Located on a sea promontory (dims. 170m ENE-WSW; 14m N-S at E to 59m N-S at W) covered in rough grass that slopes down to the N and E. The promontory is defended at W by an earthen bank (L 53m; Wth 4m; int. H 1.7m; ext. H 1.4m) with an outer fosse (Wth of base 3-4m) and an outer bank (L 91m; Wth 10-12m; ext. H 1.6m; H over the fosse 4m). There is an entrance through the outer bank (Wth 4.5m) and the inner bank (Wth 3m) with a causeway (Wth 3m) over the fosse. A raised rectangular feature (dims. 6.4m x 4.7m; H 0.3m) in the interior may be a hut site (Westropp 1906, 257 8). O’Conor (2003, 22-4) identifies the remains of two small ditches at the S end beyond the line of the defensive earthworks. They appear to be cut by the massive earthworks, which suggests to him that the large visible works are secondary and might have been re-fortified by Raymond le Gros in 1170 prior to an attack by the Ostmen of Waterford and their Irish allies (ibid. 24-5). The promontory fort is attached to a broader promontory (dims c. 400m ENE-WSW; c. 200m NNW-SSW) that is defended on the N (landward) side by the linear earthwork (WX050 015002-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 12 February 2012 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 192/1952). - WX050-015002: Linear earthwork, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX050-015002-. Baginbun Head is a broad promontory (dims. c 400m ENE-WSW; c. 200m NNW-SSE; H c. 20m) with other promontories off it. Raymond le Gros encamped from May to August 1170 at a place called Dundunnolf, which was perhaps the name of the promontory fort (WX050-015001-) at the E end of the headland, and Orpen (1898) identified this as being at Baginbun Head. Raymond would then have erected the fortifications which run ENE-WSW across the headland enclosing c. 22 acres (c. 9 ha) in preparation for a large invading force. While waiting for the arrival of Strongbow he defeated a large force sent against him here from Waterford (Redmond 1900, 32-50; Orpen 1904, 430-1; 1904a), but O’Conor (2003, 24-5) suggests that this conflict occurred around the re-fortified promontory fort (WX050-015001-). The fortification consists of an overgrown earthen bank (L c. 240m; Wth 5m; int. H 1.6m; ext. H 2.2m) with a berm or slight fosse (Wth 5m) separating it from an outer, scrub-covered bank (Wth 6m; ext. H 2.2m; int. H 2.7m). The entrances at the E and W ends are probably modern and would certainly have been widened. The promontory fort (WX050-015001-) is attached to the E end of the headland and is within the area enclosed by the linear earthworks. A feature described as ‘Strongbow’s Cap’ (WX050-015003-) is within the headland, but a stone known as the 'Baginbun stone' (WX050-015004-) was found on a cliff-top c. 340m N of the linear earthworks (Orpen 1904, 261-70). It is now removed to a nearby house (WX050-018----). Archaeological testing (E004144) by Martin Byrne in 2010 immediately N of the W end of the earthwork produced no related material (See: excavations.ie 2011: 629). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Baginbun Head is a broad promontory (dims. c 400m ENE-WSW; c. 200m NNW-SSE; H c. 20m) with other promontories off it. Richard de Clare FitzGilber, also known as Strongbow, sent Raymond le Gros to Ireland with ten knights and seventy archers to prepare for his own arrival. Raymond encamped from May to August 1170 at a place called Dundunnolf (Dún Domhnail), which was perhaps the name of the promontory fort (WX050-015001-) at the E end of the headland, and Orpen (1898) identified this as being at Baginbun Head. Raymond could then have erected the linear fortifications (WX050-015001-) which run ENE-WSW across the headland enclosing about 22 acres (c. 9 ha) in preparation for a large invading force. While waiting for Strongbow Raymond defeated a large force sent against him here from Waterford (Redmond 1900, 32-50; Orpen 1904, 430-1; 1904a) and afterwards 70 leading citizens of Waterford were held captive at the camp for a time before being thrown into the sea. The linear fortification of two earthen banks encloses a large area and would have been a suitable camp for an invading force, but it was not used for this purpose. When Strongbow did arrive he had 200 knights and 1000 others with him and he landed at Crook in the estuary, from where he marched to Waterford and captured the city. A feature described in gothic lettering as ‘Strongbow’s Cap’ on the 1839 edition of the OS 6-inch map is within the headland, but this is probably an error for ‘Strongbow’s Camp’. A stone known as the 'Baginbun stone' (WX050-015004-) was found on a cliff-top c. 340m N of the linear earthworks (Orpen 1904, 261-70). It is now removed to a nearby house (WX050-018----). Archaeological testing (E004144) by Martin Byrne in 2010 immediately N of the W end of the linear earthworks produced no related material (excavations.ie 2011: 629). A stone came to light on a cliff-top at Lady Betty’s Pool. c. 1880, which is c. 340m N of the linear earthwork at Baginbun (WX050-015002-). It had an inscription that resembled those on a stone at Fethard Castle (WX050-011009-) c. 1.8km to the NNW and on a cross at Carew, in Pembrokeshire in Wales. Many interpretations of the inscription were attempted but it was generally accepted that it was Latin and recorded the name ‘Margit’ (Vigors 1897). Doubt was cast on the antiquity of the stone (Lynn 1904; 1905), but while Orpen (1904; 1905) regards the Fethard inscription as a 19th century copy of the Welsh stone he was inclined to accept the Baginbun stone as more ancient. Both stones are probably 19th century copies of the Welsh stone. The Baginbun stone is a sub-triangular stone (dims 1.58m x 1.08m; T 0.68m) that was moved c. 1980 for its own safety from its cliff-top position to a nearby house (WX050-018----). The promontory fort (WX050-015001-) is located on a sea promontory at the E side of Baginbun Head. A raised rectangular feature (dims. 6.4m x 4.7m; H 0.3m) in the interior that is described as Strongbow’s Tent in gothic lettering on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map may be a hut site (Westropp 1906, 257-8). Situated on an area of level terrain that rises gently to the NW and to the WSW, c. 275m WSW of the tip of Baginbun Point, c. 2.1kms SSE of the town of Fethard, and c. 52m NNW of the coastline at its closest point (OD c. 27m). The local area consists of a mixture of arable and pastureland defined by linear field boundaries with some rough ground located c. 80m to the N adjacent to the coastline, and with low rocky sea cliffs at the coastline adjacent to the S, and to the W and E of site. The site has unobstructed views in all directions. The adjacent signal stations were located at Hook Head Lighthouse (WX054-010001-), located c. 8.87kms to the SW\SSW, where the signal station was accommodated at the existing lighthouse (WX054-010----), which is visible in good weather, and at Crossfarnoge (WX051-011----), located c. 16.275kms to the E and just to the SW of the village of Kilmore Quay, now demolished. The site of this signal station at Baginbun Point is located adjacent (c. 275m) to the WSW of a coastal promontory fort (WX050-015001-) located at the tip of Baginbun Point, c. 240m ESE\SE of impressive linear earthworks (WX050-015002-) erected by the Anglo-Norman in 1170, and c. 2.25kms SSW of St. Mogue’s Church (WX050-011001-) located in the town of Fethard. The signal station at Baginbun was located at Baginbun Martello tower (WX050-027----), which was under construction in 1805 (Kerrigan 1995, 276). The signal crew were accommodated within the tower complex, and the signal mast, erected by 1805, was likely the only thing specifically constructed for the signal station (Kerrigan 1995, 161, 276). The NIAH entry (Reg. No. 15705009) describes the Martello tower as a ‘freestanding single-bay two-stage Martello tower.’ Two single-storey, flat-roof additions have been built against the exterior wall of the tower, one on the E, the other on the W. These additions are not shown on any of the first three editions of the Ordnance Survey maps, surveyed 1839-40, 1902-5 and 1921 respectively. The additions must therefore have been constructed after 1921, possibly after 1947 when the Martello Tower was sold to a private owner and converted into a residence (Clements 2013, 76). The Martello tower is located to the centre of the SSE end of a sub-rectangular-plan enclosure (ext. dims c. 130m WSW-ENE x c. 110ms NNW-SSE), defined by an earthen bank and ditch that is open to the coastal end to the SSE. The signal station was part of a system of over 80 signal stations constructed by the British Board of Ordnance in the first decade of the nineteenth century to warn of the approach of a French invasion fleet. Signalling between sites was accomplished using a naval signal post. The system formed a continuous chain from Malin Head in Donegal to Dublin Bay. It was abandoned by the mid-1810s when the treat of a French invasion diminished (Kerrigan 1995, 157-66).
