• CL041-040 House - 18th/19th century
  Description

  Situated on a N-S ridge. Listed in the RMP (1996) as ‘House, 17th-century, possible’. On inspection in 2000 it was found to be most likely an early 19th-century house, abandoned and obscured by briars and brambles. A three-bay, one and a half storey house with chimneys at each gable. It faces SE and has lean-to extensions at NW and SE. The doorway could not be made out. There are two half-storey windows, one on the NW face and one on the SE face at opposite ends of the building possibly indicating the presence of two lofts.   Description

  Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996) on the basis of hachuring on the 1922 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and a reference to a levelled fort in this area (Westropp 1917, 5). The fort in question is in fact CL041-166----. The hachuring is on the 25-inch OS map and is named ‘Gravel pit – disused’. On inspection in 2000 a slight hollow from an old quarry was visible.
