On a steep sided natural sand knoll 20m high on the N and 10m on the S side. The summit of the knoll, which is c. 100m in diameter is flat and c. 20m wide. The N and W quadrants of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) are marked on the 1st ed. 6-inch OS map on the summit. As indicated on the OS map, the S portion of the monument appears to have been incorporated in a field boundary which runs NE-SW along the S side. The monument is not visible at ground level. Situated on the high W end of a E-W sand ridge with steep slopes to the S, W and N. Level ground to the E indicates the possible location of a small bailey. Circular steep-sided mound (diam. 45m; H. 5-7m) with a flat summit (diam. 18m) surrounded by a berm (Wth 5m) at the S, W and N. There is a slight trace of a fosse inside the berm (Wth 3m) at the N. A narrow quarry is cut into the E side of the motte with spoil to the N. There is an opening for a window in the E gable and gaps at the W end of the N and S walls. The graveyard (WI042-003002-) contains a small number of late eighteenth-century headstones to the SW of the church. A roughly semicircular enclosure (WI042-003003-) surrounds the site but does not continue to the N of the road. The ring-ditch, one of a number within the same large field including a larger and more clearly visible ring-ditch (WI047-029----) located c. 207m to the WNW, is faintly visible on Google Earth aerial photograph of the site (July 2021). It consists of a circular feature (ext. dims c. 7.8m E-W x c. 7.7m N-S) defined by a continuous ditch (Wth <1m) that can be generally traced along the entire circuit in the above aerial photograph. No evidence for an entrance gap. Site bisected to the N third by a later field boundary (evident on the Ordnance Survey third ed. six-inch map of c. 1910) that has been subsequently removed. Sited c. 295m SE\SSE of an enclosure (WI042-001----), and c. 616m NNE of a ruinous church (WI042-003001-) and an associated graveyard (WI042-003002-), that are located within the same townland of Ardoyne close to the border with County Carlow. The ring-ditch, one of a number within the same large field including a ring-ditch (WI047-028----) located c. 91m to the W, is visible on Google Earth aerial photograph of the site (July 2021). It consists of a circular feature (ext. dims c. 11.9m N-S x c. 11.1m E-W) defined by a continuous ditch (Wth c. 1.4m) that can be generally traced along the entire circuit in the above aerial photograph but is most clearly evident along an arc running from NW to the NE. No evidence for an entrance gap. Interestingly, the ring-ditch is located neatly within a linear feature (ext. dims c. 349m E-W x c. 9.5-11.1m N-S) that runs roughly E to W across the entire Wth of the modern field, and is characterised by two roughly parallel ditches or features (Wth c. 1.5 to c. 2.1m). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Holy Trinity Church (Ardoyne), church/chapel, 1830–1835, Regional interest, registry number 16404201, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16404201. Detached three-bay single-storey Church of Ireland church, built 1833. The church is constructed in squared rubble with ashlar dressings. To the west side is a central three-stage tower with a castellated parapet and tall pinnacles; to either side is a single storey room with castellated parapet. To the east side there is a gabled chancel projection. The panelled front door has a blind fanlight and is set within a Tudor-arched opening. Window openings are pointed-arched lancets; the east window has panel tracery. The pitched roof is finished with natural slate and cast-iron rainwater goods. The church is slightly set back from a granite wall with square gate pillars and a wrought-iron gate; it is within a small graveyard.
- Ardoyne House, farm house, 1740–1760, Regional interest, registry number 16404202, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16404202. Detached five-bay two-storey farmhouse built c.1750. The east elevation is finished mainly in vertical hung slate while the remainder is finished in render. The front door is obscured by a 1990s glazed lean-to porch. The window openings are mainly flat-headed with replacement top-hung frames. The pitched roof is finished with natural slate and has uPVC rainwater goods. To the rear is a range of mid 19th-century outbuildings. The farmhouse is set within farmland.
