• WM024-093 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped tree-planted area (dims. 30.3m N-S; 24.3m E-W) enclosed by a bank, with intervening fosse and an external bank with a gap (Wth at top 6.3m; basal Wth 2.3m) in the inner bank and a gap (Wth at top 7.6m; basal Wth 5m) in the outer bank at N which may represent the entrance. The inner bank is steep and is almost reduced to a scarp, large portions have been dug away at SE and WNW. There are the remains of a slight fosse and of an external earthen bank. A modern roadside wall which forms the townland boundary with Taghnafearagh skirts the bank from SSE-S-SW, where the fosse and outer bank are not visible. The interior has a gentle NNE-facing slope.   Description

  Situated on a gentle rise, in pasture, with wide views of the surrounding landscape. Monument described in 1979 as a roughly circular-shaped area enclosed by a scarp and a wall. The earthen scarp is present from NE-E-S and a ruined wall is visible from SW-W-N. There is an entrance at NW. The interior is largely occupied by a long house site (WM024-109001-). There is an area of collapsed stones immediately inside the perimeter wall at N, which may represent another structure. Old field banks form a number of small enclosures outside to E. Occupying the greater portion of the interior of a ringfort (WM024-109----) is a long rectangular-shaped house site which is subdivided into three separate compartments.   Description

  Situated on a gentle rise, in pasture, with wide views of the surrounding landscape. Immediately W of ringfort (WM024-109----) is a large, roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 55m) enclosed by a low bank with a house site (WM024-109003-) located in the centre. A second possible house site (WM024-109004-) adjoins the ringfort bank at WSW. There is another rectangular-shaped structure, possibly a house site (WM024-109005-) immediately outside the ringfort bank at E. Old field fences encroach on the site at S, W and N.   In 1612 Thomas Petyt [Petit] of Irishtown was granted 'a water-mill' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 234) in the townland of Ballynkiny [Ballinkeeny]. The precise location of this watermill within the townland of Ballinkeeny has not been identified. Mosstown Mill may have been built on site of medieval mill.
