Situated on a low rise overlooking a marked SE-facing slope. Circular mound (diam. c. 54m; H 1.8m) which when excavated in 1872, produced a rectangular cist (L 1.07m; Wth 0.61m) containing a cremation and a small bronze razor. Human skeletons are reputed to have been found in a sandpit on the E side of the ridge (extending N-S). Not visible at ground level. Situated at the foot of a slope in a V-shaped stream valley. The remains of a horizontal mill, recently discovered during drainage operations. It consists of a rectangular pool, lined with wooden planks, with posts which originally supported the wheel-house. The pool was fed by a leat via a wooden 'flume' or chute, which was preserved, and a second leat brought the water back to the nearby stream. The horizontally mounted mill paddles, one of which was preserved, were turned in the stream of water. A sample of wood gave a dendrochronological date of AD 744 +/-9 (Palaeoecology Centre, QUB). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Newcastle House, house, 1800–1820, Regional interest, registry number 16310017, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16310017. Detached three-bay two-storey over basement Regency style house, built c.1810, with late 20th-century porch and conservatory additions. The building is roughly square in plan with two relatively shallow full-height curved bays to front. The façade is finished in painted roughcast, whilst the relatively low-pitched slated hipped roof has a pronounced overhang supported on plain brackets, and rendered chimneystacks. The entrance is covered by a largely glazed, conservatory-like, gable-ended porch. The windows are flat-headed and have six over six and three over three timber sash frames and painted stone sills. To the west elevation, and positioned over the basement light well, there is a hipped roof conservatory. uPVC rainwater goods. Large stable block to the north-west part of which is now converted to a dwelling.
- Newcastle Lodge, house, 1770–1790, Regional interest, registry number 16310018, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI&regno=16310018. Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1780. The façade is finished in painted roughcast, with slate cladding to part of the south elevation and plain painted render to a small lean-to section to the rear. The hipped roof is slated and has rendered chimneystacks. The entrance consists of a panelled timber door and semi-circular fanlight with ‘petal’ tracery. The windows are flat-headed with most filled with timber sash frames, six over six and three over three, with c.1980s replacement timber frames to some windows to the south and rear elevations. uPVC rainwater goods. Outbuildings to west.
