One of the slot-trenches contained a barbed and tanged arrow head and prehistoric pottery, one of the pits contained a fragment of prehistoric pottery. Large plectrum-shaped enclosure (diam. 44m N-S x 42m E-W) of possible late prehistoric date was excavated in 2020 under licence 17E0292 by Muireann Ní Cheallacháin for IAC Archaeology during construction phase of residential development by Cairn Homes PLC. Cropmark of large enclosure visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 12/07/2013 which also shows the presence of two ring-ditches (WI013-128/129----) inside the enclosure which were also fully excavated. All of these features were excavated in Area 1A which also included the remains of a ploughed out burnt spread, a flat cemetery (WI013-130----), a large enclosure ditch forming a plectrum-shaped enclosure, multiple token cremation burial pits, two ring-ditches (one with internal features), and a large stone-lined kiln, as well as isolated pits, postholes and later agricultural features. Excavation was carried out in Area 1A following the identification of crop marks within the southwest corner of the proposed development a geophysical survey was carried out by Joanna Leigh in 2015 (Licence 15R0124). Detailed gradiometer survey in this area identified two clear circular ditch-type responses, correlating with the location of several curving crop marks, measuring c. 11.25m and 12.25m in diameter and several other responses of potential interest. The circular ditches appear to be contained within a larger ill-defined circular feature (possible enclosure). Following on from the geophysical survey, a programme of testing was undertaken in 2017 by Rob Lynch and Enda Lydon of IAC under licence no. 17E0292 (Lynch and Lydon 2017). Three areas of archaeology were identified in the testing assessment (Archaeological Areas 1–3). The remains are likely to be Bronze Age in date and are similar to other sites that have been recorded within the surrounding landscape. The core of Archaeological Area 1 comprises the two circular anomalies, an outer enclosure and associated features as identified in the geophysical survey and aerial photography in the southwestern portion of the site. Monument consisted of 'a large penannular enclosure truncated at W by a ring-ditch (WI013-128----) that was in turn truncated by a later kiln (WI013-132---) and large pit to the E and by a modern sand extraction quarry to the NW. The sand and gravel quarry destroyed the NW quadrant of the ditch. The enclosure was accessed through a causewayed entrance (Wth 2m) at S. Quite degraded fragments of animal bone were recovered throughout the ditch fills while a small amount of burnt bone was also recovered. The artefacts retrieved from the ditch fills suggest a possible later prehistoric date for the enclosure. Four pits with in-situ funerary vessels were recorded within the penannular enclosure, external of the two ring-ditches. All of these features were excavated in Area 1A which also included the remains of a ploughed out burnt spread, a flat cemetery (WI013-130----), multiple token cremation burial pits, and a large stone-lined kiln, as well as isolated pits, postholes and later agricultural features. Excavation was carried out in Area 1A following the identification of crop marks within the southwest corner of the proposed development a geophysical survey was carried out by Joanna Leigh in 2015 (Licence 15R0124). Detailed gradiometer survey in this area identified two clear circular ditch-type responses, correlating with the location of several curving crop marks, measuring c. 11.25m and 12.25m in diameter and several other responses of potential interest. Three areas of archaeology were identified in the testing assessment (Archaeological Areas 1–3). The remains are likely to be Bronze Age in date and are similar to other sites that have been recorded within the surrounding landscape. The core of Archaeological Area 1 comprises the two circular anomalies, an outer enclosure and associated features as identified in the geophysical survey and aerial photography in the southwestern portion of the site. Monument consisted of a 'ring-ditch (diam c. 10m) truncated by ditch of large enclosure (WI013-127---) at W. The ring-ditch contained three silty fills which showed evidence of deliberate backfilling, and an upper concentration of stone. A large amount of prehistoric pottery sherds were recorded within the stone layer which may suggest that an entire prehistoric pot was deliberately deposited within the stone layer. A small amount of burnt bone was also retrieved from the stone layer. No internal features were present and only rare amounts of burnt bone were recovered from the basal fill of the ring-ditch in the NE quadrant' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 6-7). Monument consisted of 'a ring-ditch (diam c. 10m) located 7m to E of a second ring-ditch (WI013-128----) standing in centre of large enclosure (WI013-127---). The eastern ring-ditch contained two main sandy fills that showed evidence of natural in-filling and deliberate backfilling, and like the ring-ditch to the west, an upper concentration of stone was located only along the south and south-western extent of the ring-ditch. Occasional fragments of cremated bone were recovered from the upper fill C358. A top layer of charcoal rich silty sand (C357) was located in the southeast quadrant of the ring-ditch. This layer contained frequent amounts of cremated bone and may represent a secondary token deposition of human cremated bone within the backfilled ring-ditch. A few sherds of prehistoric pottery were recovered from this layer, while a large amount of flint debitage was found throughout the ring-ditch. A token cremation burial pit was dug into the upper fill of the ring ditch between the stone layer and the charcoal rich layer. The burial pit contained two silty sand fills with occasional charcoal and a larger concentration of cremated bone noted in the top fill. A possible posthole was also dug into the upper fill of the ring-ditch c.2m to the northeast of the token cremation pit. The posthole contained a charcoal rich sandy silt (C362) and may have functioned as a marker for the secondary burial deposition within the ring-ditch' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 7-8). Monument consisted of a'shallow spread of burnt mound material that was likely truncated by plough action in the recent past was recorded at the W extent of the site parallel to the Three Trout’s stream that runs north–south outside the site limit. The shallow spread sealed a possible trough feature which was sub-oval in plan and contained the same burnt mound material. Four pits were located directly to the east and are likely associated with the burnt spread activity. The largest of the four pits, pit C513, was located 2m to the southeast of the burnt spread and contained two fills with occasional charcoal and heat affected stone inclusions. Pits C516 and C519 were located within 1m of each other and 2–3m to the northeast of the burnt spread. They each contained a single fill with rare to occasional charcoal fleck inclusions. Monument consisted of 'a large stone-lined kiln and large stone filled pit were recorded truncating the eastern extent of the large enclosure ditch. The kiln (C484) was oriented northeast– southwest with an elevated firing chamber located at the southwest and a lower drying chamber at the northeast. Large boulders were used in the construction of the flue and at least three un-mortared courses were recorded in the circular fire chamber. The stone lining showed evidence of being extremely heat affected which indicates that a large temperature was used in the kiln or that it was used over a long period of time. A single fill of charcoal and ash material was recorded in the flue lying above the in-situ oxidised base which possibly represents a last rake out; lying downslope from the firing chamber. The stony backfill lay directly on the oxidised surface within the firing chamber. Multiple stone tools including stone hones and hammerstones were recovered from the stone backfill. A probable in-situ stone baffle was identified separating the flue from the drying chamber and a single charcoal rich fill was identified within the drying chamber. A large sub-square pit was located directly abutting the kiln to the west and some of the primary stone rubble fill of the pit lay above the kiln. The fact that a lot of the stone rubble was heat affected suggests that the kiln and pit are contemporary and are associated with the same industrial activity' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 22). Monument consisted of a 'heavily disturbed burial ground measuring c. 12.4m x 6m and containing twelve burials and seven clusters of disarticulated human bone was identified in the northeast of the site within a localised area of sand within a geological ridge of gravel. This gravel ridge appears to have been chosen specifically for the location of the burials as no burials were identified outside of the gravel deposit. All the burials were oriented roughly SW-NE apart from Sk12. Although historic truncation though ploughing action had disturbed most of the grave cuts, they all appeared to be rounded rectangular in shape and very shallow. The grave of Sk9 was the most undisturbed grave with a depth of 0.2m recorded and a linear placement of large cobbles along the grave cut interpreted as a possible stone lining. The grave of Sk11 may also have had a stone lining as five medium-sized stones appeared to line the cut at the northeast end. The majority of grave fills consisted of moderately compact silty sand with common small stone and gravel inclusions, while the graves of Sk 6 and Sk 7 were filled with a looser sandy silt. The graves of Sk 10 and Sk 12 were filled with silty gravels. No grave cut could be determined for the sub-circular deposit of grave fill C227 surrounding Sk 4, which was similar in consistency to the other fills, or for C229 surrounding Sk 5 which comprised of more compact silty sand. All the graves contained fragmented human remains with graves C252, C255 and C257 containing more complete human skeletons. The graves were located across the sandy deposit C214 in loosely defined rows, with graves C255 and C257 (containing skeletons 10 and 11) abutting each other. Half of the burials contained no artefacts, but flint was recovered from the fills of four graves, while a metal loop was recovered from the gravefill of Sk 8. Significantly, a fragment of highly degraded antler tine was retrieved from the gravefill of Sk 6. The location of the antler near the skull suggests that it may have been deliberately placed. All of the graves were covered by plough soil C263 which extended across Area 2 and consisted of moderately loose gravelly silt with frequent stone inclusions and also contained disarticulated bone B15' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 30). Monument consisted of 'a crescent shaped kiln located in the centre of Area 2C c. 4.5m south of the burial ground [WI013-133----], with a potential fire chamber, drying chamber and flue identified. The fire chamber which measured approximately 1.2m x 1.0m was stone-lined with a combination of rectangular and flat heat-affected stones, and while some had become dislodged, there remained some in situ. A mix of greyish-white and red sand and clay filled the fire chamber with evidence of in-situ burning along the sides. The flue extended for c. 1.9m to the east from the fire chamber and contained a basal fill of fairly compact sandy silt with occasional small stone, and an upper fill (which also extended into the fire chamber) of fairly loose silt with abundant charcoal inclusions. A drying chamber of similar size was identified at the southeast end of the kiln filled by very loose black sand containing frequent charcoal, slag and fire-cracked stone, and a layer of burnt charcoal-rich silty sand. An upper fill of friable silt with moderate charcoal inclusions covered the entirety of the kiln' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 31). The remnants of the last use of the kiln within the drying chamber consisted of a charcoal rich silt. The upper three fills were backfilled into the kiln after it went out of use and due to the presence of large stones, may be related to an above ground structure associated with the kiln' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 34). The stratigraphy within the furnace indicated that the feature was re-used as a smelting furnace as there is a non-oxidised fill sealing the base of the feature. The in-situ oxidisation was recorded as a 0.1m wide ring of burnt clay surrounding the upper fills. The main fill of the furnace contained frequent chunks of charcoal and metalworking waste in the form of slag, while the upper fill contained similar inclusions but to a lesser extent' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 34-5). Monument was described as following; 'There were three foci of activity in Area 3B, with cremation pit C602 and pit C609 located in the north of the site, pit C605 located in the eastern central area and postholes C600 and C607 located in the south of the site. Pit C602 contained a shallow cremation deposit consisting of a basal fill (C604) of friable silty sand with very frequent charcoal and large burnt bone fragments (Plate 35) which may represent a direct deposit from the funeral pyre. The upper fill (C603) was a friable silty sand which still contained charcoal and burnt bone fragments but to a lesser extent than C604 and may have been placed to seal the cremation. No other cremations were identified in this area. A large, shallow pit (C609) was located c. 2m east of the cremation and contained a single fill of friable silty sand with occasional charcoal and moderate stone inclusions. A circular pit (C605) was located c. 10.6m southeast of the cremation and contained a single fill of loose sandy silt with large charcoal fragments concentrated in the southwestern extent of the fill. C600 was a possible truncated posthole, c .12m south of pit C605, containing a single fill of friable silty sand with occasional charcoal fragments. Located c. 3.8m to the southwest, was a further possible posthole, C607, the single fill (C608) of which contained frequent charcoal inclusions and frequent stones particularly along the edge of the cut which may have originally acted as packing stones' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 35). Ditch-barrow in area 4A was excavated in 2020 under licence 17E0292 by Muireann Ní Cheallacháin for IAC Archaeology during construction phase of residential development by Cairn Homes PLC. Monument was described as following; 'Ring-ditch was annular in plan with a 3.5m internal diameter and a depth of only 0.2m. The shallow nature of the ring ditch is possibly indicative of modern truncation though ploughing. C3 contained a main silty sand fill (C4) present throughout the length of the feature along with four primary charcoal deposits recorded along the base (C25, C37, C41 & C43). These primary deposits did not appear to contain any burnt bone inclusions. Two middle charcoal deposits (C6 & C21) did not appear to contain burnt bone either. Three definite discrete cremation deposits (C5, C10 and C42) containing frequent charcoal and moderate burnt bone inclusions were recorded directly above the main fill (C4). A possible heat affected flint chunk was retrieved from cremation deposit C42. The cremation deposits were all shallow in nature which suggests they were deposited on the backfilled barrow ditch and were not contained in individual cremation pits. A small shallow circular pit (C30) was recorded less than 1m to the east of the ring barrow and it contained a single silty sand fill with moderate charcoal inclusions. The function of pit C30 may be associated in some form with the ring barrow (C3), however no other features were recorded in the periphery of the ring barrow' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 36-7). Burnt mound in area 5 was excavated in 2020 under licence 17E0292 by Muireann Ní Cheallacháin for IAC Archaeology during construction phase of residential development by Cairn Homes PLC. Monument was described as following; 'Mound A was a large D-shaped deposit of burnt mound material in the southwest of the site, close to a stream, with no associated trough features identified. The extent of excavated material measured c. 17m x 8.4m but the burnt mound likely extended further west towards the stream, under an area which was not being impacted on by the development. C611 was a compact layer at the base of the burnt mound identified in the north, east and south facing sections, which measured c. 8 x 5m in the central/northeast area of Mound A. It is likely that this is the location of the initial build-up of material associated with burnt mound activity. C612 was a second, more extensive layer of looser burnt mound material which had built-up to a thickness of 0.5m, potentially representing the main phase of activity. The upper spread of material in Mound A was more compact grey-black silty clay and burnt stone which did not cover the entirety of C612 and was a much thinner spread. This may represent the final phase of activity at the site' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 38). Burnt mound in area 5 was excavated in 2020 under licence 17E0292 by Muireann Ní Cheallacháin for IAC Archaeology during construction phase of residential development by Cairn Homes PLC. Monument was described as following; 'Located c. 2.5m to the northeast was a second, much smaller sub-rectangular spread of burnt mound material (Mound B) consisting of a single layer of loose, black silty sand and burnt stone, under which a trough feature was identified in the southwest corner. The trough contained a single fill, of a similar material to C615, deposited once the trough had gone out of use. The trough and eastern edge of Mound B was cut by a modern field drain, containing a single fill (C616) with frequent stone inclusions, and further modern field drains also cut the eastern and northern edge of Mound A [WI013-139----] ' (Ní Cheallacháin and Spencer 2020, 38-9).
