It is described in gothic script as Tobernacally in gothic script on the 1839 and 1940 eds of the OS 6-inch map. The name - Tobar na Caillí- means the nun's well (pers. comm. C. Ó Crualaoich). The well is situated in a little rock-cut S-N valley and c. 35m S of the E-W River Barrow. It is a rectangular well (dims 0.73m x. 0.95m; H 0.92m) with a brick surround and a stone lintel, open to the E. The name is recorded by John O’Donovan writing c. 1840 (O’Flanagan, 1933, vol. 2, 341). The source of a small stream is c. 5m to the S but there is no evidence of veneration at the well. Located on the flood-plain of the E-W River Barrow c. 1.15km E of its confluence with the River Nore. This is a circular area (diam. 20m) defined by a wet flat bottomed fosse (Wth 3.7 6.5m; D 0.5 1m). A leat from fosse at N leads to river which is c. 50m distant. It is planted with deciduous trees, and covered in dense scrub. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). Replacement pitched slate roof on a T-shaped plan behind parapet abutting zinc-covered flat roofs (south), clay ridge tiles, lichen-covered cut-granite coping to gables with cement rendered chimney stacks to apexes having "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" cornice capping supporting ribbed yellow terracotta pots, and concealed rainwater goods retaining cast-iron octagonal or ogee hoppers and downpipes. Roughcast walls bellcast over rendered plinth with cut-granite "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" cornice below granite ashlar parapet; replacement cement rendered, ruled and lined surface finish to rear (south) elevation. Round-headed central door opening approached by "perron" of cut-granite steps between wrought iron railings with cut-granite block-and-start surround centred on keystone framing glazed timber panelled door having overlight. Hipped slate roof on a U-shaped plan with pressed or rolled lead ridges, paired rendered central chimney stacks on axis with ridge having corbelled stepped capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta octagonal pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on slightly overhanging eaves having timber consoles retaining cast-iron octagonal or ogee hoppers and downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined wall to front (north) elevation on cut-granite chamfered cushion course on rendered base; slate hung surface finish (remainder) on cut-granite chamfered cushion course on lime rendered base.
