Situated on a gentle S-facing slope at the edge of steeper ground. Circular area (diam. 28m) with a raised interior defined by an earthen bank (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.2-2m) from NW-E-SW with an outer drystone facing, possibly not original. There is an outer fosse (Wth 1-1.8m; D 0.3m) from N-SE. The interior is level and appears to have been infilled to provide an extension to a horse-training paddock to the W where both the bank and fosse have been removed. The interior is now c. 1m higher than the outer ground level. No indication of an entrance or internal features. Situated on a gentle W-facing slope overlooking a broad valley. A rectangular church (WI019-018001-) with a splayed doorway in the S wall, and a splayed window towards the E end of the N wall. It contains a possible subrectangular granite font (WI019-018003-) and a holy water stoup (WI019-018004-) in the NE corner. Described in the Ordnance Survey Letters of 1838-40 'a burying place on the south side, but it is now unfrequented and overgrown with thorns' (O'Flanagan 1928, 94). The graveyard was described in 1928 as 'the old graveyard on the south side is now disused' (Ronan 1928, 139). A rectangular granite block (L 0.73m; Wth 0.48m; T 0.4m) with one side broken away indicating that it was originally wider. The rectangular basin survives along three sides (D 0.21m; L at top 0.43m; L at base 0.42m; est. Wth 0.36m). The sides of the basin are almost vertical. The rim is quite damaged, but originally was probably flat. There is no evidence for a drain hole, though this may have come away with the broken side of the font. A holy water stoup associated with a church (WI019-018001-) and graveyard (WI019-018002-). Described in the Ordnance Survey Letters of 1838-40 as 'there is a stone 60 pounds weight, with a small basin, 8 inches [0.2m] diameter and 3 [0.07m] deep cut into one end of it. This was a holy water vase and appears to be of great antiquity. Near this lies part of a square baptismal font (WI019-018003-)' (O'Flanagan 1928, 94). Wicklow, in May 2001. The site was detected during the monitoring of topsoil-stripping for the Hollybrook-Wicklow Bord Gáis Éireann pipeline. The Kilmartin site is in a low sheltered valley where a small unnamed stream runs north-west/south-east. In the late 20th century the stream was placed into an underground pipe at this point. The ground climbs steeply on the south-western side, while to the north-west it rises sharply, crossing the townland boundary into Barnacoyle Big. The site, prior to topsoil-stripping, presented itself as a low-lying uncultivated area of poorly drained land surrounded by fields in pasture or under crops. The initial topsoil-stripping revealed spreads of heat-shattered stone and charcoal. An area measuring 15.5m east-west by 7m was hand-cleaned. This revealed a series of cut features with associated fills and the remnants of burnt mound material. A charcoal and heat-shattered stone area was apparent in the eastern side of the area cleaned. This subrectangular area represented a trough with a timber-lined base. Two clusters of post-holes were detected in the north-western and south-western corners of the trough. This timber-lined trough comprised a shallow rectangular cut with straight sides and a flat base. It measured 2.19m east-west by 0.94m, with a depth of 0.34m. There were two substantial waterlogged oak planks at the base of the cut. The northernmost oak plank measured 1.78m by 0.2m (max.) by 0.08-0.12m thick. The width of the plank tapered towards each end. No bark was present. The southernmost plank was also a split oak plank, and measured 2.08m by 0.34m (max.) by 0.08-0.12m thick. No tool-marks were visible on either of the planks. The fill of the trough was a moderately compact black silty clay with frequent inclusions of charcoal, fire-cracked limestone, sandstone and granite fragments. This fill extended throughout the cut and sealed the oak planks. The eastern part of the trough was cut by a modern pipe drain. Two distinct clusters of stake-holes were present at the north-western and south-western corners of the trough cut. Both clusters sat in shallow depressions, which opened into the corners of the trough. It is significant that both clusters contained eight posts. This suggests that the clusters may be contemporary and represent pairs of corner posts. An area of fire-reddened or oxidised clay was revealed immediately east of the stake-hole clusters. A large pit was uncovered to the west of the trough with the timber base. This pit, which measured 3.3m east-west by 1.8m by 0.8m deep, contained some six fills of silty clays with occasional lenses of heat-shattered stone. Several fragments of wood were recovered from the fills of the pit. Examination of these fragments has suggested that they represent modern root activity. Spreads of heat-shattered stone and charcoal were immediately visible when initial stripping took place. This material survived in the south-western reaches of the area cleaned and in the north. The south-western portion of the mound remnant comprised an irregular-shaped spread of heat-shattered stone and charcoal-stained soil which measured 1.5m east-west by 3.6m, with a maximum thickness of 0.06-0.1m. In this area it was found to overlie natural stratigraphy. The shape of the southern spread appears to be the result of post-depositional processes, in particular repeated land improvement. A northern spread of burnt mound material was also noted after topsoil-stripping. This spread measured some 4.9m east-west by 4.4m, with a maximum depth of 0.1m as exposed. This spread overlay natural boulder clay stratigraphy in places. However, the bed of the stream, which had formerly flowed in this area prior to being inserted into a piped channel, remained as a series of wet gravel deposits. This latter deposit consisted of a grey waterlogged series of sands and gravels. A small cluster of four stake-holes, which formed an approximate east-west alignment, was detected in the south of the area examined. Diameters of 0.08-0.12m and depths of 0.07-0.13m were recorded for these (Bennett 2003, 423-4). Wicklow, is to the east of the proposed Kilmartin N11 interchange. The ground is elevated, with the Wicklow Mountains to the west and the Irish Sea to the east. A number of stake-holes, post-holes and burnt deposits were excavated. The features were uncovered during topsoil-stripping as part of the excavation of borrow-pit material for the road construction, which was monitored under licence 02E1418 (No. 1977 below). No structural pattern emerged. All evidence pointed to an isolated scatter of stake-holes, possibly truncated by later agricultural activity (Bennett 2004, 537). 02E0754 Testing was undertaken at Kilmartin, Co. Wicklow, on the site of a proposed borrow pit (Borrow Pit 9.1) associated with the new N11 Road Scheme, from 22 to 24 May 2002. This was carried out using a mechanical digger fitted with a flat, toothless bucket. Four trenches were excavated, with twenty branches at right angles to the main trenches. Material of probable archaeological significance was recorded in three trenches. The locations of the potential archaeological deposits suggest a density of archaeological material along the south and west of the proposed site. Trench 2, in the west of the site, produced datable evidence (pottery) that may be medieval but is possibly Bronze Age. The fact that identical pottery was found 76m apart in this trench suggested that the material may be associated with quite an extensive site. The clustering of the archaeological deposits in the trenches also suggested that there may be further significant clusters of deposits outside the area of the present test-trenches. Pits (post-pits?) in Trench 2e and post-holes and a linear cut in the south of Trench 1 may indicate large enclosures. The material in Trench 3, while also varied, may represent lesser, localised activity but also has further archaeological potential (Bennett 2004, 537).
