This section of St Kevin's Road runs from the top of Wicklow Gap at its NW end to the mouth of the Glendasan valley at SE for a distance of c. 2,350m but can only be traced for about 750m towards the NW end. It consists of a generally level track (Wth 3m) with a bank (Wth 1.5m; H 0.5m) on either side and a slight external drainage ditch on the upslope (SW) side. In some areas the road consists of the gravelly mineral soil cleared of stones and boulders but many sections are uncleared and earthfast boulders have been left in situ. The SE end cannot be traced but it may have turned S to cross the Glandasan river. While St Kevin's road is only indicated on the OS 6-inch map as far N as Wicklow Gap, Price (1940) notes that it continued north-westwards to Templefinan church (WI016-009----) in Ballinagee townland. (Price 1940, 256; 1945, 28-9) According to Healy (1972, 147-8) ‘the position of St Kevin's Road is marked on the O.S. Maps, and much of it can still be seen on the ground. It starts behind the houses which face the Royal Hotel, and for the first two and half kilometres (1 miles) follows a course between the Glendasan River and the road to Wicklow Gap. In the first 100 metres part of the paved surface can be seen, but beyond this it is much overgrown, and difficult to trace. It also passes through several farms where it is still in use and-has been resurfaced. Near the upper end of Glendasan, the site of the road is buried under a spoil heap from mines operated in recent years. For a few hundred metres at the top of the valley the paving is again exposed, and shows that the road was about five metres wide, and paved with flat stones up to one metre across, carefully fitted together with smaller stones in the interstices. The extreme steepness at this point would suggest that it was not intended for vehicular traffic, but for horse and foot travellers only. At other points along this road there are large boulders protruding through the road surface which would also block the way to wheeled traffic. On Nevill's map of Co Wicklow, made in 1760, this is shown as the only road through Wicklow Gap, and was apparently still in use at that period. The present county road through Glendasan was built about 1826. Wrights guide to Wicklow (1827 edition) states that a road is being built through Wicklow-Gap, and Lewis in 1837 says that a new road has been made from Glandalough to Hollywood (Lewis 1837, 661). But north of this road and very much higher up the side of Glendasan there is an unfinished road over 6.5 kilometres long (4 miles) known as the "Madman's Road, about which very little is known. It is apparently earlier than the present county road. It starts at a point on Brockagh Mountain, directly opposite to the Royal Hotel, and approximately on the 700 ft. contour, and finishes on the side of Tonlagee Mountain, north, west of Wicklow Gap. It is about 4 metres wide, well graded, and has been provided with stone culverts where necessary. This road was apparently never used. Apart from the difficulty of getting to the beginning or to the end, there are gaps along the route, wet boggy areas where a causeway was required, but never finished. The stones used have been split by explosives, and the track of the drill can be seen on some. Wright's Wicklow map of 1822 shows a road which follows the line of the "Madmans Road" to beyond Wicklow Gap. The earliest records of lead mining in Glendasan are a report of a trial shaft at Luganure in 1800 and a plan of the same mine fourteen years Later. In 1826 The Mining Company of Ireland started operations here, they opened new mines and the output was greatly increased. It is probable that the "Madman's Road" was started soon after the opening of mines in the area, and was shown by the map makers as an existing road. The reason why it should be abandoned in 1826 would appear to be that all the shafts except one were well below the level of the "Madman's Road" and were very much better served by the present road which follows as far as possible the floor of the valley’. A number of small excavations were carried out along the road in 1968 and 1972 by the National Museum of Ireland (Excavations 1972, No. 33) and more recently by University College Dublin in 2005 (Excavation Licence 05E1261) (McDermott 2008, 415) and 2006 (Excavation Licence 06E0755) (McDermott 2009, 570). Now situated in the Visitor Centre, this cross was moved from the location shown on the OS 6-inch map (given above). It may have had an earlier location also. A granite cross (H 1.66 m; Wth of arms 0.76m) with a crucifixion figure on the E face and patterns of zoomorphic interlace on the S and N sides, set into a truncated pyramidal base (dims. 0.32m x 0.18m). The figure of Christ is wearing a short tunic and the decoration is executed in high relief. (Harbison 1992, 95) Described by Leask (1950, 44) as the 'Market Cross. This originally stood on the roadway in front of the Royal Hotel and was removed many years ago and re-erected in St. Kevin's Church. It is of granite, 5 feet 6 inches in height and 2 feet 7 inches across the arms. Ringless, it is none the less obvious that the design derives from the ringed type there being—as in that type—hollows where the arms meet the shaft and eight small rolls at the points where the four arcs of the ring would join the arms and shaft. The Crucifixion is carved in high relief on the front; the figure wearing a short, knee-length garment, the head inclined and crowned. The space around the arms and head is filled with interlacing very much weathered, and a row of large pellets descends therefrom down each side of the shaft. Below the Crucifixion is the figure in relief of a long robed ecclesiastic. On the back, W. side of the cross a stiff floral pattern occupies the head while zoomorphic interlacements ornament the back below and the sides of the shaft. There is also an animal interlace in a panel on the end of the south arm and a diaper pattern on the corresponding opposite panel. The base, in the form of a truncated pyramid with hollowed sides but flat on the back, was carved on all faces. It is greatly worn and defaced but two small figures rise in high relief on the front and there is an animal interlace on the back’. Described by Harbison (1992,96) as ‘the so-called `Market Cross' is displayed in the Interpretative Centre in Glendalough, but its original position is no longer known. The cross, including the base, is 1.66 m high, 76 cm across the arms, and the bottom of the base is 32 cm wide and 18 cm thick. The cross has no ring, but there are small rounded volutes at the extremities of the armpits. The shaft has a roll moulding. EAST FACE Base: At the centre of the base there are two figures standing together in high relief on a raised platform. They may hold books. There may be two further figures on the left, but it is no longer possible to make out the decoration on the right. The Cross: The shaft is decorated with broad pellets inside the roll moulding. Shaft: Figure of a bishop or abbot. — Standing out in high relief on the lower part of the shaft is a figure traditionally identified as St. Kevin. Both of his forearms appear to be raised, and over his alb he wears a chasuble, the front of which is visible. The head is damaged. Head: THE CRUCIFIED CHRIST. — Christ is to be understood as being nailed to the cross. He is dressed in a loincloth. His head, probably crowned, falls towards the left. His feet are placed beside one another, and his emaciated arms are stretched out at different levels. There is some interlacing above Christ's right arm, but the remainder of the decoration is badly worn. There is further interlace with tendril endings above and beside Christ's head. There is a raised vertical moulding near the end of the arms. SOUTH SIDE The decoration of the base is very worn. The shaft of the cross has interlaced animals with a narrower ribbon coiling itself around the animals. The end of the arm also has an animal interlace. WEST FACE Base: Interlace with tendril terminations below. The Cross: The shaft has slightly irregular interlace with tendril endings. Above it a section has been inserted in recent times. The head has floral motifs, on either side of which are two raised vertical mouldings. NORTH SIDE Base: Decoration unclear. The Cross: Animal interlace forming figure-of-eight mouldings. The decoration at the end of the arm is not clear. Within a single-line frame is a cross formed of an endless band which forms triquetras at the ends of the arms and—at the head and base—knots which are derived from the triquetras by the addition of an extra loop. The central expansion is circular, filled with a pattern of four simple knots on a single band. In the two upper spaces are circles containing Greek crosses, one with curved the other with angular expansions at the centre and 'extremities. The slab was described by Macalister (1949, 84) as `it has a panel of floral work in the middle flanked by two others, apparently quite plain: but that on the sinister side has the sadly abraded inscription'. The inscription on this slab was read by Macalister (1949, 84-86) as ‘[{A}{W}]{*}:ORDOMUIRCHER[TAC] HUCHATHAL[A][I][N] | CUSDOGUT{N}OD{A}R:{A}{W}:I:DOTHIGERNAUFOG[ARTAIG] which he expanded into {AW} *: OR DO MUIRCHERTACH U CHATHALAIN OCUS DO GUTNODAR, {AW} :I: DO THIGERNA U FOGARTAIG’. Described by Leask (1950, 43-4) as ‘part of a rectangular slab, 2 feet 10 inches [0.86m] wide and, now, 3 feet 9 inches [1.14m] long. A broad band of scroll foliage branching from a stem (that of a cross?) fills the centre of a panel; on each side are undecorated spaces in one of which a much worn inscription, which is now obliterated, was discerned many, years ago. It read "Or do Muirchertach U Chatala(n) ocus do gutnodar aw. i. Thigerna U Fag…". This stone was found in 1908 by a group of men hunting ferrets near Hollywood, Co. Wicklow. It was lying face down at the edge of a grassy lane at Lockstown Upper (WI016-017----). It consists of a boulder (dims. c. 1.2m by 0.9m and 0.8m thick) carved with a labyrinth design (diam. c. 0.7m). A small section of the labyrinth is missing where a section was broken from the stone: this had been done prior to its discovery. The labyrinth appears to have been carved using the classical seed pattern and it is not known which way the labyrinth was intended to be viewed though it seems probable that it may been positioned so that its opening was at the bottom. The exact purpose of this stone is unknown though it seems likely that it had some connection with the pilgrimage to Glendalough and may have been used as a marker or station along the route where pilgrims stopped to pray. The labyrinth design has been replicated as a landscape feature in front of the Visitor Centre. National Monument in state ownership No. 134. Situated on a largely natural platform on a S-facing slope overlooking the level floor of the Glendasan river some 300m E of the main monastic complex. The remains comprise Trinity church, a cross-slab and two millstone rough-outs (WI023-014003-, WI023-014004-). The church consists of a nave (dims. 9m E-W; 5.4m N-S) and chancel (dims. 4.1m E-W; 2.8m N-S) with a fine granite chancel arch. The W wall has a door with inclined jambs and lintel leading to a later annexe (dims. 3.14m E-W; 2.84m N-S), possibly a sacristy, which had a corbelled roof and a round tower or belfry (destroyed during a storm in 1818). A round-headed door was inserted towards the W end of the S wall when the annexe was built. The chancel is lit by a round-headed window in the E wall and a pointed window in the S while the nave has a single round-headed window in the S wall. Six projecting corbels can be seen on the exterior of the walls which would have supported the roof. The cross-slab is situated outside the S door and is a large trapezoidal slab (dims. 1.48m x 0.5m x 0.18m) with a small single-line incised Greek cross. Detached six-bay single-storey gable-ended Gothic style Roman Catholic church, with two-bay chancel, built in 1846-51 to designs by James Joseph McCarthy. The building has a simple rectangular nave with the chancel to the east and gabled porch to the south and a gabled vestry to the north. The walls, which are of squared granite rubble with dressed granite to the openings and a moulded granite string course, are interspersed with reducing buttresses. The pitched roof is slated and has granite parapets with a bellcote and cross finials. The original entrance is to the west gable and consists of a pointed arch timber double door set in a moulded reveal with three-quarter colonettes, however the entrance used today is set within the porch to the south and consists of a pointed arch opening with wrought-iron ‘gates’, splayed reveal and drip stone, with the decorative stops in the form of human heads. The windows are generally tall and narrow with pointed arch heads; most are filled with geometric pattern stained glass with pictorial stained glass to those to the east gable. The church is set within relatively large well tended grounds. The single-cell interior has plain plastered and painted walls, exposed roof timbers and a part tiled and part terrazzo floor. There are two groups of late 19th-century bench pews set at either side of a central aisle and to the west end there is a timber Gothic style confessional and a tall similarly styled door screen. The altar has c.1990s fittings. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Brockagh, about 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
