It is visible as a circular cropmark (diam. c. 45m) defined by a single fosse feature with an entrance gap at the E on aerial photograph (CUCAP, BDJ 54). It is visible at ground level in pasture. Situated on a steep SE-facing slope down to the NE-SW River Slaney that is c. 300m distant. The oblique aerial photograph (CUCAP, AJP 83) shows the cropmark of a line (L c. 125m NW-SE) of pits (diam. c. 2m) placed c. 5m apart. These pits mark the line of a field boundary marked on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6 inch map and probably represent a line of ornamental trees close to a farmhouse. Described as a holy well only on the 1940 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and located at the bottom of a steep E-facing wooded and overgrown scarp down to the flood-plain of the N-S River Slaney which is c. 150m to the E. This is natural spring with no evidence of any structure or that it was ever venerated. Marked as the site of a church on the 1839 and 1940 eds. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated at the bottom of a steep, wooded scarp down to the flood-plain of the N-S River Slaney, which is c. 120m to the E. This is a rubble-strewn and overgrown area (dims. 17m E-W; 14m N-S) in a pasture field with the foundations of some walls visible. An arc of an ecclesiastical enclosure survives as a scarp NNE-ESE (C 78m) just to the E. There is no evidence of burial. The holy well (WX020-020----) is c. 40m SW of the church. Situated on the flood-plain of the NE-SW River Slaney, backing onto the river at SE. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) is visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP, BDJ 48) separated from the cropmark of an outer fosse by 15m to 25m. The outer enclosure backs onto the River Slaney (max. ext. dim. c. 80m). It is not visible at ground level in pasture, but the cropmark is visible on the OSI series of aerial photographs (2005). - WX020-094: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX020-094----. Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Kilcannon 2 (Hardy et al. 2010, 105-06). It is situated at the bottom of a NW-facing slope and in the fold of a SW-NE stream c. 820m from where the stream debouches into a N-S section of the River Slaney. The stream is now channelled c. 10m to the NW at the monument, but its original course is marked on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It was excavated (E4284) by B. Sutton who recorded a horseshoe-shaped mound of broken and burnt stone (dims 14m x 13.8m; max. T 0.8m) open to the SE. The rectangular trough (dims 3.2m N-S; 1.4m E-W; D 0.52m) was just missed by a SW-NE drain at S, but the trough was timber-lined and timber-based. Two side-planks, two end planks, two from the base and two supporting timbers survived, some with lap-joints enabling the timbers to fasten against each other. Some of the timbers were probably re-used, and this is supported by the dendrochronological evidence as two of the five timbers examined have end-dates earlier than the 1535 BC +- 9 years end-dates of the other timbers, which provide a date for the trough. The single C14 date of Cal. BC 1601-1444 from burnt mound material brackets this date. Fulacht fia (WX020-095----) is c. 65m to the NE, and the unrelated pits (WX020-096----) are c. 175m to the SE. Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Kilcannon 1 (Hardy et al. 2010, 105). It is situated at the bottom of a NW-facing slope and in the fold of a SW-NE stream c. 770m from where the stream debouches into a N-S section of the River Slaney. The stream is now channelled c. 20m to the NW at the monument, but its original course is marked on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It was excavated (E4283) by B. Sutton who recorded upper (dims 9.4m x 9.15m; max. T 0.35m) and lower (dims 11m x 10m; T 0.2m) deposits of burnt stone that probably extend outside the excavated area to the SW under a post-medieval field bank. The mound was cut severely by five drains, but it overlay an oval trough (dims 1.5m N-S; 0.6m E-W; D 0.15m), and the base of an oval trough (dims 1.4m NE-SW; 1m NE-SW; D 0.1m) is c. 1.4m to the SE. The second trough was stone-lined, and stones extended outside it to the NW, perhaps providing a paved path leading to the first trough. Just 2-4m NE of the second trough was a cluster of 74 stake-holes, which are interpreted as a possible wind-break. Fulacht fia (WX020-094----) is c. 65m to the SW. Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Kilcannon 3 (Hardy et al. 2010, 106-07). It is situated on a N-facing slope of a NE-SW ridge with a small SW-NE stream c. 170m to the NW. Full excavation (E4242) by B. Sutton recorded two pits. One pit (diam. 0.38m; D 0.07m) contained a sandy silt with charcoal inclusions and some slag. This produced a C14 date of cal. BC 384-205. The adjacent pit (dims 0.5m x 0.4m; D 0.3m) had a single fill consisting of a clay-silt with some charcoal. The unrelated fulachta fia (WX020-094----; WX020-095----) are c. 175m to the NW, and fulacht fia (WX020-097----) is c. 225m to the SSE. Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Kilcannon 4 (Hardy et al. 2010, 18-19). It is situated on a slight rise on the E-facing slope of a NE-SW ridge overlooking the N-S River Slaney, which is c. 500m to the E. Full excavation (E4194) by C. Hardy recorded three oval pits (dims 2.3m x 1.4m; D 0.4m: 1.2m x 0.84m; D 0.37m: 3.74m x 2.33m; D 0.34m), all of which contained some element of broken and burnt stone, and they probably represent the troughs of a fulacht fia. The secondary fill of the first pit produced a C14 date of cal. BC 1444-1315. The pits (WX020-096----) are c. 225m to the NNW. Located towards the bottom of a SE-facing slope with a NE-SW section of the River Slaney c. 140m to the SE. The cropmark of a subrectangular area (int. dims c. 35m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW; ext. dims c. 50m NW-SE; c. 40m NE-SW) defined by two fosses is visible only on Google Earth (14/07/2018). Located on a gentle E-facing slope. The cropmark of a large enclosure (diam. c. 78m N-S; c. 74m E-W) defined by a single fosse or ditch is visible only on Google Earth (14/07/2018). The perimeter is incorporated in a notch in a N-S field bank at E, and there is a wide gap (Wth c. 20m) at NE. It was first reported by Simon Dowling. Archaeological monitoring (22E0440) by Y. Whitty of a water-mains c. 35m to the W produced no related material (excavations.ie 2022:169). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Kilcannon House, farm house, 1842–1853, Regional interest, registry number 15702007, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WX&regno=15702007. Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, extant 1853, on an L-shaped plan with single-bay (north) or two-bay (south) two-storey side elevations. Occupied, 1911. Hipped slate roof on an L-shaped plan with clay ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having concrete capping supporting terracotta pots, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Rendered, ruled and lined walls. Hipped segmental-headed central door opening approached by two cut-granite steps, timber mullions on cut-granite step threshold supporting timber transom, and concealed dressings framing timber panelled door having sidelights below fanlight. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Set in landscaped grounds.
