National Monument in state ownership No. 203. Situated at the N end of Baltinglass Town, 100m E of the River Slaney. Only the church survives of the Cistercian abbey founded in 1148. The church has a long nave, with an imposing nave arcade, a choir and a presbytery (with a three-light window) (overall L c. 56m), with two later transepts. The W door has a two-centred granite arch doorway, probably fifteenth century in date, and a three-light window above. The E end of the church has several Romanesque carved capitals, and there is a sedilia in the presbytery. A crossing-tower was built in the later Middle Ages, and subsequently rebuilt in 1815 in the Neo-Gothic style. The 'abbots castle' (WI027-024002-) was demolished in 1882 to provide materials for the building of the rectory. (Stalley 1987, 242) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated at the N end of Baltinglass town close to Baltinglass Abbey. The 'abbot's castle' was demolished in 1882 to provide materials for the building of the rectory, which is adjacent to Baltinglass abbey (WI027-024001-). Foundations of the E end of the S wall are visible under the existing garden wall. A possible SE angle tower is indicated by the shape of the wall. It is of roughly coursed limestone, and the foundations are over 1m thick. Fitzgerald includes a print of a painting showing what appears to be a three- or four-storey tower house with windows with hood-mouldings, and a possibly later house built onto it. Situated at the N end of Baltinglass Town, 100m E of the River Slaney. The graveyard (c. 85m E-W; c. 42m N-S) of the Cistercian Abbey at Baltinglass (WI027-024001-). Fitzgerald (1906-8, 411) describes the graveyard as a ‘burial ground [that] contains no slabs or tombs of any antiquity. The earliest dated slab lies near the sedilia at the east end of the abbey: its date is 1699.' (See WI027-024006-). The font stands in the porch of St Joseph's RC Church in Baltinglass. Its original location (WI027-024005-) is uncertain, local tradition being divided between the graveyards at Kilranelagh (WI027-034002-) and Coolinarrig (WI027-027003-), the latter being both closer and within the present parish of Baltinglass. The font consists of a large, oblong, granite block (L 0.76m; Wth 0.75m; H 0.3m) containing a straight-sided, oblong basin (diam. 0.56m; D 0.2m) with a central drain-hole (diam. 0. 5m) now filled with concrete. A cross (H 0.23m; Wth 0.18m) is carved in bold relief formed by a raised band (Wth 0.04-0.05m; H 0.015m) on the font's side. A recumbent rectangular slab (L 1.83m; Wth 0.89m) on the floor of the chancel of Baltinglass Abbey (WI027-024001-), lying E-W with the head to W. The surface is very badly spalled. A framed coat-of-arms in a recess at the top appears to comprise a shield surmounted by a helmet and mantling. Noted in November 1896 (Fitzgerald 1906-8, 411) as having an inscription in small incised capitals which read: ‘Here lyeth the body of Robert Stratford Esqr who departed this life on the 26th of October 1699.’ Only a few letters are still visible. A circular granite font (overall Wth 0.81m; H 0.39m) centrally placed 0.5m inside the E wall of Baltinglass Abbey (WI027-024001-). Described in 1906-8 (Fitzgerald, 411) as in rough, unfinished-looking condition. Archaeological excavation was undertaken by Yvonne Whitty at Rathcoran House (St Joseph's Convent), Baltinglass, County Wicklow within the constraint area for Baltinglass Historic Town (WI027-024----) in December 2018 under licence No. 18E0686. The excavation results were described by Whitty (2021, 15-16) as follows; 'Two archaeological sites were identified; Area 1 and Area 2 within the greenfield area to the west of Rathcoran House. This is an area where a roadway and carparking will be located. Intensive test trenching was completed in this area to confirm the extent of the archaeology identified. The entire footprint of the roadway and parking area was stripped between both sites. All features were subsequently fully excavated by hand. Area 1 is located adjacent to Rathcoran House in Test Trench 1. A group of two postholes which appear to be joined by a slot and a cremation burial pit have been grouped together based on their proximity and the fact that all these features were sealed by large sub angular flat stones. The most northerly feature was a cremation pit C6 which measured 0.76m x 0.60m and was 0.18m in depth. The pit appeared to have been left open for some time after its excavation as the basal fill C15 was the result of natural siltation. The middle fill C14 was pyre material mixed with cremated bone. Osteological analysis indicates that the remains of an adult and possible juvenile were deposited in this pit. Analysis of a sample of charcoal recovered from the fill C14 identified alder and oak charcoal in pit fill C14 which was used as fuel for the pyre. This sample has been radiocarbon dated to the Late Bronze Age (UBA-43608, 2847+-34, 1118-916BC at two sigma calibration)'. Archaeological excavation was undertaken by Yvonne Whitty at Rathcoran House (St Joseph's Convent), Baltinglass, County Wicklow within the constraint area for Baltinglass Historic Town (WI027-024----) in December 2018 under licence No. 18E0686. The excavation results were described by Whitty (2021, 22-3) as follows; 'Archaeological Area 2 comprised a large shallow pit was located at the southeast extent of the development in Trenches 1 and 8. This isolated feature C23, comprises a large sub rectangular pit which was northeast to southwest aligned measuring 3.9m in length, 2.2m in width and was 0.40m in depth (Figure 18- Figure 20, Plate 11 and Plate 12). It contained five fills C24-C28. The primary fill C24 a black sandy silt contained slag which consisted exclusively of partial and complete smithing hearth cakes with weights of single examples ranging from 262g to 1386g (Rondolez, Appendix 7 Metalworking Report). Also contained within C23 where several fragments of clay tuyeres were recovered (18E0686:231-8). The largest piece (266g) consisted of the lower part of a vitrified tuyere front and showed that the original tuyere was truncated cone-shaped with a flat front which had a ‘slag beard’ attached to it. Other pieces represent heat-affected tuyere wall fragments. The primary fill was overlain with a redeposited natural C25, followed by smithing debris material C26 a layer of redeposited natural C27 sealed this layer and the uppermost natural siltation layer C28 accumulated after the pit was abandoned.' The metal analysis completed by Rondolez indicates that this assemblage represents the waste of secondary blacksmithing, likely the production of large iron objects or substantial quantities of smaller ones. This activity took place outside of the area of excavation and was dumped into the pit C23. The date of the assemblage is most likely of either early or late medieval in date'.
