  Test excavation (licence no. 07E0057) identified a V-shaped linear feature orientated north-west/south-east (Elliot 2007, 295).   Description

  Quarry depicted as a narrow rectangular-shaped excavated area (approx. dims. 64m N-S x 10m E-W) aligned on a NW-SE axis running parallel to the public road on the 1837 ed. OSi six-inch map.  Road forms townland boundary at this junction with Flemingtown.  Outlined as a narrow rectangular-shaped area on the last edition of the OSi six-inch map.  Depicted in a similar fashion on the 1863 ed.   Description

  Geophysical survey (05R137) identified the remains of an oval enclosure 50m x 40m in diameter which coincides with an area of raised ground. A small circular enclosure (c.15m diam.) with a south-eastern entrance is indicated within its interior, as are several pit responses. As series of underlying weak deposits may indicate earlier settlement of suggest more than one phase of occupation (Nicholls & Shiel 2005 10). • DU004-046 House - Bronze Age
  Description

  Excavations in 2002 revealed remnants of a circular structure (diam.7m) with a porch -like entrance in the south-east. It was defined by a double ring of seven postholes. The entrance consisted of an arrangement of four large posts, two internal and two external. Finds from the house include a small, polished porcellanite axehead, five flint waste flakes and sherds of Middle Bronze age pottery (Byrne, 2003, 136).   Description

  A circular enclosure visible as a crop mark on an aerial photograph together with other features that could indicate a possible field system (DU005-102----) (SMR file; pers. comm. T. Condit). Located towards base of a hill that slopes from east downwards where it is bounded by the outer relief road. Excavation (08E053, 08E055) of the outer relief road revealed Bronze Age settlement to the west of the enclosure.   Description

  A field system visible as a crop mark on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13 together with a circular enclosure (DU005-101----) (SMR file; pers. comm. T. Condit). Located towards base of a hill that slopes from east downwards where it is bounded by the outer relief road. Excavation (08E053, 08E055) of the outer relief road revealed Early Bronze Age settlement to the west truncated by medieval cultivation. • DU005-118 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Burnt mound excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E055). A deposit of burnt mound material (8.5m x 13m x 0.4m) sealed a large waterhole, two troughs and two small pits. Charcoal samples of the burnt mound material consisted of ash, oak, wild/bird cherry and willow poplar. Radiocarbon dating of a sample of hawthorn and crab apple charcoal from one of the lower fills of the waterhole returned a calibrated date of 1886-1746 BC placing this activity in the early Bronze Age (McLoughlin 2009a, i).   Description

  One of two structures (see also DU005-119002-) excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E053). This structure consisted of a cluster of fifteen postholes forming a roughly circular plan measuring c. 4.5m x 5m. Radiocarbon dating of charred cereal grain from the posthole fills returned a calibrated date of 997-843 BC indicating a late Bronze Age date for the structure (McLoughlin 2009b, 8).   Description

  One of two structures (see also DU005-119001-) excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E053). This structure consisted of a concentration of seventeen substantial postholes forming a sub-rectangular structure measuring c. 5.5m NW-SE by c. 8.5, SW/NE. A sandstone hammerstone was recovered from the fill of a posthole. Radiocarbon dating of a sample of alder and hazel charcoal from the posthole fills returned a calibrated date of 978-831 BC indicating a late Bronze Age date for the structure (McLoughlin 2009b, 11).   One of two similar structures (see also DU005-120002-) excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E054), interpreted as part of a medieval settlement (c. 420m NW-SE by 180m) linked to the manor of Bremore or Balrothery. Defined by a truncated foundation trench, the remains measured 17.8m by 1.8m in width. Removal of stone collapse revealed an interior metalled surface. Stratified medieval pottery (late 12th – mid-14th century) and intrusive post-medieval pottery recovered. Associated yard and drainage features (Bailey and Kavanagh 2010, 14).   Description

  One of two similar structures (see also DU005-120001-) excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E054), interpreted as part of a medieval settlement (c. 420m NW-SE by 180m) linked to the manor of Bremore or Balrothery. The remains were defined by an irregular foundation trench enclosing an area 6.1m x 5.95m and intersecting dry-stone walls. Cobbling may represent an internal floor. Stratified medieval pottery (late 12th – mid-14th century), two fragments of medieval floor tile and intrusive post-medieval pottery recovered. (Bailey and Kavanagh 2010, 19).   Description

  Excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E054), the T-shaped kiln was interpreted as part of a medieval settlement (c.420m NW-SE by 180m) linked to the manor of Bremore or Balrothery. The kiln consisted of a sub-circular firebowl (1.8m diam.; 0.28m depth) and T-shaped flue (4.35m x 0.42m). Several sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from the fill. Analysis of charred seeds identified the presence of oat, barley, wheat, culm nodes, straw and weeds. Radiocarbon dating of a charred barley grain returned a calibrated date of 1284-1394 AD (Bailey and Kavanagh 2010, 23). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 2 February 2015

  Excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E054), a group of pits were interpreted as representing a small industrial area of unknown date. Seven pits were identified, three of which contained lime mortar, the largest of which (1.4m x 1.1m x 0.6m deep) was lined with stone and designed to be watertight.
