• CO074-028001 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  St. Francis' Well lies at foot of rock cliff, to rear of houses on North Mall, within stone-built well house. Entrance has wooden panel with date of 1688 in iron numbers; second room to W partially cut out of rock. Fitzgerald, in 1896 (O Coindealbháin 1946, 161), describes well (diam. 5ft; D 2ft) as surrounded by path leading to crypt-like room with rock forming end wall; used as cure for sore eyes, consumption and other ailments. • CO074-028002 Religious house - Franciscan friars
  Description

  Foundation date uncertain; Annals of Four Masters record foundation of 'monastery of St. Francis at Cork' by Diarmait MacCarthaig in 1229 (Bradley et al. 1985, 87). Extent of friary cleary outlined in confirmation grant by Philip Prendergast c. 1300 as land between burgesses of Shandon (possibly Shandon Street) and holy well (CO074-074---), and between rock cliff to N and River Lee to S. Hardiman map (c. 1601) and Philips' map (1685) show church located on N bank of river near bend in Lee where St. Vincent's Bridge (foot bridge) now stands. New church built in 1700, but not where former stood. Burials found during construction of houses on North Mall, in 1804; fragment of double ogee-headed window surround built into wall at Wise's Hill.   Description

  There is a reference in 1183 to an 'old castle' in Shandon near the stream, flowing from mill of St. Nessan to the west of North Gate Bridge (CO074-030002-) (Bradley et al. 1985, 96).   Description

  On E side of Shandon Street and c. 60m N of river Lee. Roughly rectangular grass-covered area (c. 60m E-W; c. 25m N-S) enclosed by stone wall; now used as childrens playground. No visible surface trace of C of I church, St. Mary's Shandon, built in 1693 (Brady 1863, vol. 1, 283), and 'taken down' in 1879 (O'Shea 1943, 32).   Description

  Site of St Mary's church, in graveyard (CO074-03101-) at foot of Shandon Street. Built in 1696 (Brady 1863, 283) in place of earlier church of StMary's Shandon (see CO074-03301-), at top of Shandon Hill. Taken down in 1879 when present St. Mary's Shandon, situated in Sunday's Well, was consecrated (O'Shea 1943, 32). St. Anne's Shandon (CO074-03303-) now houses various monuments from St. Mary's. • CO074-032 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Known as Shandon Castle; mentioned in Barry's 1531 grant and named 'Ye L. Barris Castell' on Pacata Hibernia map (c. 1585-1600); in ruins by 1581 but apparently refurbished/rebuilt shortly afterwards (Bradley et al. 1985,96). Hardiman (c. 1601), Philips (1685) and Storey's (c. 1690) maps locate castle near where the Old Butter Market now stands. Maps show castle was of Z-plan, with main rectangular block running E-W and projecting towers at NW and SE ends (ibid). No visible surface trace. • CO074-033001 Graveyard
  Description

  Irregular graveyard to N and E of St. Anne's C of I church, Shandon (CO074-03303-). Enclosed by high stone wall, with Skiddy's Almshouses (CO074-105---) forming SE corner, railing to S; now public park. Headstones placed horizontally along base of W wall of graveyard, N wall and E gable of church; vault to Waters family inside eastern gate; some chest tombs and pyramidal grave markers remain; line of graves, consisting of two chest tombs, outside E wall of graveyard, enclosed by railings. Inscribed headstones date from 1703. Site of earlier church of St. Mary's Shandon, shown on Phillips map (1685) 'as a long rectangular structure with three transepts of annexes, two on the southside and one on the north' (Bradley et al. 1985, 70). Demolished during siege of 1690 and replaced by St. Mary's (CO074-03102-), lower down hill, in 1693. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Description

  To SE of St. Anne's C of I church (CO074-033003-) and on W side of former North Infirmary Hospital. Roughly rectangular graveyard (c. 46m N-S; c. 55m E-W), enclosed by high stone wall to E, S and W; low stone wall topped by railings to N. No longer in use. Line of 19th century inscribed headstones placed upright along E and W walls. Chest tombs in original positions, dating from 1796; also some pyramidal gravemarkers remain. • CO074-033003 Church
  Description

  In graveyard (CO074-03301-) on Shandon hill. Built in 1722 on site of earlier church, St. Mary's Shandon, which was demolished during siege of 1690 (O'Shea 1943, 32). Described by Craig (1982, 207) as 'simple rectangle with shallow sanctuary and a West tower'. Tower 'unusually massive and graceful, diminishing by two offsets between three stages, though with four openings on the West face' (ibid). Tower and church faced with limestone ashlar to W and S and red sandstone to N and E. Tower heightened c. 1749 by 'addition of three more diminishing stages, more elaborately finished and culminating in a small stone dome' (ibid), all of limestone and surmounted by 'a golden sphere and a large golden weather vane in the form of a salmon' (ibid). 'The clock in the church tower has four dials, each fourteen feet in diameter and was erected in 1847' (O'Shea 1943, 34). The famous Shandon bells, 'eight in number, were cast by Abel Rudhall, of Gloucester, and were set up in 1750' (ibid). Still in use as C of I church.
