• CL045-033001 Bridge
  Description

  A nineteenth-century bridge over the Shannon which probably had its origins in the seventeenth century and has been greatly altered since. The Urban Survey of Killaloe (Bradley et. al. 1988, 96-7) refer to an early plank bridge at this location which was utilised during Brian Boru's lifetime (pre-1014). They also refer to a 'droichet' built by Toirdelbach Ua Briain in 1071 (ibid.). According to an entry in the Annals of Innisfallen in 1071 a bridge, presumably wooden, was built at Killaloe in a fortnight (Simington and O'Keeffe 1991, 59). In 1599 Hugh O Donnell destroyed the bridge at Killaloe (Bradley et. al. 1988, 96-7). Clearly it had not been replaced by the mid-seventeenth century for it is not referred to in a diary of a Parliamentary officer though the ford there is referenced (Gilbert 1879-80, iii, 227, 235). It must have been replaced shortly after as it described in the Civil Survey of 1654-6 as a bridge crossing the river of Shannon to Killaloe (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 163). This may have been a temporary structure as it is not depicted on Moll's map of 1714 which shows a ferry crossing at the site. The bridge is drawn on Taylor and Skinner's map of 1778. The bridge (as described in a plan of 1837) consisted of fifteen segmental arches with an average width 20ft (6m), though five at the centre of the bridge are 40ft (12m) wide. The roadway was 18ft (5.5m) wide between the stone parapet walls. There were triangular cutwaters fore and aft coped with semi-pyramidal cappings, except for eleven that were brought up to parapet level to form pedestrian refuges. • CL045-033003 Church
  Description

  Situated c. 20m N of St Flannan’s cathedral (CL045-033006-) and c. 1.5m below the present ground level of the churchyard. A stone-roofed Romanesque oratory built c. AD 1100 under the patronage of king Muirchertach Ua Briain (1086-1119) (Gem 2006, 74). Several possible functions have been suggested such as a shrine for important relics (taking the fireproof nature of the stone roof into consideration), a possible place for royal burial or a subsidiary church to the main cathedral (ibid. 90-94). The oratory comprises a rectangular barrel-vaulted nave (int. dims. c. 8.8m x 5.3m) to the E of which was a contemporary chancel, which is now missing. The walls are of roughly rectangular blocks of mortared yellow and brown sandstone set on a simple plinth (H 0.2m) with larger stones used for the quoins. The N and S walls have a pronounced batter. The stone roof is neatly built and has been repaired (19th-century drawings show the roof disrupted by plant growth). A chamber with a pointed barrel vault above the nave carries the apex of the stone roof. The chancel also had a masonry vault and an outer masonry roof with a chamber in between. The chancel arch (Wth 2m; H 3m) is plain with a projecting chamfered abacus under the arch. The nave was lit by only two plain narrow lights with inclined jambs and stepped sills, one in each side wall towards the E end. The heads of the windows are formed of two slabs leaned together. The upper chamber is lit by a window in each gable wall of neat ashlar construction. The E gable window has inclined jambs with its head formed of two inclined slabs while the W window is round-headed. The W doorway (Wth 1m; H 2.5m) is highly decorative, well constructed and is integral to the original building. Externally the doorway is of three orders. The inner order is plain; the middle order is supported by short round columns standing on modern bases and has worn capitals which are decorated with animal and foliate carvings. The arch has a round roll moulding with a double hollow behind. The outer order has plain jambs. The arch is composed of two roll mouldings with a hollow moulding between. Externally there is a roll hood-moulding with very worn traces of dentil decoration. A cross-slab (CL045-033004-) lies in the interior. St Flannan’s Oratory is a National Monument in State care, no. 6.   Description

  Attached to the internal N wall of St Flannan’s Oratory (CL045-033003-). Two irregularly shaped fragments of a yellow sandstone cross-slab, discovered at St. Flannan’s well (CL045-033013-) in 1934. The upper fragment (H 0.67m; Wth 0.49m; T 0.1m) has the head of a double-lined incised wheeled cross with a squared centre and expanded rectangular terminals. The lower fragment (H 0.56m; Wth 0.45m; T 0.08-0.09m) has an incised double-lined tapering shaft and a tenon at the base. • CL045-033009 Cross - High cross (present location)
  Description

  Erected in the nave of Killaloe cathedral (CL045-033002-). This high cross (H 4.2m; Wth across arms just over 1m) was, according to Swinfen (1992, 43), originally located in the same field as the West cross (CL016-015005-) at Kilfenora (see CL016-015014-) and was moved to Killaloe in 1821 by Dr. Mant, Bishop of Killaloe. The bottom of the tapering shaft is 0.46m wide and 0.14m deep. It has an imperforate head and lacks any mouldings at the corners. According to Harbison (1992, 120) the head of the E face ‘is dominated by the figure of the crucified Christ with outstretched arms, clad in a long and slightly splaying robe to above the ankles. Above and below Christ’s right arm there is a knot of pointed single-strand interlace. The interlace above his left arm is similar, but double-stranded. Under his left arm, four animal-heads emerge from a whirl. Above Christ’s head there is a simple, single-strand interlace.’ At the top of the shaft, which is otherwise undecorated, is a square panel of fretwork. Halfway up the shaft a tablet has been inserted and bears the following inscription: QVAM.SPECTAS.CRVCEM/IN.AGRO.FENABORENSI.VETVSTATE,COLLAPSAM/NE.PENITVS.INCVRIA.SITV.QVE.ABOLESCERET/HIC./APVUD SEDEM LAONENSEM/ERIGI.CVRAVIT/ANTIQVITATIS.ECCLESIASTICAE.STVDIOSUS/R.M.S.T.P./VTRIVSQUE.DIOECESEOS.EPISCOPUS/A.D. MDCCC.XXI The other face has interlace starting near the top of the shaft and covering the arms and top of the cross, but the segments of the ring seem to be undecorated.   Description

  This cross-inscribed ogham stone was 'discovered in 1916, built into the wall surrounding the cathedral [at Killaloe (CL045-033006-)] enclosure: now set up on a supporting stone inside the building' (0.89 x 0.46 x 0.2m converted from Macalister 1945, 58-9, no. 54). 'A runic inscription is inscribed on the face reading [TH]URGRIM RISTI [KR]US THINA 'Thorgrim raised this cross' and is accompanied by a damaged scholastic Ogham inscribed on the side reading BENDACHT ... TOROQR ... which can be restored with reasonable certainty as BENDACHT FOR TOROQRIM 'a blessing on T[horgrim]' (McManus 1991, 130). McManus dates this inscription to the period after the seventh century on the grounds that the oghams are scholastic. According to Harbison (1992, fig. 402) this may be part of the shaft of a high cross. It is evident that the higher portion has been broken off. The back of the stone bears an unusual carving possibly of a crucifixion scene with portion of a second panel remaining above. Thorgrím Furcap came to Killaloe in the winter of 1102/1103 when he accompanied Magnús Barelegs, King of Norway who arrived in Killaloe in 1102 (Griffin 2019, 238-9).
