Situated on a gentle S-facing slope. This is a quartz bearing stone with a pointed top and a diamond shaped cross section (dims. 0.5m x 0.45m; H 1.75m), oriented NE SW. It is damaged on the SW side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 7 August, 2012 - WX029-039: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX029-039----. Located towards the bottom of a S-facing slope of Lacken Hill and just above the broad col between Lacken and a lower spur c. 1 km to the S. Six shallow pits (diam. c. 0.5-1m; D c. 0.1m), some with sherds of Neolithic pottery, and a linear feature (Wth 0.4m; D 0.4m) were identified in centre-line testing (E4067) for the N25 New Ross by-pass during 2009 (Doyle et al. 2010, 38-9). It was set aside for resolution as Ryleen 1 when further excavation (E4115) identified seven pits (dims c. 0.5m to 1.63 x 1.15m; D 0.1-0.35m) which are interpreted as tree bole-holes, but five sherds of prehistoric pottery and a piece of struck flint were recovered from them. (Clark and Long 2010d, 8-10; Hession 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 September, 2013 - WX029-040: House - Neolithic, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX029-040----. Located towards the outer edge of a shelf on a SW-facing slope of Lacken Hill. A rectangular Neolithic house (ext. dims 8.5m NW-SE; 6.25m NE-SW; int. dims. 6.75m NW-SE; 5.2m NE-SW) defined by fragments of slot-trenches, together with six pits and a segment of a ditch (Wth 2m; D 0.4m) were identified in centre-line testing (E4067) for the N25 New Ross by-pass during 2009. Three of the pits (diam. 0.4-1.2m; max. D 0.2m) were within the house (Doyle et al. 2010, 39-40). It was set aside for resolution as Ryleen 2 when full excavation (E4116) recorded the Neolithic house defined partly by post and wattle construction and partly by plank walls. It had a NE-SW internal division defined by slot-trenches that had a central opening (Wth 1.4m) between two post-holes that also supported the roof, but an entrance from the outside was not identified. There was no evidence of an internal hearth, although the structure was burnt down. Twelve pits (dims 0.08m; D 0.09m to 1.4m x 0.55m; D 0.25m) were in the vicinity of the house, largely to the SE and S (Hession 2010, 9-25). Other features, largely isolated pits, were found c. 20-60m to the W (ibid. 25-32). (Hession 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 September, 2013 - WX029-041: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX029-041----. Located towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope of Lacken Hill, and on the N bank of a small E-W stream, with a larger S-N stream c. 100m to the W. An irregularly-shaped area of broken and burnt stone in a black matrix (dims 18m E-W; 13m N-S; D 0.3m) was identified in centre-line testing (E4067) for the N25 New Ross by-pass during 2009 and set aside for resolution as Ryleen 3 (Doyle et al. 2010, 40-1). When excavated (E4119) a rectangular trough (dims 3.1m ENE-WSW; 2m NNW-SSE; D 0.4m) with a flat base and a group of five stake-holes in the NE corner was recorded. Just to the W a shallow pit or natural hollow (dims 5.8m WNW-ESE; 1.8m NNE-SSW; D 0.3m) with a collection of urburnt stone was truncated at the W by a pit (dims 1.7m x 1.5m; D 0.55m), and another large pit (dims 3.4m NE-SW; 0.83m NW-SE: max. D 0.4m) was SE of the trough (Clark and Hackett 2010g, 8-10). A second phase of activity that is probably prehistoric is represented by four intercutting pits (dims 0.68m x 0.46m; D 0.27m to 2.7m E-W; 1.92m N-S; D 0.54m) that cut through the burnt stone spread (ibid. 10-11). The pit (WX030-100----) is c. 70m to the NE.
