The tumulus was apparently opened in the early 19th century and yielded an urn of coarse pottery containing bones and ashes (Waddell 1990, 166). Situated on flat reclaimed grassland with Coves Brook marking townland boundary with Carnew immediately to N and NE. Enclosure (WI047-013----) 70m to NNW. The village of Carnew lies 600m to NE. Outline of circular-shaped enclosure (approx. int. diam. 49m N-S) defined by a fosse which is clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph. The monument is located on wet grassland that has been reclaimed with linear drainage channels clearly visible intersecting the enclosure at NW and SE. On a mixed scrub and rough-grazing rise in tillage, immediately S of the W-flowing ‘Coves Brook’. Named ‘Site of Moat’ on the first edition (1840) of the OS 6-inch map (‘Site of’ indicating a levelled monument and 'Moat' an earthwork, possibly a moated-site) and shown immediately E of a large, irregularly oval-shaped feature (L c. 90m NE-SW; Wth c. 48m NW-SE). Not recorded on the later OS 25-inch map (1909) which shows the location as scrub-covered, with a gravel pit to the NE. While apparently levelled, sub-surface archaeological features may survive intact.
