- WX030-011: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX030-011----. Marked as a circular embanked enclosure bisected by a NE-SW townland boundary on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and located on a broad plateau. Only the N part survives in Coolnacon townland as a slightly raised, D-shaped scrub-covered area (diam. c. 30m NE-SW; c. 15m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (at NNE: Wth 3m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 2m) and external fosse (at NNE: Wth of top 3.7m; Wth of base 2.5m; D 0.8m), partly re-cut. There is no visible entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). Located on a S-facing slope. This is an oval grass-covered area with some trees (dims. 37m NW SE: 29m NE SW) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 2.5 4m; int. H 0.2 0.5m; ext. H 0.8 1.5m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 4-4.8m; Wth of base 1.6-1.8m; ext. D 0.8-1.3m) from a complete outer bank (Wth 3.6-4.5m; ext. H 0.4m at NE to 0.8 1.4m normally) that has an outer fosse (Wth of top 3-5.7m; Wth of base 1.3 1.8m; ext. D 1.1m at SE) SE S and at NW (max. ext. dims. 53m NW SE; 45m NE SW). There is no visible entrance and the site is surrounded by a field bank S-NW 2m from the outer bank. Archaeological testing (17E0304) immediately to the NE produced no related material (McLoughlin 2017; excavations.ie 2017:404) The abpve description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). Marked on the 1839 and 1925 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and described in italic lettering as Teberwonaghan on both. According to UaDubhgaill (1925, 97-8) this is properly Toberonoghan or Tobar Onchon. Onchu was an early saint renowned for collecting relics who is associated with Clonmore, Co. Carlow (CW009-027----) (Ó Riain 2011, 522). This well is located towards the bottom of a S-facing slope with a W-E stream c. 60m to the S. It is not visible at ground level in a cereal crop and it is now filled in, but it is described locally as a natural spring with no associations. - WX030-090: Cist, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWX030-090----. Situated on a low W-E spur. A cist was discovered in building a house during 2006 and excavated (E001190) by the National Museum of Ireland. The cist (dims. c. 0.9m x 0.7m; D 0.4m) had a paved floor and was covered by a single lintel (dims. c. 1.52m x 1.2m; T 0.1m). The cist had been bisected by a building trench and only 5 side-slabs remained in place, but these leaned in from the bottom. The cist had been placed in a pit (dims. 2.1m x 1.3m; D 0,.7m) that was partly dug into the shale bedrock. The cremation deposit had been largely removed by the building work, but must have filled the cist as the cremated remains of 17 individuals were recorded from what remained. These included 12 adults, at least one adolescent, two juveniles and at least two infants. A sample of bone produced a C14 date of 2134-1947 Cal. BC. No pottery was recorded, but a tiny clay bead and a perforated shale piece (dims. c. 5cm x c. 5m) were recovered. (Sikora and Reilly 2011) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 16 August, 2012
