H 0.5-0.7m; ext. H 1.2-1.4m) on the E side and adjacent parts of the N and S sides. There are flat-bottomed moats (Wth of top 4-5.5m; Wth of base 1.7-3.5m; ext. D 1-1.8m) on each side that are fed from springs just to the E, and a leat leads from the SW angle towards the stream. In the N part of the interior is the remains of a stone-walled building (int. dims. 18m E-W; 4.5m N-S) defined by walls (Wth 1m; H 0.5m) obscured by the spread of cairn material. It is not visible at ground level in a cereal crop but there is a slight bend (C c. 20m) in a field bank at W. Marked as a small D-shaped embanked enclosure (ext. dims. c. 25m NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE) truncated by a WNW-ESE lane at S on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and located in the bottom of a steep-sided SE-NW valley with the headwaters of a stream just to the S. It is visible at ground level as a slightly dished grass-covered area (diam. c. 30m). It may have been a rath. According to John O’Donovan writing c. 1840 ‘Burns Well’ had been a place where the stations were performed at one time, but the name of the saint was forgotten (O’Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 258). There is no evidence of a well in a pasture field. Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, extant 1840, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch to ground floor. "Improved", pre-1902, producing present composition. Sold, 1910. Occupied, 1911. Renovated, ----. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having stringcourses below capping supporting yellow terracotta octagonal or tapered pots, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards. Replacement cement rendered, ruled and lined walls bellcast over rendered plinth with rusticated rendered piers to corners. Elliptical- or segmental-headed central door opening into farmhouse with concealed dressings framing timber panelled door having sidelights below fanlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and cement rendered "bas-relief" surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with timber panelled shutters to window openings.
