A portion of a steep-sided ditch (referred to as F9 in excavation reports) (L 14.6m; Wth 1.8-2.2m), interpreted as that of a ringfort, was excavated (Lynch 2005, 17). This contained burnt animal bone, charcoal, heat-shattered stones, a fragment of a quernstone and the possible base of a quernstone. A second ditch feature (L 6.65m, referred to as F4 in excavation reports)was excavated to the N and the excavator suggested that this may also be part of the ringfort ditch. The pit was subrectangular (1.1m by 0.45m by 0.1m) with three discernible fills and contained a substantial amount of charcoal, which may represent the remains of an oak plank that lay across the pit to facilitate activities that took place at the site. Alternatively, the pit could be associated with charcoal-burning activities and may be an isolated charcoal-burning pit. Burning did take place in situ as the natural clay was fire-reddened.
