Marked as a circular wooded enclosure on the 1839 (diam. c. 55m) and the 1924 (diam. c. 45m) eds of the OS 6-inch map, and located on a W-E spur with the SW-NE Boro River c. 300m to the S and Wilton Castle on the other side of the river c. 500m to the E. This is a circular wooded area (diam. 46m N-S) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 3-4.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.8-1.1m) with an external fosse (Wth of top 3.5-4.5m; D 0.5m). There is no visible entrance, and it is probably a landscape feature. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In 1247 William de Denne held the barony of Kayer by the service of three knights (Colfer 2002, 104), but in 1376 the castle of Keyer, also called Cloghnakayer, was granted to Stephen Furlong. The fief passed to the Butlers at some time in the 16th century (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 560-1) and in 1641 an estate of 2800 acres in Clonmore parish, including the castle at Keyer, was the property of Pierce Butler (Simington 1953, 222). The Butler land was in Keyer (Wilton), Clonmore, Edermine, and Ballilane (Ballyelland?). William Alcock acquired the lands in 1695 from Capt. Robert Thornhill who had been granted the forfeited Butler lands. Alcock built a house which was replaced by the present Gothic mansion in 1840 to a design of Daniel Robertson of Kilkenny. This house was burnt in 1923 but the ruin still survives (Bence-Jones 1988, 285). (Jeffrey 1979, 205 6) The location of the castle of Keyer is not certainly known, but the present Wilton Castle is situated on a platform overlooking the SW-NE Boro River at a point where it turns N, with the stream immediately to the W. There is no evidence of an older structure in the ruin. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). Part creeper- or ivy-covered walls centred on triangular cutwaters to piers having moss-covered pyramidal capping with rubble stone soldier course coping to parapets. Series of five segmental arches with part creeper- or ivy-covered voussoirs. Sited spanning Boro River with unkempt banks to river.

Detached three-bay three-storey over basement country house, built 1838-44, on an asymmetrical plan with single-bay three-storey advanced end bays; six-bay two-storey Garden Front (south). Occupied, 1911. Burnt, 1923. Now in ruins. Set in unkempt grounds.

Part creeper- or ivy-covered fine roughcast walls over coursed or snecked rubble stone construction. Square-headed door openings with cut-granite thresholds, and cut-granite surrounds centred on fluted keystones framing timber boarded doors. Square-headed flanking window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed red brick block-and-start surrounds framing timber pivot fittings having square glazing bars. Square-headed openings (half-attic) with cut-granite sills, and concealed red brick block-and-start surrounds framing louvered timber fittings; (east): Attached three-bay single-storey coach house with half-attic on a rectangular plan. Now disused. Pitched and hipped slate roof with clay or terracotta ridge tiles, and no rainwater goods surviving on slate flagged eaves. Fine roughcast walls over coursed or snecked rubble stone construction. Series of three segmental-headed carriageways with concealed red brick block-and-start surrounds having stepped reveals framing double doors having overpanels. Square-headed window openings (half-attic) with cut-granite sills, and concealed red brick block-and-start surrounds framing timber fittings having square glazing bars. Set in grounds shared with Wilton Castle with piers to perimeter having cut-granite capping supporting wrought iron double gates.

Roughcast walls bellcast over rendered plinth. Square-headed door opening, reclaimed cut-granite doorcase with fluted pilasters supporting dentilated segmental pediment on "triglyph"-detailed frieze on entablature framing replacement timber panelled door. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement timber casement windows replacing eight-over-eight (ground floor) or twenty-over-fifteen (first floor) timber sash windows without horns. Set in grounds shared with Wilton Castle.
