Described in gothic lettering as a monastery in ruins on the 1839 and 1940 eds of the OS 6-inch map and situated at the bottom of a S-N valley, with the stream known as the Maudlin River c. 70m to the E. John O'Donovan writing c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 341) records the existence of a wall of what he calls a ‘monastery' here. This may have been a leper hospital of the 13th century since the townland name is derived from Mary Magdalene, a name that was applied to leper hospitals, and it was known locally as St. Magdalen's (OSFM). However, the leper hospital of Rosse appears to have been at Durbard’s Island in the River Barrow/Nore (Lee 1966-7, 148-9) that is now Great Island (WX039-028005-). There are no visible remains of a structure at ground level in a lorry park. Two-arch road bridge over stream, dated 1847. Part creeper- or ivy-covered coursed rubble stone walls centred on limestone ashlar triangular cutwaters to pier with lichen-spotted cut-limestone stringcourses supporting parapets having rubble stone soldier course coping. Pair of round arches between cut-limestone date stone ("1847") with lichen-spotted drag edged tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning stream with unkempt banks to stream.
- Granary, 1700–1840, Regional interest, registry number 15606003, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WX&regno=15606003. Detached nine-bay three-storey grain store or warehouse, extant 1840, on a rectangular plan originally four- or five-bay three-storey. Now disused. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, lichen-spotted coping to gables, and no rainwater goods surviving on slate flagged eaves. Part creeper- or ivy-covered coursed rubble stone battered walls with benchmark-inscribed rough hewn granite flush quoins to corners; lime rendered surface finish to side (east) elevation. Square-headed central carriageway in elliptical- or segmental-headed recess with timber beam lintel framing timber boarded double doors. Square-headed window openings in camber-headed recesses with red brick block-and-start surrounds framing timber casement windows. Set back from line of road with verge to front.
