- WX024-049: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX024-049----. Marked as a subcircular bivallate enclosure (ext. dims. c. 90m E-W; c. 80m N-S) called ‘Rathnacrue’ on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a trivallate enclosure (ext. dims. c. 100m N-S; c. 90m E-W) on the 1925 ed. but the central and outer banks are missing N-SE on this map. It was described in the 1940s as a subcircular area (dims. 50m E-W; c. 45m N-S) surrounded by three banks and intervening fosses (SMR file). It has been removed since then but traces of two fosses (Wth 1-2m; D 0.1-0.2m) c. 5m apart were still evident in 1987 around a grass-covered area (int. diam. 61m NE-SW; 59m NW-SE). It is visible as a cropmark of a bivallate enclosure on aerial photographs (ASIAP (271) 18-21) and digital aerial photographs (WX024-049_1 to_9) taken in 2006. The cropmark is also visible on the OSI series of aerial photographs (2000, 2005). Marked faintly as a circular feature (diam. c. 35m) and described as 'site of Rath' on the1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated just off the N edge of a plateau. The location is bisected by a NNW-SSE field bank but nothing is visible at ground level in pasture and a cereal crop. Located on a fairly level plateau. It is described in 1987 as a subcircular grass and scrub-covered area (dims. 39m E-W; 35.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5-5.5m; int. H 0.5-1m; ext. H 1.3-1.8m), with an outer fosse (Wth of top 4-5m; D 1.4-1.5m) SW-N-E and an external bank or field bank (Wth 4m; ext. H 0.8-1m) SW-N. The entrance (Wth 2m) and causeway (Wth 4m) are at NE. Marked as a circular embanked enclosure on the 1839 (ext. diam. c. 50m) and 1925 (ext. diam. c. 30m) eds of the OS 6-inch map, and located just off the summit of a broad hill on a slight N-facing slope. No feature is visible at ground level in a harvested cereal crop. Ringfort (WX030-005----) is c. 100m to the S. Described in gothic lettering as Toberaphuca – the Ghost’s well - on the 1839 and 1925 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated towards the bottom of a NW-facing slope. This may be the site of the parish church of Clonleigh parish situated on a slight N-facing slope and on the N side of a minor E-W road. No other church site is known within this small parish. According to a Visitation by Thomas Ram, the Protestant bishop of Ferns, in 1615 it was a part of Dunbrody, but nothing of the church remained (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 271). The church is depicted as a rectangular structure (dims. c. 15m E-W; c. 8m N-S) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as the site of a church in gothic lettering. It is mentioned by John O’Donovan writing c. 1840 but it is thought not to have had a graveyard (O’Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 345). A rectangular structure (dims. c. 20m E-W; c. 8m N-S) defined by low earthen banks (H c. 0.6m) survived into the 1950s (SMR file). It is not now visible at around level in pasture. Marked as D-shaped embanked enclosure (ext. dims. c. 45m E-W; c. 30m N-S) truncated by an E-W road boundary at N on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated on a sight N-facing slope and is visible on aerial photographs (MM (3) 26, 31-4) as a double ditched cropmark enclosure (max. ext. diam. c. 50m E-W) truncated by the roadway at N.
