Situated on a ridge overlooking the marshy floor of a stream valley to N. Originally constructed c. 1214 by Henri de Londres, Archbishop of Dublin (Orpen 1908). Described in the 1838-40 Ordnance Survey Field Name Books of Derrylossary parish (SMR File) as ‘ all that is perceptible is a square mound about 40 feet [12m] high with the remains of masonry, surrounded by a deep ditch. In 1308 Piers Gaveston fortified Castlekevin having first harrassed and defeated the O’Byrnes and O’Tooles, in order to conciliate the English.’ The present remains consist of an almost square-shaped motte with a possible large bailey area on the E side. The site was extensively rebuilt to act as the centre of a campaign against the O'Tooles and at this time it was probably enlarged to its present form. Later the site was granted to the O'Tooles but was destroyed before 1636 and not subsequently repaired. The motte (max. dims. 70m N-S; 46m E-W) has a level summit (dims. 34m N-S; 31m E-W; H 6-7m above base of fosse) and steep battered sides faced with uncoursed rubble. In the centre of the E portion are the remains of the castle (WI024-003001-). The platform is surrounded by a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 6-8m; D 2-3m) and, on the N side, by a bank (Wth 7m; H 2.5m), a sunken road (WI024-003002-) and an outer bank (Wth 4.5m; H 1m). The possible bailey area consists of a subrectangular area (max. dims. 143m E-W; 67m N-S) tapering to the E. It is defined by a bank which is only visible at W end of N side elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp along the N and E sides and by a fosse (Wth 4m) on the S. The road and outer bank of the motte continue along the N edge of the possible bailey. The identification of a possible bailey area to the E is uncertain as there is no clear evidence for any enclosing element on the E and S sides. The motte is located at the W end of a short E-W ridge. The natural narrow elongated shape of this ridge that is enclosed by lower wet land to the N and E gives the appearance of a bailey area on the E side of the motte. There are the remains of a sunken road running along the base of this ridge on the N and E side of the ridge. The road follows along the base of the ridge and from N through to E where it appears to run off into marshy land to the E of the ridge. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 15 November 2012 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 110/1940). - WI024-003001: Castle - Anglo-Norman masonry castle, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI024-003001-. Situated in the centre of the E portion of a square-shaped motte (WI024-003----) located on the W end of a ridge running E-W overlooking a marshy river valley to the N. The remains consist of a projecting gate tower of uncoursed rubble and part of a corner tower surviving at the NE angle. Originally constructed c. 1214 by Henri de Londres, Archbishop of Dublin (Orpen 1908, 17-27). Described in the 1838-40 Ordnance Survey Field Name Books of Derrylossary parish (SMR File) as ‘ all that is perceptible is a square mound about 40 feet [12m] high with the remains of masonry, surrounded by a deep ditch. In 1308 Piers Gaveston fortified Castlekevin having first harrassed and defeated the O’Byrnes and O’Tooles, in order to conciliate the English.’ The fragamentary remains fo the stone castle are difficult to undertsand due to the poor condition of the upstanding remains. The monument consists of a high steep-sided square-shaped motte (WI024-003----) enclosed by a a wide flat-bottomed fosse with remains of an external bank visible on the N side only. A short stretch of the wall of a stone castle or gatehouse can be seen rising from the base of the fosse on the E side of the motte, this wall rises to the summit of the motte on the E side with the remains of a possible broken out window or doorway embrasure visible at the base of the wall. A second stretch of walling belonging to the stone castle can be seen on the NE angle of the motte. The OS 25-inch map depicts the upstanding remains of the E wall of a stone castle standing in the fosse on the E side of a square-shaped motte. On this map the E wall of the castle which is aligned N-S has a cross wall running off the centre of the W face of the E wall. These upstanding walls have been interpreted as the remains of a stone gatehouse belonging to an Anglo-Norman castle possibly of 14th century date. The arrangement of stone castle or gatehouse standing on the E side of a motte protecting the entrance to the summit of the motte is similar to the Anglo-Norman castle at Newcastle (WI019-005002-). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload/revision: 15 November 2012 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 110/1940). - WI024-003002: Road - hollow-way, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI024-003002-. Situated on a ridge overlooking the marshy floor of a stream valley to N. Originally constructed c. 1214 by Henri de Londres, Archbishop of Dublin (Orpen 1908). The present remains consist of an almost square-shaped motte with a possible bailey area on the E side. The site was extensively rebuilt to act as the centre of a campaign against the O'Tooles and at this time it was probably enlarged to its present form. Later the site was granted to the O'Tooles but was destroyed before 1636 and not subsequently repaired. The motte (WI024-003----) has a level summit and steep battered sides faced with uncoursed rubble. In the centre of the E portion are the remains of a Anglo-Norman stone castle or gatehouse (WI024-003001-). The base of the motte is enclosed by a flat-bottomed fosse and, on the N side, by an external bank. A sunken road (Wth 3.5m; L 150m) and an outer bank (Wth 4.5m; H 1m) aligned E-W can be seen running along the N side of the bailey area. This road runs up to the NE angle of the external bank and fosse of the motte and may represent the original access road into the fortification. The posible bailey of the motte consists of a subrectangular area tapering to the E. It is defined by a bank mainly reduced to a scarp along the N and E sides and by a fosse on the S. The sunken road continues along the N and E sides of the bailey. At the E side of the bailey the road appears to run off eastwards into the marshy area. On the N side of the bailey there are traces at the W end of an earthen bank defining the N side of the bailey. On the N side of the bailey the hollow way is flanked by two earthen banks. The S bank acted as the enclosing bank of the bailey on the N side which may suggest that the hollow way was constructed as an enclosing defensive fosse of the bailey on the N side rather than a roadway giving access to the motte. A stone cairn 9m across and 2m high in its current form. There are some large boulder thrown up onto the cairn, particularly on the N side. Several of these shows signs of splitting, and they are certainly dumped here as part of field clearance. Beneath these larger boulders a cairn of smaller stones can be clearly seen. Detached three-bay two-storey over basement country house, built in 1813, with full-height projection to the east dating from c.1920. The country house is constructed in rubble with dressed quoins and is lime-washed. The slated hipped roof has a pronounced overhang supported on plain brackets, and granite chimneystacks. The roof of the extension is hidden by a parapet. The high-level entrance consists of a panelled timber door with shallow hood on decorative brackets, and segmental fanlight with "spoke" tracery. The entrance is reached via a flight of stone steps enclosed by a low rendered wall and decorative balustrade. There is a side entrance (to the extension) with door and fanlight similar to the main entrance, but with a pedimented portico (possibly added c.1980s). The windows are largely flat-headed and filled with six over six and six over three timber sash frames, with ten over ten timber sash frames to the basement and some top-hung timber frames to the extension. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Extensive range of outbuildings to the rear which incorporate a folly tower. The country house is set within its own extensive well wooded grounds. - Avonmore House, country house, 1820–1840, Regional interest, registry number 16402408, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI®no=16402408. Detached seven-bay two-storey country house, built c.1830 but extended by four bays to the north side in similar style c.1955. The country house is roughly a backward "C" shape in plan with full-height outer projections to the rear. An attic storey has been created to the rear- probably also in c.1955, and to the south is a conservatory with ogee shaped roof. The walls of the original section are in rubble, whilst those of the extension are in squared rubble, with granite quoins and brick window surrounds to both sections. The attic extension is finished in unpainted roughcast. The roof is largely hipped and slated with an overhang supported on paired brackets, however the roof of the attic extension is flat. To the rear there are some roof lights and a small flat-roofed dormer; tall rendered chimneystacks. The entrance is set in an off-centre position and consists of a panelled timber door with plain sidelights, panelled pilasters with decorative brackets supporting an entablature and an elliptical fanlight with decorative tracery. Stone steps lead to the doorway. The windows are largely flat-headed and largely filled with six over six timber sash frames. There is a small Palladian window to the north elevation. Cast-iron rainwater goods. The country house is set within its own extensive grounds. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Castlekevin, about 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
