Situated on the lower N slopes of Trooperstown Hill. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a small circular-shaped enclosure (max. diam. 30m). Monument is clearly visible on the edge of forestry on DigitalGlobe aerial photographs. Recent inspection carried out by Coillte Environmental Officer identified the location of the monument which was recorded as consisting of a low stone cairn (dims. 9.5m E-W x 9m N-s x H 0.75m) standing in centre of a large enclosure defined by a series of small low stones visible on aerial photographs. Situated at a break in a marked W-facing slope. Levelled square enclosure (dims. 30m x 30m) now indicated by linear scree of small stones along its N and W sides. No other visible remains, but part of granite rotary quern was found on the site. On an east facing slope of reclaimed grazing, locally known as the Church Field. An earthfast granite boulder, 1.15m N-S, 1.22m E-W, and 20cm high. The stone features two basins. The W bowl is steep-sided and circular, and measures 32cm across, and 11cm deep. The E bowl is shallower and oval, and measures 30cm x 20cm across, and 7cm deep. On level ground at the foot of a steep, S-facing slope in historic woodland. A sub-circular area (diam. c.5m) is defined by a low earth and stone bank (Wth 2.5-4.5m; H 0.5-0.7m) partly truncated at N by a modern path (ext. diams. 12.1m N-S; 10.5m E-W). On a steep NE facing slope, on an elevated hillside with panoramic views to the N, E and S. Consists of an irregular, earthfast granite boulder that measures 1.3m NE-SW x 1.1m NW-SE, and stands 20cm above the surface at the upper (SW) end and 50cm above the lower (NE) end where the ground falls away. There is a small bowl at the upper end of the stone. The bowl is slightly oval and measures 23cm x 21cm across and 9cm deep. Date of upload: 07 December 2012

According to Lynch (1994, 639) there is a holy well known as ‘Fraughan’s Well’ in the townland of Trooperstown that is mentioned in the 1930s Irish Folklore Commission, Schools Manuscript Collection (IFC S 918: 155; IFC S 1127: 48). The folklore manuscripts recorded the tradition that a ‘holy well near where the priest said Mass in the penal days. Cures for sores and pains. Unlucky to interfere with holy well. The Blessed Virgin said to have been seen at the well’ (Lynch 1994, 639). This well is located beside a mass rock and in the field called ‘Church Field’. A bullaun stone (WI024-027---) is located in a field known as the ‘Church Field’. Holy well located at the side of the road that was named after the Fraughan family who owned the land in the 1800's (pers. comm. Rosaleen Durkin). Large boulder situated on the side of the road where it has been incorporated into the stone wall of a property boundary. Stone is not in its original location and was taken from another location and inserted into present property boundary roadside wall.
