- CO112-098 Military camp
Description
On an E-W ridge, to the S of Ballinacurra Creek and overlooking the historic town of Kinsale (CO112-034001-) to the S. This location has been identified as the Earl of Thomond's second camp which was one of three principal fortified encampments occupied by the Crown forces during the Siege and Battle of Kinsale in AD 1601 (see Shiels 2004, Morgan 2007). The Earl of Thomond had first entrenched his forces on the W end of the Ardmartin ridge, on a height known as Liscahane More (CO112-102----). In early December, Lord Deputy Mountjoy wished to tighten his encirclement of the town and so 'it was resolved…that the Quarter or lesser Camp on the west side (Thomond's first camp)…should rise and sit down farther off, towards the South-gate' (Moryson 1735, vol. 2, 23). From the depiction of the camp on the contemporary painting of the Battle of Kinsale, now housed in Trinity College Dublin, it is clear that it was situated on the W side of the Innishannon road, to the E of an enclosure (CO112-032002-) which is also depicted on the painting. Investigations by O'Neill (1940, 113) at Rathbeg in 1940 identified 'a slight hollow lying east and west in the middle of a field on the west side of the Innishannon road a short distance south of Annmount'. There is no longer any visible trace of the encampment at this location. A licensed metal detection survey (licence no: 06E0722) was carried out in 2006 on a narrow strip of rough ground to the W of the 19th-century Annmount House. This recovered three pieces of lead shot which were intended for use in a 16th-century weapon known as a caliver. A recent residential development has removed a large portion of the monument but it is likely that sub-surface archaeological traces of the defensive ditches, ramparts and internal structures still survive on the crest and slopes of the ridge. (pers. comm. Paul O'Keeffe) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
