  Description

  On slight rise, in gently undulating pasture. Circular area (35m N-S; 33.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.15m; ext. H 1.45m) with external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.65m) WNW->E, and defined by scarped edge (H 0.8m; Wth 8m) E->WNW. Bank is covered by dense overgrowth and organic debris has been dumped against its outer face. Fosse is heavily poached by cattle. Field boundary overlies bank WNW->E. Interior, under pasture, slopes gently down to SE. According to report (McMahon & Rynne) bank levelled E->WNW to present condition by mechanical excavator in 1985.   On gentle rise, in undulating marshy pasture. Circular area (17.5m N-S; 17.5m E-W) enclosed by earth-and-stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.75m) ESE->WSW, and defined by scarped edge (H 0.5m; Wth 1.5m) WSW->ESE. Gap (Wth 2.5m) in bank at S has been eroded by cattle accessing interior. External fosse (Wth 1.5m; D 0.2m) evident WSW->N.   Description

  Church of Ireland church built on site of medieval church of Kilscannell. Described in 1840 as the 'site of the ancient church is now occupied by a small modern Protestant one, and there is nothing of interest to the antiquarian in the church yard' (OSL,. 48). Westropp (1904-5, 400) recorded the following details on Kilscannell; ‘Killscanneil, 1201. Quit claim to Kilscanylle by Ade Palmifer, 1280 (B.B.L., lxix.). Nicholas O'Cathbuoyg, the unlawful occupant, ordered to assign the perpetual vicarage of Kylscanyll to Gilla-Seanayn Ohalphy, dispensed, though the son of a priest. It was void, because Ric. Burchs held it a year, without ordination, 1396 ("Cal. Papal Letters," iv., p. 530). Kilscanyll, 1302; Kystannyl, 1418; Kiskannell, ruinous, 1615 b. Site - The ruined I.C. church was built on the old site, 1822'. 19th century Church of Ireland church ruins described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as a 'Freestanding Board of First Fruits Church of Ireland church, built in 1822, comprising three-stage square-profile tower, flanked to north and south by single-storey single-bay porches, adjoining west elevation of gabled three-bay double-height nave' (www.buildingsofireland.ie; Reg. • LI028-189 Burial
  Description

  Discovery of burials at Kilscannell were described by Cahill and Sikora (2011 vol. 2, 493-4) as following; 'In 1953 Mr Robert Cussen, Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick, reported that human remains had been found in the spring of that year in a sand quarry at Kilscannell, a few fields away from the ruins of Kilscannell church [LI028-114001-] and churchyard [LI028-114002-]. According to the report, the sandpit was an elevated portion of ground in the corner of a field. The coordinates given locate the site to the south-east of the church, and the first edition of the OS 6in. sheet shows a large quarry at this location. A number of skeletons were found about 0.3—0.4m below the sod. The bones were in an advanced state of decomposition and skulls of various sizes, from large to small, were noted. Over the following months more skeletons were uncovered. These are reported to have been aligned east/west, with the heads to the west and 'a few common stones arranged where the feet were, forming a sort of little wall'. Two objects, a fork and an iron object, were sent to the Museum for examination. G.A. Hayes-McCoy reported that the iron object was most likely an axehead or a halberd, and commented that a halberd seemed more likely. He also stated that 'halberds with blades of this shape were used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries', but the identification was tentative. Catríona McCloud described the fork as belonging to the series of 'ginger forks' that came into use in the late seventeenth century, continuing in use into the eighteenth century. It had a bone handle. The halberd blade was retained by the NMI. The report does not specify the relationship between these objects and the burials but it is clear that they were found at the site. Mr D.M. Davies examined one skull from the site, which he identified as the cranium and mandible of a woman aged 35-40 with the head keeled, a high bridge to the nose, a fine forehead and large orbits'.
