-lined drain, occurred at one point. The character of the site is not clear but many of the features contained Leinster cooking ware. Detached three-bay double-height single-cell Board of First Fruits Church of Ireland church, built 1825-7; consecrated 1828, on a rectangular plan with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed vestries centred on single-bay two-stage tower to entrance (west) front on a square plan. "Improved", 1832, producing present composition. "Restored", 2003. Pitched slate roof with lichen-covered clay ridge tiles, cut-granite "saddleback" coping to gables on cut-granite kneelers including cut-granite "saddleback" coping to gable to chancel (east) on cut-granite kneelers with cut-granite octagonal pinnacle to apex, and cast-iron rainwater goods on cut-granite eaves retaining cast-iron octagonal or ogee hoppers and downpipes. Slate hung walls; fine roughcast surface finish to tower on lichen-spotted cut-granite chamfered plinth with cut-granite "Cavetto" stringcourse (bell stage) supporting cut-granite octagonal pinnacles centred on battlemented parapets having cut-granite "saddleback" coping. Pointed-arch window openings with Y-mullions, and rendered cut-granite surrounds having chamfered reveals framing fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on square glazing bars. Pointed-arch window opening to chancel (east) with Y-mullions, and rendered cut-granite surround having chamfered reveals framing storm glazing over fixes-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on square glazing bars. Tudor-headed door opening to tower with cut-granite step threshold, and cut-granite surround having chamfered reveals with hood moulding over framing timber boarded or tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors having overpanels. Pointed-arch opening (bell stage), cut-granite surround having chamfered reveals with hood moulding over framing applied timber Y-mullions over louvered timber fitting. Interior including vestibule (west); square-headed door opening into nave with timber panelled double doors; full-height interior with quatrefoil-detailed memorial baptismal font (1877) on an octagonal plan on clustered colonette pedestal, tessellated glazed terracotta tiled central aisle between Gothic-style timber pews, cut-white marble Classical-style wall monuments (----), trefoil-perforated Gothic-style timber pulpit on an octagonal plan with timber clerk's desk, encaustic tiled stepped dais to chancel (east) with wrought iron-detailed barley twist balusters supporting carved timber communion railing centred on Gothic-style altar below frosted glass "East Window", and vaulted ceiling on moulded plasterwork cornice. Detached five-bay single-storey Church of Ireland glebe house, extant 1852, on an F-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey projecting porch abutting two-bay single-storey projecting end bay; four-bay (north) or two-bay (south) single-storey side elevations with four-bay single-storey rear (east) elevation. Occupied, 1911. Renovated, ----, to accommodate continued private residential use. Replacement hipped artificial slate roof on an F-shaped plan with concrete ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks having stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta tapered pots, and uPVC rainwater goods on slightly overhanging timber box eaves having beaded consoles retaining cast-iron octagonal or ogee hoppers and downpipes. Rendered walls on rendered plinth with rendered band to eaves. Square-headed central door opening approached by flight of four concrete steps with concealed dressings framing replacement timber panelled door having sidelights on panelled risers below overlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing six-over-six timber sash windows.
