The castle of Wicklow (WI025-013----) was granted to Strongbow by Henry II in 1173 (Scott and Martin 1978, 121), which appears to indicate that there was a pre-Norman settlement at this site. The name is derived from the Scandinavian; either Vikingalo, 'meadow of the Vikings', or Vik-lo 'meadow of the bay' (Oftedal 1976, 130). The 'King's street' is mentioned in a deed of 1256-68 (MacNeill 1950, 131) and although the town went into decline having been captured in 1301 it came to prominence once again in the late 16th and 17th centuries (Bradley and King 1989, 68). Kerrigan (1995, 38) states that in 1576 what must have been earthwork ramparts were constructed around Wicklow and Arklow. In addition to the Franciscan Friary (WI025-012002-) there is a reference to a Benedictine convent having existed here from 1448 to 1470 and to a leper hospital in existence in 1578 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 325, 357). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008 - WI025-012002: Religious house - Franciscan friars, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI025-012002-. Situated at the NW end of the town (WI025-012----). Founded during the reign of Henry III (1216-72), and first referred to in 1325 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 261). A section of the N wall of the nave (H c. 6m) and parts of the S transept of the Franciscan friary, survives, constructed of uncoursed slaty limestone. The S wall of the transept has a round-headed three-light window, with traces of sandstone jambs. The nave has a large inserted arch, and the only original feature is part of a window splay at the E end. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008 - WI025-012015: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI025-012015-. Archaeological monitoring under licence no. 97E0448 of ground reduction for the raft foundation of a new office building at 5 Church Street, Wicklow, revealed the upper level of a probable medieval pit. As the development was not going to destroy the feature it was deemed sufficient, following consultation with Dúchas, to record the feature without excavating it. Part of a medieval stone mortar and three sherds of glazed hand-built local medieval pottery were found on the surface of the main fill of the pit as it was being cleaned prior to recording. Parallels for the mortar have been found in excavations of medieval strata in Waterford City. At least nine similar pits and other medieval features were found during previous excavations in advance of development of a site on the other side of Church Street'. Date of upload: 22 October 2012 - WI025-012016: Habitation site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWI025-012016-. The development site lies at the corner of Church Street and Wentworth Place, Wicklow, and is within the zone of archaeological potential for the town. Recent excavations by James Eogan in an adjoining property (Excavations 1997, 202, 97E0118) identified a series of medieval pits and two shallow ditches. Test-trenching was carried out by Una Cosgrave and involved the mechanical excavation of two trenches (No. 698 above). Limited archaeological deposits consisting of a light brown, fine, sandy clay with occasional charcoal flecking were recorded in both trenches. No datable material was recovered from this layer. Given the identification of potentially significant deposits revealed during the test-trenching programme, Dúchas The Heritage Service recommended the archaeological monitoring of all further subsurface works. Monitoring took place over two days and revealed the same formation processes of modern rubble and gravels sealing rubble layers containing red brick as identified in the test-trenching programme. The potentially archaeologically significant clay with occasional charcoal flecking was revealed in the north-eastern corner of the site. However, as excavation for foundation trenches only proceeded to a depth of c. 0.65m in this area, only the top 50mm of this layer was exposed. As this layer was only revealed in a 1m-long east-west foundation trench, it was not possible to define fully its extent, character and condition. There would be no further disturbance caused to this layer by the development. No datable material was recovered, and no further archaeological features or finds were revealed. Date of upload: 22 October 2012 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) - Post box, 1910–1920, Regional interest, registry number 16002015, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WI®no=16002015.
