Notified by Mr Jean-Charles Caillere and visible on Google Earth aerial imagery (21-7-2021), and on MapGenie aerial imagery (2004-2006), as the cropmark of a circular area (est. diam. c. 18m). Subsurface archaeological deposits may survive intact. Also visible in the same aerial imagery is a second enclosure (WI037-034----) c. 20m to the SSW, with a burial mound (WI037-001----) c. 13m beyond that again to the SSW, while only c. 10m to the NNE, a standing stone (WI037-028----) is visible. Combined, the four monuments comprise a significant archaeological presence on a short length of ground (L c. 140m). Towards the SW edge of a low ridge c. 240m E of the Derreen River, a tributary of the River Slaney, in mixed tillage and pasture. Notified by Mr Jean-Charles Caillere and visible on Google Earth aerial imagery (21-7-2021), and on MapGenie aerial imagery (2004-2006), as the cropmark of a circular area (est. diam. c. 30m) defined by traces of two narrow, concentric fosses SSE-SW and at NW. The cropmark of a second, smaller circular feature (est. diam. c. 5m) is visible in the W sector of the enclosed area. Also visible in the same aerial imagery is a burial mound (WI037-001----) only c. 13m to the SSW, along with a second enclosure (WI037-033----) c. 20m to the NNE, and a standing stone (WI037-028----) beyond again, c.10m to the NNE. It should be noted that the concentric elements visible in the aerial image of this monument are similar to those in the image of the burial mound (WI037-001----) to the immediate SSW suggesting that it too may have been a burial mound, and sub-surface archaeological deposits may survive intact. Combined, the four monuments comprise a significant archaeological presence on a short length of ground (L c. 140m). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 9 March 2023 - WI037-035: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI037-035----. Located on level ground that slopes away gently towards to the W towards the Dereen River, which is c. 190m away from the centre of the site (c. 95m OD), and slopes gently upwards to the E of the site. Landscape is characterised by pastoral farming with regular field boundaries, apart from along the Dereen River where the field boundaries meander along the river course. Site located adjacent to rectangular-plan Liscolman Burial Ground (WI037-005---), which occupies the SE quadrant of the enclosure, and c. 450m ENE of an impressive ringfort at Tankardstown to the W side of the Deeren River. This large enclosure is visible on Google Earth aerial photograph of the site (July 2021). It consists of a circular feature (ext. dims c. 130.5m N-S x 116.8mm E-W) that is defined by a ditch (Wth c. 6.1m m to N) that is mostly clearly visible along the N arc, visible intermittently along the SW quadrant, and obscured by the burial ground and its walled enclosure to the SE quadrant. No definitive evidence for an entrance gap. The site of this enclosure encompassing Liscolman Burial Ground hints that it may have been an ecclesiastical enclosure associated with an early religious foundation. Compiled by: T.J.
