Marked on the 1839 and 1925 eds of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as Toberball in gothic script. The name may derive from balbh – dumb, but is probably a corruption of Toberdhall – Blind Well. It is situated at the E edge of a wide N-S valley, but is not visible at ground level. It is not known if it was ever venerated. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 15 August, 2012 - WX030-052: Historic town, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX030-052----. Old Ross was one of the principal manors of Strongbow’s descendants in Co. Wexford. In the partition of the Leinster estate in 1247 it passed to Maud, the wife of Hugh Bigod, earl of Norfolk, and thereafter to various English families. Accounts surviving from the 1280s and 1290s reveal that it was a considerable settlement with perhaps 60 households. A description in 1305 mentions two old halls, a chapel, kitchen, grange, and gardens. The location is not known precisely, but on the pattern of English rural settlements it probably lay between the motte and bailey (WX030-052001-) and the church site (WX030-053001-). There was also a stone castle (WX030-052002-) from at least the 16th century. Robert Leigh describes the settlement as an old castle out of repair and 50 cabins in the 1680s (Hore, H.F. 1858-9, 453-4). (Hore 1900-11, vol. 1, 9-39; Bradley and King 1990, 134-6) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 15 August, 2012 - WX030-052001: Castle - motte and bailey, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX030-052001-. Situated just off the E edge of a plateau and on the W side of a small N-S valley with a stream c. 20m to the E. The castle of Old Ross is first mentioned in 1233 (Hore 1900-11, vol. 1, 2) and repairs to the palisade were carried out in 1281 (ibid. 15). The motte is a flat topped earthen mound (diam. of top 8-9m; diam. of base 35m E-W; H 5.8m at W to 7.7m at E) with some mature deciduous trees and scrub. It has no clearly visible fosse, but soil removal and slippage in the 1970s showed construction layers within the core of the mound (Culleton and Colfer 1974-5). A bailey may have existed to the S (dims. c. 50m N-S; c. 30m E-W) and an enclosure (diam. c. 30m) described as the ‘Site of Castle’ is marked on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map in this location. The church site (WX030-053001-) is c. 450m to the SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 16 August, 2012 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 2/1974). - WX030-052002: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX030-052002-. The original castle at Old Ross is the motte (WX030-052001-) but by the 16th century a stone castle had been built (Hore 1900-11, vol. 1, 40-1), and according to the Civil Survey (1654-6) the castle and 1000 acres at Old Ross were the inheritance of William Plunkett of Dublin in 1640 (Simington 1953, 207). Robert Leigh writing in 1684 describes the castle as out of repair (Hore 1858-9, 453-4). The site of the castle is placed just S of the motte (WX030-052001-) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and it is presumably from here that the two gargoyles that are now on the premises of the Royal Society of Antiquaries in Merrion Square, Dublin, were recovered (Hore 1900-11, vol. 1,1, n2).
