Marked as an intact structure (dims. c. 15m N-S; c. 10m E-W), which is described in gothic lettering as the ruin of a Castle on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated towards the bottom of a N-facing slope. This may be the ‘castle of Scarke’ mentioned in the description of the bounds of Ballyanne parish (Simington 1953, 204), but there are no other references to it, There are no visible remains at ground level in a small wood. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Located on a slight N-facing slope. Centre-line testing (E4067) in advance of the N25 New Ross by-pass identified a spread of broken and burnt stone that was set aside for resolution as Berkeley 1 (Doyle et al 2010, 43-4). When it was fully excavated (E4120) the burnt stone layer (dims 7.4m x 6.6m; T 0.12m) was overlying a second burnt stone layer (dims 3.65m NW-SE; 2.2.1m NE-SW; max. T 8cm) that was W of a rectangular trough (dims 2.67m WNW-ESE; 1.73m NNE-SSW; D 0.28m) which had a flat base and three post-holes on the N side. A NE-SW linear cut (Wth c. 3m) is NW of the trough and appears to lie under the burnt mound material (Clark and Hackett 2010f, 8-9; Hackett 2013). Located on a slight NW-facing slope. Centre-line testing (E4067) in advance of the N25 New Ross by-pass identified a spread of broken and burnt stone that was set aside for resolution as Berkeley 2 (Doyle et al 2010, 44). When it was excavated (E4121) it proved to be a rectangular trough (dims 2.7m E-W; 2.1m N-S; D 0.5m) with 52 associated stake-holes and post-holes which had a circular pit (diam. 2.8-3m; D 0.54m) that was filled with silty clays and small amounts of charcoal immediately to the E. A small spread of burnt and broken stones (4.5m NNW-SSE; 2m ENE-WSW; D 0.1m) was W of the trough and had been cut by a pit (dims 1.57m E-W; 1.27m N-S; D 0.48m). There was a small pit (dims 0.9m N-S; 0.7m E-W; D 0.44m) 2.6m to the N. Located on a slight N-facing slope. Centre-line testing (E4067) in advance of the N25 New Ross by-pass identified an anomaly that was set aside for resolution as Berkeley 3 (Doyle et al 2010, 44). When it was excavated (E4122) it proved to be an unenclosed flat cemetery consisting of 25 possible token cremation pit-burials located in a concentrated area (dims c. 10m x c. 10m), with some post-holes and stake-holes. The burials were in small pits (diam. c. 0.35-0.7m; D c. 0.2m) and three phases of activity are identified. Three of the pits, together with some stake-holes and post-holes, can be associated with the N terminal of a ditch (Wth 0.65m; D 0.2m; visible L 4m NW-SE). Phase 2 was identified as a kidney-shaped layer of introduced red-brown silty clay (dims 16m E-W; 9m N-S; max. T 0.15m), which overly the earlier features and was cut by the remaining features of phase 3, which consisted of 17 possible burials and a post-hole. Some features outside the introduced layer, including five possible cremation burials, could belong to any phase (Hackett 2010, 7-13; Hackett 2013).
