Situated on the S side of the harbour at Slade, which is on the E side of the low-lying and narrow part (L c. 4.5km NE-SW; Wth c. 600m-1.5km NW-SE) of the Hook peninsula. References to the Laffans of Slade date from 1541 but this Irish family was in the county from at least 1376 when Thomas Laffan of Ross, an Irishman, was granted the benefit of English law, in confirmation of an earlier mandate to William Naffan in 1279 (Hore 1900-11, vol. 4, 419-20). At the Suppression of the Knights Hospitallers’ manor of Kilcloggan (WX049-004----) in 1541 Nicholas Laffan held 120 acres in Hooke parish from them (White 1943, 101). Nicholas died in 1567, and in 1581 Joan Laffan, probably Nicholas’ widow, is renting 180 acres in the Hall from Alexander Redmond, who may have been her brother. In 1631 Nicholas Laffan held 180 acres in Slade, 10 in Portersgate and 10 in Galgestown, which were held by Henry Laffan in 1638 when he died. Henry’s son, Thomas, an infant, inherited (Hore 1900-11, vol. 4, 421-2) but Robert Redmond, possibly Thomas’ uncle and guardian, is listed as the proprietor of the land and ‘an old castle’ at Slade in 1640. Redmond was dispossessed, while the only Laffan mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) is Michael, who had 27 acres in Galgeystown in 1640 (Simington 1953, 171-2). However, Thomas Laffan of Slada was awarded 60 acres in Connaught under the transplantation in 1657 (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 506). In 1666 157 acres at Slade were confirmed to Nicholas Loftus (ibid. vol. 4, 425). In 1684 Henry Loftus built the old quay (WX054-017----) at Slade, and the following year he rented the castle and land of Slade to William Mansel, who developed the saltworks (WX054-012----). The two castles, with additional structures, continued to be occupied in several units into the 20th century (Colfer 2004, figs 6, 9). The tower house and fortified house (WX054-008002-) were built separately with only the adjacent corners touching. They were built in the 15th century, probably by the Laffans if they were in Slade then, and the house was probably modelled on the Hall (WX054-002----) of the Redmonds’, the landlord. The tower house is of five floors, with vaults over the second and the fourth floors. There is a lintelled half storey on top of the higher vault, and the tower survives complete to the stepped battlements with good quoins and battered walls (ext. dims 5.45m N-S; 5.3m E-W; total H I5.7m). A round-headed doorway of undressed stone towards the W end of the S wall is protected by machicolation outside and a murder-hole inside. A small lobby leads through a lintelled doorway to the ground floor which has a blocked light on the N wall and corbels in the N and S walls to support the ceiling. A mural stairs in the S wall gives access through a passage in the E wall and a round-headed doorway to the first floor under the E-W barrel-vault with wicker-centring. There is one slit window in the W wall and a blocked embrasure in the N wall. A newel stairs at the SE angle rises to the second floor over the vault, which is entered by a lintelled doorway from a small lobby in the E wall that connects with the stairs. This floor has rectangular windows with seats in the N and S wall, the latter embrasure controlling the murder-hole, while the former was broken out into a crude doorway communicating with the first floor of the fortified house, which is just to the NE. This floor of the tower house has a fireplace in the W wall and a garderobe chamber towards the N end of the E wall. Corbels in the N and S walls support the ceiling, and there is a spy-hole to the stairs at the floor level. The newel stairs continue to the third floor, its housing curving into the floor space of the second and third floors at the SE angle. A lintelled doorway leads from the stairs through a small lobby in the E wall and a second lintelled doorway to the third floor, which has rectangular windows with seats in the W and N walls and cupboards at the NE and SW angles. There are rebates on all the walls except the E and a single corbel in the curved housing of the stairs to support the ceiling. The newel stairs continue to the fourth floor under the E-W vault, which is entered through a small lobby in the E wall with lintelled doorways to the stairs and the chamber. This floor has a single window in the W wall. The newel stairs continues at the SE angle to the parapet where a small passage leads to the open area over the N part of the tower. A lintelled doorway leads to a small lintelled chamber over the S part of the tower, which commands the machicolation and has a single light on the S and W walls. A chimney stack rises against the W parapet, and projecting steps curve around it as they mount southwards to the lookout platform over the S part of the tower. The stepped crenellations are complete. The tower house together with the fortified house is a National Monument (Harbison 1970, 249). Archaeological testing (16E0598) by C. McLoughlin c. 50m to the S at the closest point produced only evidence of post-medieval activity (excavations.ie 2016:694). This is a National Monument in state guardianship: No. 429. Situated on the S side of the harbour at Slade, on the E side of the low-lying and narrow part (L c. Redmond was dispossessed during the Commonwealth, while the only Laffan mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) is Michael, who had 27 acres in Galgeystown in 1640 (Simington 1953, 171-2). The tower house (WX054-008001-) and fortified house were built separately with only the adjacent corners touching. They were built in the 15th century, probably by the Laffans if they were in Slade then, and the house was probably modelled on the Hall (WX054-002----) of the Redmonds’, their landlord. The house is a two-storey structure with a mezzanine at the E end and a barrel vault over the ground floor. It survives complete with stepped crenellations and is situated just NE of the tower house. A small structure was added in the angle between the two to allow communication between the first floor of the fortified house and the second floor of the tower house. A small structure was added to the E end of the fortified house to facilitate an outside stairs providing direct access to the first floor. These two structures were probably associated with the later saltworks (WX054-012----). The house is an oblong structure (ext. dims 13m E-W; 7m N-S) entered through a round-headed doorway of undressed stone towards the W end of the S wall. The lobby, protected by an inner murder-hole, leads to the vaulted ground floor, which is divided into three chambers by secondary walls. There is a large fireplace at the W end, the flue of which protrudes on the outer face of the W wall. There is also an oubliette or hidden chamber in the vault of the E chamber at S. From the lobby a stairs rises eastwards in the S wall, giving access to the central of three original chambers at the first floor. This central chamber has a large fireplace on its E wall and two lights on the N wall, one ogee-headed. The room to the W has four windows with seats, two with double-light ogee-headed windows and some with hinge-stones for shutters surviving. In the E chamber a garderobe at the NE angle was destroyed when a secondary doorway to the outside stairs was inserted and this chamber has a two-light blocked window in the E wall. The mural stairs continue eastwards in the S wall to the mezzanine over the E chamber of the first floor, with a garderobe chamber at the NE angle. Access to the wall-walk and the stepped crenellations must have been from this room, but is not evident. After the house was built, and probably associated with the saltworks in the 18th century, an attempt was made to link it to tower house (WX054-008001-) by constructing a two storey structure in the NW-facing angle between them. There is no external access to this at the corbelled ground level, but a doorway from the lobby of the house is broken through to it. At the first floor the W chamber of house has a doorway broken through to the corbelled first floor of the additional structure, which is provided with a rudimentary link to the second floor of the tower house through the broken out embrasure in the N wall of the tower house. The house, together with the tower house is a National monument. (Leask 1951; Harbison. 1975, 249) This is a National Monument in state guardianship: No. 429. Located on the S side of Slade Harbour and SE of the fortified house (WX054-008002-). In 1685 Henry Loftus rented the castles and land of Slade to William Mansel, who was a brother-in-law of his wife’s and who had been implicated in the Monmouth rebellion in England against James II in 1685. Mansel developed the saltworks, which functioned by dissolving rock-salt, and evaporating the brine into a purer commodity to be used in the fishing industry. Rock-salt from Cheshire was imported using the pier (WX054-017----) built by Henry Loftus in 1684. Coal for both the saltworks and the lighthouse (WX054-010----) was also imported at Slade, The saltworks may have been in decline by the 1770s (Hore 1900-11, vol. 4, 425-6), and the works are described as 'disused' on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Much of the E end of the structure was destroyed in the later 19th century (ibid. vol. 4, 419-20). The E end of the complex originally consisted of four E-W corridors, arranged four-square. Each corridor was divided into four chambers (int. dims c. 5m E-W; c. 3.5m N-S), and each chamber is corbelled separately. Only the SW corridor survives complete (int. dims 20m E-W; 3.5m N-S) but fragments of corbelling or piers from the NW and SE corridors are present. The contiguous W end of the complex consists of the remains of small corbelled chambers centred on a large square corbelled chamber (dims 7m x 7m), which was open at the top. The total length of the complex is c. 60m E-W. The corridors were probably used for storage while the evaporation might have been conducted in the open-roofed chamber. Located on the E side of the low-lying and narrow part (L c. 4.5km NE-SW; Wth c. 600m-1.5km NW-SE) of Hook peninsula. Nicholas Loftus was confirmed in possession of 157 acres at Slade in 1666 (Hore 1900-11, vol. 4, 425-6), and in 1684 Henry Loftus built a quay for fishing boats here, according to Robert Leigh writing in 1684 (Hore 1858-9, 459-60). In 1685 Henry leased Slade to Henry Mansel, who was a brother-in-law of his wife’s, and who had been implicated in the Monmouth rebellion in England against James II in 1685. Mansel developed the saltworks (WX054-012----) and used the pier to import rock salt and coal. In 1746 the pier is described as in need of repair, but whether or not it got it, what became known as the ‘old quay’ was probably the only pier at Slade until the E pier was built as a famine relief scheme in 1847 (Colfer 2004, 150-56). The facing of the quay on the S side of the harbour in front of the castles and the saltworks was probably provided at the same time as it is of similar character to the stonework on the E pier. The N pier (L c. 60m WNW-ESE; Wth c. 4-5m) is of two construction phases. The W end of the pier is cut from the limestone bedrock (L c. 18m) and expands in width on the W, landward, side (Wth c. 10m). The limestone blocks (L c. 1.2m; H c. 0.3m) that were quarried away on the landward side were used to build the pier and a shelter wall (Wth c. 1m) on the pier’s N side. At a later period smaller stones (dims c. 0.5m x c. 0.2m) were used to raise the surface of pier and provide a new sheltering wall on the N side (H c. 2m) built on the base of the older wall. Three corbels and the stump of a fourth projecting on the N side of the pier belong to the second construction phase. Although the pier is depicted on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as about half (L c. 30m) the length of the surviving pier there is no vertical break in the stonework that would suggest that the pier was lengthened in the later 19th century. The stonework of the slipway in front of the castles on the S side of the harbour was repaired under archaeological supervision (20E0519) when its structure was studied but no further features were noted or artefacts recovered (McLoughlin 2021) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 31 March, 2014 Amended: 9 November 2022 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) - Quay/wharf, 1845–1850, Regional interest, registry number 15705410, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WX®no=15705410.
