  Description

  Situated on a low rise with a steep drop on the N side. Part of the medieval borough of Newcastle (WI019-005----) this foundation was granted to the convent of Grace Dieu by John Comyn, Archbishop of Dublin (1181-1212) but nothing now survives of the medieval establishment. The present structure is a late 18th or early 19th-century Church of Ireland parish church (Bradley and King 1989, 65) which may be on the site of the earlier church. The triangular graveyard (WI019-005006-), defined by a modern wall and bordered by the public road at the W and N contains a large number of early 18th-century headstones. The base of one 17th-century headstone (..ST...TH...20TH...1699) lies at the E end of the church. • WI019-005002 Castle - Anglo-Norman masonry castle
  Description

  Situated at the W end of a possible ringwork (WI019-005004-) in undulating terrain; the site formed part of the medieval borough of Newcastle (WI019-005----). The remains of a four-storey rectangular gatehouse built of uncoursed rubble with traces of internal plaster. The core of the building is medieval but was considerably altered in post-medieval times. On the W façade above the entrance are three niches with concave limestone frames, probably for armorial plaques. This entrance leads into an E-W barrel-vaulted room with opposing doorways to the left and right (with chamfered granite portals and arches) giving access to narrower vaulted chambers to the N and S. A smaller N-S chamber extends from the NE angle of the building and appears to have been largely subterranean. A linear stairwell rises from the N wall of the main ground-floor chamber leading to a room set between the ground and first-floor levels. This has a large fireplace towards the NW angle. In the E end of the N wall is a window ope with a floor-level chute below. The main first-floor chamber (dims. 6m E-W; 5.5m N-S) is supported by the entrance vault. It has two opposing windows in the E and W walls and a brick fireplace in the SE angle. No partition between this and the previous room survives, nor does the original means of access. Access to a S chamber at this level was via a doorway in the W end of the S wall. Niches immediately above the window level were used to carry the floor supports of the second floor. This second floor is also divided by the wall on the S side from another room to the S. • WI019-005004 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  Situated at the W end of an E-W ridge and forming part of the medieval borough of Newcastle (WI019-005----). Earliest references to the castle formerly known as Newcastle McKynegan date to c. 1210-13 (Orpen 1908, 129). Circular level platform (summit dims. 63m E-W; 62m N-S; max. base dims. 102m E-W; 88m N-S) fashioned from a natural ridge and defined by a steep scarp. There are very slight traces of an earthen bank (Wth 3-4m; max. H 0.3m) around the W, N and E edges of the platform. At the E there is a wide fosse (Wth 5m; D 1m) at the foot of the platform scarp which cuts the site off from the rest of the ridge on which it sits. The base of the fosse is 4m below the platform and less than 1m below the external ground level at the E. To the N and S the fosse levels out into a narrow terrace (Wth 5m at the S; 2-5m at the N; Wth of fosse 5-6m at the W). At the W end of the platform are the remains of an Anglo-Norman stone castle/gatehouse (WI019-005002-) which gives access to the interior of the ringwork in a similar manner to the castle earthwork at Castle Kevin (WI024-003001-). A causeway (Wth 5m) occurs directly opposite the entrance to the castle and 10m to the W of it. A possibly cobbled approach to the stone castle fans out towards the castle angles from the causeway, edged with a setting of small stones. (CUCAP, BDE 17) The cropmark of a semi-circular shaped ditch can be seen on aerial photographs which could be the remains of an outer bailey (www.bingmaps.com) (SMR file). • WI019-075 Habitation site
  Description

  Archaeological features were revealed in the townland of Newcastle Middle during the stripping of topsoil for the Hollybrook–Wicklow Bord Gáis Éireann pipeline in June 2001. The monitoring of topsoil-stripping and the subsequent excavation revealed a series of archaeological features stretching over approximately 120m of the pipeline route. The Newcastle Middle site was on level ground overlooking the village of Newcastle, which is 1km to the east, and the Irish Sea some 1.5–2km beyond that. The ground falls to north and east and rises to the hills in the west. The main concentration of archaeological features, Area 1, comprised a series of pits and linear features in an area measuring 15m north–south by 12m. Some three deep pits were excavated within this area. These pits, which formed no obvious structural plan, were generally 0.5m wide with depths of 0.5–0.6m. The fills were all dark brown silts with occasional charcoal flecking. The upper fill of one of the pits contained abundant quantities of charcoal. Analysis of this revealed the presence of some ten species. Hazel and elm were dominant, but alder and ash were also common. Three additional features were located in the north-west quadrant of Area 1. A subcircular hearth, which measured 0.8m north–south by 0.7m with a depth of 0.12m, was excavated. This feature exhibited evidence of in situ burning on its eastern side, where the natural subsoil into which it had been cut was burnt to a dark purple red colour. Its fill was a friable, dry black silt. Some 3m to the north-west of the hearth, excavation revealed an irregular, kidney-shaped pit, which measured 0.8m north-west/south-east by 0.68m with a depth of 0.12m. Its single fill was a dark brown to black sandy clay. Approximately 0.6m north-west of the latter feature, another pit was located. This was oval in plan, irregularly shaped in profile, with shallow breaks of slope and a flat base, and measured 0.4m north-west/south-east by 0.28m, with a depth of 0.06m. The single fill was a moderately compact brown to black sandy clay. Two narrow ditches were revealed running across the southern half of Area 1, 2.5–1m apart. Although the relationship between them is unclear, their orientations suggest that they intersect to the east of the pipeline way-leave. The northernmost measured 12.9m east–west as exposed, with a width of 0.4–1.08m and a depth range of 0.09–0.47m. It contained some five silty charcoal-flecked fills. The southern ditch measured 9.14m east–west as exposed and 0.7–1.3m in width, with a depth range of 0.14–0.42m. It contained two fills, consisting of dark brown silty clays with frequent charcoal flecking. Three small driven post-holes and one stake-hole were all truncated by this linear ditch. Several apparently isolated features were found in the pipeline corridor close to Area 1. Approximately 20m to the north of Area 1, a single kidney-shaped pit was revealed and excavated. Two isolated (driven) post-holes were also found and excavated some 57m south of Area 1. Approximately 77m south of Area 1 a cremation pit was excavated. This measured 0.6–0.62m in diameter, with a maximum depth of 0.2m, and contained three fills. The uppermost of these was composed of redeposited natural subsoil. Beneath the upper sealing layer was the main cremation fill, a dry, moderately compact black charcoal lens with frequent inclusions of small, fragmented pieces of cremated bone. The basal fill was more disturbed natural subsoil. At a distance of 100m to the south of the main area of excavation, Area 1, a single post-hole was found in association with a shallow pit. The post-hole, which was irregular in plan, measured 0.83m by 0.62m, with a maximum depth of 0.22m. A fragment of badly worn, and otherwise unidentifiable, prehistoric pottery was retrieved from the fill of this feature. The second shallow pit, some 1.5m to the south-west, has tentatively been interpreted as a small hearth. Irregular in plan, it measured 1m by 0.6m, with a depth of 0.25m, and contained two fills. Flint-working debris was found within and around both features. The features detected at Newcastle Middle were all confined to a 20m-wide corridor, and their wider association and integrity remains unclear. The material must indicate a considerable area of prehistoric archaeological importance in the immediate area (Bennett 2003, 426-7). Date of upload: 01 October 2012

  Description

  A Geophysical Survey (Detection Device Licence no. 22R0231) was carried out in relation to Wicklow County Council Planning Ref. 22/544 regarding a proposed residential development in Newcastle, Co. Wicklow. The survey revealed two previously unidentified monuments in level pasture, both clearly defined and interpreted as ring ditches, located c. 20m apart. Their existence was subsequently confirmed during archaeological test trenching (Excavation Licence no. 22E0502). The larger ringditch (WI019-081----) was a circular area (int. diam. c. 10m) enclosed by a ditch (av. Wth 1.7m; av. D 0.82m) and is to be preserved in situ. The smaller one (WI019-082----) lies c. 20m to the NE and is also circular (int. diam. c. 5m; ext. dia. c. 7m) and has a possible entrance at east-southeast. It is to be preserved by record.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house with shop, built c.1870 and extensively renovated c.2002. The façade is finished in unpainted lined render with decorative painted moulded quoins and simple moulded surrounds to openings. The overhanging gable-ended pitched roof is slated and has rendered chimneystacks with corbelling. The entrance consists of a panelled timber door with segmental-headed fanlight. To the north side is a projecting timber replacement shopfront of c.2002 with flat roof, pronounced cornice course and a recessed partly glazed timber door flanked by plain glazed shop windows. The windows to the house are flat-headed and have timber sash frames, two over two. uPVC rainwater goods.

  Semi-detached two-bay single-storey former estate worker's house, built c.1845. The façade is finished in painted roughcast but is now largely covered in ivy growth. The pitched gable-ended overhanging roof is slated and has a rendered chimneystack with pronounced base course and cornice course. The entrance is to the south gable. The flat-headed windows have been enlarged and have c.1950s metal frames. To front there is a small garden enclosed by a low rendered wall.

The façade is finished in painted render, whilst the pitched gable-ended overhanging roof is covered in artificial slate and has a rendered chimneystack with pronounced base course and cornice course. The entrance is located within a gable-ended porch and consists of a timber stable door. The windows are flat-headed and have replacement frames with top-hung openers and painted stone sills. To the rear there is a one and a half-storey return with lean-to conservatory of c.1990. To front there is a small garden enclosed by a low rendered wall.

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1865, but probably around the fabric of an earlier pre 1840 building. The façade is finished in painted ‘Tyrolean’ render whilst the gable-ended pitched roof is slated and has rendered chimneystacks. The entrance is located within a projecting canted hipped roof, mainly glazed porch and consists of a timber door with decorative glazing, fanlight and sidelights. The porch may be an Edwardian addition. Attached to either side of the porch are small single-storey canted bays with slated hipped roofs. The windows are flat-headed with timber sash frames, one over one, two over two and six over six, and granite sills. Large collection of outbuildings to the north side of the house. Gravel forecourt to the east front.

• Millbrook House, house, 1790–1810 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1800, with single-storey lean-to extension to south elevation of c.1900 and rear full-height lean-to extension of c.1950. The façade is finished in unpainted roughcast, whilst the hipped roof is slated and has rendered chimneystacks. The entrance is set within an elliptical-headed recess and consists of a panelled timber double door encased with fluted Tuscan columns supporting an entablature, with a plain elliptical-arched fanlight above. The entrance is reached via a short flight of granite steps. The windows are flat-headed with timber sash frames, six over six and three over three, and granite sills. To rear there is a full-height lean-to extension of c.1950 with broader flat-headed windows with c.1970s timber frames. Large single-storey lean-to to the south elevation. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Outbuildings to west and south.

• Newcastle Church (Newcastle Lower), church/chapel, 1780–1790 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey Board of First Fruits Church of Ireland church, built 1783-8, with three-stage reducing tower (1821) and later chancel (1856). The church is roughly rectangular in plan with the tower to the east, shallow gable-ended single-bay transepts to both north and south, a two-bay gabled chancel to the west, and a single-bay lean-to vestry to the south side of the chancel. To the south face of the tower is a small lean-to section. This lean-to, the chancel and vestry do not appear to be original. The façade is in uncoursed rubble with granite quoins and dressings. The ground floor stage of the south elevation of the tower is finished in a render made to look like coursed stone, as is the east elevation of the small lean-to. The pitched roofs of the nave, transepts, chancel and vestry are slated and have stone parapets. The entrance is located on the tower and consists of a relatively narrow opening with granite Gibbsian surround, within which is a replacement door of c.1990 with moulded bronze pictorial panels, with another pointed arch panel above the door. The windows have pointed arch heads, with timber double lancet frames and leaded lattice panes to the nave and transept windows, and stone tracery to the chancel and vestry windows. The tower has a small clock face and large pointed arch louvered windows to its second floor stage, and is topped with a crenellated parapet with tall corner pinnacles. There is a small graveyard to the north and south sides of the church, with rubble retaining wall to the roadside to the north and west. There are gateways to the west and to the east, both with cast-iron gates, square rendered piers and granite steps.

• Newcastle Church (Newcastle Lower), sexton's house, 1820–1840 · Regional interest

  Detached three-bay single-storey sexton's house, built c.1830 to serve nearby Newcastle Church. The façade is finished in unpainted roughcast, whilst the gable-ended pitched roof is covered in artificial slate and has a centrally positioned rendered chimneystack. The entrance consists of a timber door set within a pointed arch opening, which itself is set directly beneath a small gable with decorative bargeboards. The windows are flat-headed with lattice-paned timber casement frames. The windows to the south elevation appear to be c.1980s insertions and have timber frames with top-hung openers. uPVC rainwater goods. To front is a small garden enclosed by a low rubble wall, with a gateway with wrought-iron gate and square, pyramidal-capped piers.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1780, with entrance porch of c.1920. The façade is finished in painted render whilst the hipped roof is slated and has rendered chimneystacks. The entrance is located within a mainly glazed gable-ended porch with tiled pitched roof, plain bargeboards and finial. The windows are flat-headed and have three over six and six over six timber sash frames and painted stone sills.
