  Description

  On a very gentle S-facing pasture slope on a stud-farm. This possible early monastic site is comprised of a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD011-002001-), a trackway (KD001-002002-), a much altered medieval parish church (KD001-002003-) and a possible graveyard (KD011-004----). • KD011-002001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  Visible on a series of aerial photographs taken in 1963 (CUCAP AHK 11), 1969 (CUCAP AYR 52) and 1970 (CUCAP BDU 45). An inner circular area (est. diam. c. 30m) partially encloses a later medieval parish church (KD011-002003-), and is defined by an arc of low scarp (H 0.4-0.6m) visible at ground level NW-NNE, and which is in turn enclosed by a second, much larger enclosure. This outer, sub-circular enclosure (diams. c. 112m N-S; c. 100m E-W) is defined by a broad, shallow fosse (av. Wth 12.4m; av. D 0.5m) ESE-SW, and elsewhere by a low scarp (H 0.3-1m), except from NW-NNW and from NE-ENE where there is no obvious visible surface trace of an enclosing element.   Description

  Possibly the original access route to/from an early monastic site (KD011-002----) and visible on three aerial photographs (CUCAP AHK 11 (1963); AYR 52 (1969); BDU 45 (1970)). A broad trackway (Wth 6m N-S) is defined along it's N and S sides by a low, intermittent, earthen bank (av. Wth 4m along N; 2.2m along S; H 0.2m) which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.2m) in several places. It is traceable E-W (L 38m) and is truncated at E by the outer enclosure (KD011-002001-) of the possible early monastic site, which suggests that it may predate that enclosure and belong to an earlier phase of the monastery. At it's W end it stops at a modern field boundary and there is no obvious visible surface trace of the monument beyond to the W. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

• KD011-002003 Church
  Description

  According to the OSL (Herity 2002, 3) it was, 'a Church in ruins … now used as a Cowhouse … (which) gave name (sic) to the Parish'. It is located on a possible early monastic site (KD011-002----). This much altered rectangular structure (dims. L 8.6m ENE-WSW; Wth 4.9m; av. wall T 0.8m) is built of small, roughly coursed limestone blocks with undressed quoins and has a small bellcote on the W gable. A partially robbed-out doorway (Wth 1.5m) at the W end of the S wall has externally rebated jambs suggesting that there may have been a porch outside, no trace of which survives. There is a second, blocked-up doorway (Wth 1.15m) opposite, in the N wall, which has a barring-slot hole on its E side. The N and S walls each contain two partially robbed-out windows set in broadly splaying embrasures; the more easterly window in the N wall finished externally with a later looking, Gothic-style arch, as is the centrally placed but blocked-up window in the E gable wall. There is a fine triangular-headed piscine at the E end of the S wall. The internal faces of both gable walls are offset to carry a loft which was lit by a small loop in the W gable. This loop is flanked on either side by two putlock holes and there is a third putlock hole in the E gable. A large, roofless, brick-built, barrel-vaulted, burial-vault, occupies the entire interior below ground level and according to Fitzgerald (1896, 376) belonged to the Bellingham family and its insertion may also account for the other alterations to the building. Fitzgerald (ibid) also states that there was once a burial ground (KD011-002004-) associated with the church. The church is enclosed by a wooden fence at an average distance of 4.5m away and has a row of 'palm' trees planted only 1m outside the walls.   Description

  In 2001, eighteen potential archaeological sites were found during archaeological monitoring (Licence no. 01E0306) of topsoil-stripping on the Celbridge Interchange. The scheme was approximately 4km in length and ran from Celbridge to Leixlip through gently undulating land with a mixture of arable, pasture and woodland. The southern part of the scheme ran through an area heavily influenced by 18th-century landscape design, with avenues, woodland and tree-lined field boundaries centred on the early 18th-century house at Castletown. The site (Site 6) measured 7m by 12m and was visible as seven possible post-holes and a linear feature at monitoring stage. These were identified by charcoal flecks and burnt stone.   Description

  Eighteen potential archaeological sites were found during monitoring of topsoil-stripping on the Celbridge Interchange, from April to December 2001 (Licence no. 01E0306). The scheme was approximately 4km in length and ran from Celbridge to Leixlip through gently undulating land with a mixture of arable, pasture and woodland. The southern part of the scheme runs through an area heavily influenced by 18th-century landscape design, with avenues, woodland and tree-lined field boundaries centred on the early 18th-century house at Castletown. This site (Site 8) measured 9m by 5m. At the monitoring stage it was visible as three pits and one trench or oval pit. Some charcoal and burnt bone were visible on the surface of the fills. A chunk of flint and two pieces of prehistoric pottery were also found. It was resolved under licence number 01E0596 ext.   Eighteen potential archaeological sites were found during monitoring of topsoil-stripping on the Celbridge Interchange, from April to December 2001 (Licence no. 01E0306). The scheme was approximately 4km in length and ran from Celbridge to Leixlip through gently undulating land with a mixture of arable, pasture and woodland. The southern part of the scheme runs through an area heavily influenced by 18th-century landscape design, with avenues, woodland and tree-lined field boundaries centred on the early 18th-century house at Castletown. This site (Site 9), visible in section as a 4m stretch of burnt stone and charcoal, was subsequently resolved under Licence no. 01E0998. The discovery of burnt mound-type material during monitoring suggested that this site was a fulacht fia. No trough or hearth was found in the excavated area but since the site continues to the north this interpretation cannot be discounted. Two large postholes in the west of the site had a structural appearance and may have been part of a larger structure incorporating an L-shaped feature in the east, or may have been a separate structure or fence line. Burnt mound material, a pit and a quernstone suggest that some kind of industrial activity took place on site. Specialist analysis of the soil samples, saddle quern and bone will give further insight into the function and date of this site. This site (Site 1) was excavated under the monitoring licence. It measured 10m by 10m and was identified as a possible fire-pit and post-hole. Seven contexts were identified in total. C5 was a rounded fire-pit with scorching at its base to a depth of 10mm. It was dug into the natural subsoil and filled with a charcoal deposit. No artefacts were found. Most were resolved through subsequent excavation. The scheme was approximately 4km in length and ran from Celbridge to Leixlip through gently undulating land with a mixture of arable, pasture and woodland. The southern part of the scheme runs through an area heavily influenced by 18th-century landscape design, with avenues, woodland and tree-lined field boundaries centred on the early 18th-century house at Castletown. This site (Site 5) was excavated under the monitoring licence. It measured approximately 8m by 11m. Three bowl furnaces and two associated burnt deposits were found. The area was truncated by one of the boundary ditches dividing the deerpark of Castletown and separating Castletown townland from Kilmacredock Upper. Furnace 1 consisted of twelve contexts. It was 0.44m north of the townland boundary that truncated the site. The bowl of the furnace cut through the natural subsoil. It was flat-bottomed and circular with almost vertical sides, 0.47m wide on the surface and 0.39m at its base. It was 0.25m deep. The fills were rich in charcoal and slag. There was evidence that the bowl may have been recut. A 20mm-wide stream of metal was found to have flowed from the base of the furnace on the south-western side for 0.42m. Furnaces 2 and 3 were 9.5m to the south-west of Furnace 1. Furnace 2 joined Furnace 3 on its north-western side; both cut the natural subsoil. Eight contexts were associated with Furnace 2. The bowl was 0.39m in diameter with almost vertical sides and a concave base. Its fills were also rich in charcoal and slag. A possible plume was found in the third fill of the furnace. Nine contexts were associated with Furnace 3. The bowl was 0.4m in diameter on the surface and 0.32m at its base. It was 0.22-0.26m in depth. Its fills were rich in charcoal and slag. The third fill out of four was made up of packed burnt clay which might have been part of the furnace's superstructure. Three features were associated with the furnaces: a stake-hole, an area of burnt material and a shallow cut with burnt material, C37. No completed artefacts or metalworking tools were found on site. More research will have to be carried out to determine whether the furnaces were for smithing or smelting. It might be suggested that they were for smelting since there was a possible plume in Furnace 2 and no crucibles or moulds were found. The pit C37 may have been used for roasting ore prior to smelting. Since there were three furnaces, both smithing and smelting may have been carried out on site.
