- WI015-005: Barrow - ring-barrow, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI015-005----. Situated at the base of a natural hollow surrounded by marked slopes on all sides. Oval enclosure (dims. 38m E-W; 24.8m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5-5.5m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 0.3m) and an external flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2-2.5m; D 0.7m). Inside the bank at the N, E and W is a narrow drainage fosse (Wth 0.5m). In view of its location the site could be a landscape feature rather than a ringfort. No visible indication of an entrance or internal features. Listed as a 'standing stone' in the SMR (1986) and as a possible 'children's burial ground' in the RMP (1995). A roughly dressed granite pillar (H 1.77m; 0.27m x 0.26m), pierced by a rectangular slot (H 0.23m; Wth 0.11m) through the E and W faces c. 52cm from the top, reputedly marks the grave of Prince Aralt (Harold) one of the Danish chieftains killed in the Battle of Glenmama. It is also believed that the corner of the field in which the stone now stands was formerly a burial ground. Situated on or close to the summit of a low hill. A possibly kerbed mound (H c. 4.5m). In 1927 it produced at least one cist, which contained cremated bone, and five vessels (one bowl food vessel, a second food vessel and a pygmy cup survive). The mound is said to have been levelled in the 19th century. Not visible at ground level. Described in 1931, this bullaun has since been removed. A granite block (dims. 0.86m x 0.43m; D 0.43m) with a circular basin (diam. 0.25m; D 0.08-0.19m) close to one edge of the stone. The bullaun apparently lay on a small irregular platform in the 'Churchyard Field'; this feature is not visible at ground level. (Walshe 1931, 135-6) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). A townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address; old registers such as the 1901 and 1911 censuses file it under its civil parish and barony.
