Aligned roughly N-S, with the N stone (H 1m; Wth 0.75m; T 0.75m) c. 1.7m away from the S stone (H 1.03m; 0.65m N-S; 0.55m E-W). Known as the 'Gossan stones' and 'Gossam stones'. Drumgoff Barracks dates from around 1800, and was one of a group of barracks built on the Military Road constructed after the 1798 rising. Not long after it was constructed, Michael Dwyer and the other rebels were captured or surrendered so it had a very short life as a barracks. The other barracks in the group were at Laragh (demolished), Aughavannagh (an An Oige hostel in 1993, present status unknown) and Glencree (now restored by OPW). 19th century crenellated house which replaced 18th century barracks. According to the local landowner who was informed by the previous landowner that this was the site of an 'old mud chapel' in a field known locally as Killalane (pers. comm. Richard Cullen 27/11/2019). Present remains consist of a square-shaped slightly sunken area (approx. dims. 14m x 14m) defined by a pile of stones on E side and by a scarp at W which is intersected by a field wall at N. Situated in river valley on W facing slope of rising ground with the summit of Paddock Hill 720m to E and Glenmacnass River 180m to SW. Stone pair (WI017-006---) known as the 'Gossan Stones' stand 1km to NE. A bullaun stone (WI018-038001-) was moved from these stones and relocated to the grounds of Glendalough House. May be the same site as the church site of Killafeen [church of Aifín/ Killalane?] recorded in 1945 as ‘the site of the old church is near the eastern boundary of Laragh East, almost opposite the stream which divides Trooperstown and Castlekevin’ (Price 1945, 36). He goes on to state that ‘the site was near the place where the road leading to Glendalough from the east crossed the river’ (ibid., 36). No evidence of any church site could be found in the location marked on the RMP map for Co. Wicklow. The above 'Killalane Church Site' differs in the location of the church within the townland described by Price, however it is possible that he was incorrect when locating the church in the eastern quadrant of Laragh East townland. The placename 'Killalane' refers to the field in which this sunken earthwork is located and could be a corruption of 'Killafeen'. The earthwork in this field be the remains of a Penal chapel known as 'Killalane' or the medieval church of 'Killafeen'. On a S facing slope above the Avonmore River, in an area of recently felled forestry. A granite boulder 1.9m ENE-WSW x c. 1.4m NNW-SSE. Flat topped, level, and partially covered by sod at the N. Stands 45cm high above the ground at the S, where the ground level falls away. The stone features 2 basins. The larger of the two is a circular bowl 34 x 30cm across, and 14-15cm deep. 10cm to the W is a second, shallower bowl 28 x 26cm across, and 7cm deep. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Mill (water), 1845–1865, Regional interest, registry number 16314002, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16314002. Detached five-bay four-storey mill, built c.1855, now derelict. The building is rectangular in plan with a small lean-to shed extension to the north. The building is constructed in rubble with some portions of the façade rendered, whilst the half-hipped roof is slated. There are two entrances to the east elevation, both with replacement timber doors with sidelights. The uniformly arranged windows have the remains of timber sash, casement top-hung frames. There is a small lean-to shed extension to the north. The building is set within overgrown grounds.
- RIC barracks, 1845–1865, Regional interest, registry number 16314003, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16314003. Detached three-bay two-storey former constabulary barrack, built c.1855 and now is use as a private house. The building, which appears to have been extended to the rear in the mid 1900s, is roughly square in plan with a projecting gabled porch to the front (west) elevation. The façade is finished in unpainted roughcast with moulded quoins, but is now largely covered in ivy growth. The slated hipped roof has a slight overhang and rendered chimneystacks. The pitched roof of the porch is also slated and has an overhang supported on timber brackets. The entrance is to the north face of the porch. The windows are mainly flat-headed with two over two timber sash frames, though some larger windows to the north and south elevations have metal frames of c.1950, and that to the porch is semi-circular headed with timber multiple-pane frames. Replacement metal rainwater goods. The building is set on an elevated position next to a roadside, but is separated from the road by a garden enclosed by a tall wall.
- The Old School House, school, 1830–1850, Regional interest, registry number 16314004, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16314004. Detached five-bay part single part two-storey Tudor-style national school built c.1840 and now in use as house. The national school consists of two gable-fronted two-storey ‘wings’ linked by a single-storey with attic section, which itself has a gable-ended projecting porch. It is constructed in rubble with brick lintels, whilst the pitched roof is slated and has stone parapets with corbels, rendered chimneystacks and some Velux windows. The entrance is to the south face of the porch. The windows are flat-headed and mainly have lattice-paned timber casement frames. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted timber shop signboard over one of the ground floor windows to front. The national school is set along the side of a road and surrounded by a spacious garden.
- Saint John's Church (Derrylossary), church/chapel, 1845–1850, Regional interest, registry number 16314005, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16314005. Detached three-bay single-storey Board of First Fruits style Church of Ireland church with three-stage tower, built 1847. The building consists of the rectangular gable-ended nave with a small gabled vestry projection to the east and the tower to the west. The façade is finished in unpainted roughcast with granite string courses to the tower. The pitched roof of the nave is slated as is that of the vestry projection, whilst the roof of the tower is hidden by a crenellated parapet with tall corner pinnacles. The entrance is to the west face of the tower and consists of a pointed arch timber tongue and groove door screen with double door with strap hinges. Stone steps with wrought-iron guardrail. The windows are uniform with pointed arch heads, timber Y-tracery frames and small leaded hexagonal panes. The church is set in a clearing in a well-wooded area with a short lane leading to the road.
- Laragh Bridge, bridge, 1955–1960, Regional interest, registry number 16314006, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16314006. Single-span road bridge over Gleanmacnass River, built in 1956. The bridge is constructed in squared rubble with rounded granite coping to the parapets, whilst the segmental arch is edged in concrete.
- Laragh Castle, barracks, 1800–1805, Regional interest, registry number 16314007, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16314007. Detached five-bay two-storey former barracks with single-bay three-stage tower, built 1804 but with large sections to both the north and south demolished c.1860 and the remainder remodelled in romantic castle style for use as a house. The building now consists of a main rectangular section with the off-set tower to the north, porch projection to the west front, lean-to projections to the rear and a bartizan to the south-west. The façade is finished in unpainted lined render with granite dressings to the openings, whilst the rear is finished in roughcast. The front elevation of the main section, the tower, porch and the bartizan have corbelled crenellated parapets. The pitched roof of the main section is slated and has rendered chimneystacks, however the roofs of the porch, tower and bartizan are all hidden by their respective parapets. The entrance is to the south face of the porch and consists of a panelled timber door (reached via a short flight of stone steps). The windows are a mixture of semi-circular and flat-headed with eleven over six and six over six timber sash frames. Cast-iron rainwater goods. The building is set on a well wooded rise at the end of a long narrow lane with its large grounds enclosed by a tall rubble wall, now largely obscured by trees. The grounds, which are entered through an elliptical-arched gateway to the west, include the remains of a yard with outbuildings (to the east of the house).
- Avonmore House, gate lodge, 1940–1960, Regional interest, registry number 16402409, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16402409. Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge in neo-Georgian style, built c.1950. To the rear is a large single-storey extension of c.1985. The original portion of the gate lodge is in rubble with granite quoins and brick dressings, whilst the extension is finished in painted render. The slated hipped roof of the original section has an overhang supported on brackets, and rendered chimneystacks. The extension has a similar roof, however it is covered in artificial slates and does not have brackets or chimneystacks. The entrance consists of a panelled timber door set under a timber Doric portico with pediment. The windows are flat-headed and have six over six timber sash frames, with top-hung timber frames to those to the extension. Metal rainwater goods. The gate lodge is set at the side of the main drive to Avonmore House.
