Marked on the 1839 and 1925 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described as St. Edan’s Well on both in gothic lettering, but it is more correctly known as St. Aidan’s Well, after St. Aidan of Ferns (Murphy c. 1994, 13, 196-201). It is situated in a small NW-SE valley at the headwaters of a NW-SE stream. According to John O’Donovan writing c. 1840 the pattern was not celebrated and even the date was forgotten (O’Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 354). The well is not recognised with certainty but a large granite stone (dims 0.96m x 0.88m; T 0.2-0.3m) is blocking a well on the N side of the stream. Situated on the NE side of a small NW-SE stream, which is c. 30m to the SW. This is the site of the parish church of Clongeen. According to a Visitation by Thomas Ram, the Protestant bishop of Ferns, in 1615 Robert Dreighan was the curate, and the church and chancel were in repair (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 271). John O'Donovan writing c. 1840 recorded that no trace of the old church was visible (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 354). A multiple cresset stone with at least 5 cups (diam. 12-16cm; D 4-8cm) on three facets of an oblong sandstone piece (dims 0.43m x 0.34m; H 0.22m) is in the raised rectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m E-W; c. 30m N-S) defined by masonry walls. St Edan's Well (WX040-026----) is c. 350m to the NW. Archaeological testing identified features (WX040-097004-) c. 60m to the N, and a burnt mound (WX040-097002-). Other features (WX040-097003-), elements of a field system (WX040-097001-) and a possible mill-race (WX040-097005-) were identified in testing c. 100m to the S, on the other side of the stream. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Marked as a rectangular bivallate enclosure (ext. dims. c. 50m E-W; c. 45m N-S) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch mpa, it is located towards the bottom of a gentle E-facing slope with the headwaters of a small N-S stream c. 170m to the E. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 27m N-S; c. 27m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (at N: Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.4m) SW-NE and a scarp H 0.5-0.9m) elsewhere with an external flat bottomed but dry fosse (Wth of top 4-8m; Wth of base 2m at S to 4m at N; ext. D 0.9m at E to 1.8m at N) and an outer overgrown bank (Wth 2-4m; ext. H 1-2m), that has an outer drain NW-SE. The interior has been quarried with the old spoil mound obscuring the inner bank and fosse at W. An entrance (Wth 3.3m) through the outer bank at W is probably modern and uses the spoil as a causeway. It is listed as a moated site (Barry 1977. 218, WX 38), but is probably a rath. Situated in the valley of a NW-SE stream, on the SW bank. Archaeological testing (03E1395) of an extensive area (dims c. 200m E-W; c. 150m N-S) in advance of development identified numerous pits, gullies and furrows that are part of a field system of 17th or 18th century date, most of which would be preserved under green areas (McLoughlin 2006a). Further testing (06E0187) confirmed the extent and date of the fields but the burnt mound (WX040-097002-), a possible mill-race (WX040-097005-) and other features (WX040-097004-) also came to light (McLoughlin 2006b). Situated on the SW bank of a NW-SE stream. Archaeological testing (06E0187) in advance of development uncovered a layer of burnt stone and charcoal-rich clay (L c. 14m; T 0.1m) lying directly on subsoil beneath c. 0.2-0.3m of topsoil (McLoughlin 2006b, 7-8). This was further investigated (06E0834) and appears to have been an area where limestone was crushed and shattered with heat, perhaps preparatory to inclusion in a lime-kiln (Purcell 2009).
