On a gentle SSW-facing slope in an area of bog at the base of Spinans Hill which dominates the view to the SE. Good views to N and S with Tuckmill Hill visible to the SW. In a raised area in very marshy terrain. A tall, narrow, granite standing stone (H 1.71m; H of NE face 1.5m), roughly hewn, orientated NE–SW (dims. at base: 0.26-0.28m NE-SW; 0.2-0.25m NW-SE). It is broader at the top (dims. 0.27m NE-SW; 0.3m NW-SE) where it is angled sharply at 45◦ rising (by 0.17m) to the SW. It has a concave SE face. A slight depression around the stone was probably caused by cattle poaching. A Linkardstown-type cist (WI021-057----) lies c. 120m to the NNE. See attached image: • WI021-079----_1 View of standing stone from E. Séamus Ó Murchú, 2022. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Mary Tunney and Gearóid Conroy Date of upload/revision: 21 November 2012 and 15 November 2022 - WI021-090: Bullaun stone, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI021-090----. Discovered in the course of a DAFM archaeological field inspection in advance of a proposed afforestation project. Located in dense vegetation comprising reeds, gorse and grasses, c. 3.3m N of a SE–NW orientated watercourse and on the W-side and base of a narrow, shallow but steep-sided gully/ relict dry watercourse (Wth c. 1.2m; D 0.9m). There is a standing stone (WI021-079---) c. 55m to the SSW, a Linkardstown Burial site (WI021-057----) c. 65m to the NNE and Spinan’s Hill is just visible above the edge of the gully, to the E. A low (H 0.32m) partially earthfast and soil-covered, rounded or concave-sided granite boulder (L 0.59m N–S) with mica inclusions, contains a very shallow (D 5cm), oval depression (surface diams. 0.25 N-S; 0.19m E-W; base diam. 6cm) apparently carved into its flatter, upper surface. The sides and base of the basin are smoother than the other faces of the boulder which is particularly evident given the large mica inclusions present in the boulder. A second, irregular-shaped and vegetation-covered boulder is contiguous at SW. Discovered in the course of a DAFM archaeological field inspection in advance of a proposed afforestation project. A possible archaeological monument – a circular feature - had been identified at the location on DigitalGlobe/Bing aerial imagery (2012). Situated on a slight terrace in a steep, W-facing, pasture slope in the SW-corner of a field with mature hedge-rowed boundaries c. 9m to the W and c. 10m to the S. A low (av. H 1.7m) grass-covered, circular (base diam. c. 20m N-S) mound is steep-sided and round-topped (surface diam. c. 5m). The break of slope at the base is sharp whilst the break of slope at the top is gentle. Significant prehistoric activity is recorded in this general area: a Linkardstown Burial (WI021-057----) c. 155m to the NW and three Cists (WI021-087----, WI021-088---- and WI021-089----) c. 530m to the N and NW. Consequently, this mound is likely to be prehistoric as well, and possibly containing a Neolithic Linkardstown Burial? See attached images: • WI021-091----_1 Mound viewed from W. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
