The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1928, 84-5) describe the church as measuring 16.5m long by 5.8m wide, (average H 1m) with an internal partition 5.5m from the E end, and part of a window of cut stone surviving at the E end of the S wall. The church is traditionally associated with St Ernin (Ronan 1928, 139-40), and lies towards the N end of an oval graveyard (dims. 50m NE-SW; 40m NW-SE) defined by an early 19th-century wall possibly built on the perimeter of an earlier enclosure. A roughly shaped, rectangular granite block (dims. L 0.5m; Wth 0.43m; H 0.32m high) contains a finely carved, smooth, steep-sided, almost circular basin (diams. 0.30m; 0.27m; D 0.13m.). Record no. WI025-088002- was created for the unknown 'Original location' of this font. Detached eight-bay single-storey Roman Catholic church in a simple Arts & Crafts style, built 1887 originally to serve the dual purpose of a church and a school, but now in use solely as a church. The façade is in rubble stone with brick quoins, dressings, buttresses and string courses, whilst the overhanging gable-ended pitched roof is slated and has plain bargeboards and small cross finials. To the east side of the north elevation there is a full-height gabled porch with two entrances to opposite sides each consisting of timber doors with large square fanlights. The porch is topped with a brick bellcote. To the west side of the rear elevation there is a small gable-ended vestry projection which is now rendered, with a small flat-roofed extension of c.1980 to east of this finished in dry dash. The windows are a mixture of segmental-headed, flat-headed and pointed arch and have a mixture of timber frames, mostly mullioned and transomed with swivel openers, and granite sills. Cast-iron rainwater goods.Internally, the church consists of a long nave with exposed roof trusses, walls with tongue & groove wainscoting and plain painted plaster above, with simple decorative architrave mouldings and a decorative cornice. The seating consists of rows of c.1980s chairs with the simple altar fittings dating from the same period. The windows are largely filled with original stained glass with relatively simple cartouches. - Rathnew National School, school, 1885–1890, Regional interest, registry number 16315010, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI®no=16315010. Detached three-bay single-storey school house of 1888, presently unused. The façade is in uncoursed rubble stone rough granite quoins and brick dressings to the windows, whilst the gable-ended pitched roof is covered in artificial slate with small replacement brick chimneystacks. To the south-facing front there is a gabled porch with plain sheeted timber entrance door. Above the doorway is a cut-granite date stone inscribed: "RATHNEW/NATIONAL SCHOOL/1888". The flat-headed windows have replacement timber frames with hopper openers.
