- CL033-085 Settlement deserted - medieval
Description
In the vicinity of Clonroad castle (CL033-085001-). The account of a raid on Clonroad castle in 1553 makes it clear that there was a substantial settlement associated with the castle and by 1703 Moland could still record ‘a few shops’ and the holding of two annual fairs there (Ó Dálaigh 1987, 16; Bradley, Halpin and King 1988, 80). Description
On low-lying ground on the S bank of the River Fergus. The main residence of the O’Brien kings of Thomond from the 13th to the 16th centuries began with an earthen stronghold (CL033-085006-) built by Conchobar Ó Briain c. AD 1267. An earlier earthen fortification (CL033-085005-) had been built on the N bank of the river in AD c. 1210 by Donnachad Cairprech Ó Briain. A tower house was built on the site probably c. 1470 (Ó Dálaigh 1987, 28) and by 1558 a large mansion (CL033-085002-) had been attached. The castle was besieged in 1600 and there is a record of the ‘great ould house’ being covered with slate or shingle in 1658. A sketch by Thomas Dineley in 1681 shows a large residence with a tower house, a six-bay mansion and a bawn surrounded by a curtain wall with an arched opening defended by a machicolation. No remains are visible on the ground although remnants were noted in the OS Letters in 1839 as being ‘indistinctly traceable’. Two adjacent bridges across the river (CL033-085003- and CL033-085004-) are known from the same 1681 sketch. A stone causeway linked the castle to the Franciscan Friary (CL033-082001-) 1km to the W in the centre of the town. In the 19th century a brewery and ‘Clonroad House’ were built on part of the same site. - CL033-085002 House - 16th/17th century
Description
A large mansion known as ‘caisléan caoimh gheal’ or ‘white castle’ was built on to the earlier tower house (CL033-085001-) at Clonroad, Ennis, between 1551 and 1558. The castle was besieged in 1600 and there is a record of the ‘great ould house’ being covered with slate or shingle in 1658. A sketch by Thomas Dineley in 1681 shows a large residence with a tower house, a six-bay mansion and a bawn surrounded by a curtain wall with an arched opening defended by a machicolation. Two adjacent bridges across the river (CL033-085003- and CL033-085004-) are also clearly visible in the sketch. A brewery and ‘Clonroad House’ were built on part of the site in the 19th century. Description
One of two stone bridges depicted on a 17th-century drawing by Thomas Dineley (1681) across the river Fergus immediately N of Clonroad Castle (CL033-084001-). In the drawing, this more westerly bridge linked the arched entrance to the bawn with the N side of the river. It was built at an existing fording point, facilitated by a shelf of flat limestone outcrop that provided a firm footing. This still exists under the modern bridge. Description
The more easterly of two bridges depicted on a 17th-century drawing by Thomas Dineley (1681) across the river Fergus immediately adjacent to Clonroad Castle (CL033-084001-). In the drawing the bridge is of stone with four arches linking the castle with further settlement on the N bank. The location has been plotted in relation to what is shown on the drawing. Description
