  Description

  Built in depression. Random-rubble sandstone front wall retains earthen core, side wall collapsed. Front wall (H 3.2m; Wth c. 7m) faces S; arched recess (H 1.2m; Wth 3.1m; D c. 3m) with small holes along top of side walls to support centring of arch, sloping slabs at rear with ope at base. Partially infilled limestone-lined funnel (diam. 2.5m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Description

  Two-storey T-plan house, c. 100m W of Leitrim Castle (14333). Main body of house rectangular in plan (15.65m NW-SE; 6.2 NE-SW; wall thickness 0.73m) (see photographs Grove White 1905-25, vol. 4, opp. 14, opp. 15). Entrance front (NE) visible only at SE end, with tripartite 1st-floor casement window. Rest of elevation masked behind double-gable-ended addition extending to NE, built in early 1900s. Gable-ended, with large projecting chimney stacks (Wth at base 3.13m) from both gables; NW gable end has attic windows and small ground-floor window (blocked). One-storey outbuildings project from SE gable. Rear of main body of house has large tripartite casement windows at NW end, simple rectangular door ope and sash windows at SE end; central wide gabled projection (4.2m NE-SW; 5.9m NW-SE), accommodating stairs with pantry at ground-floor level. Steeply pitched slate roof, with slightly off-centre chimney, (formerly thatched according to owner). According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 4, 15) house built c. 1680; front section with projecting stacks could be of this date. • CO028-027 Castle - Anglo-Norman masonry castle
  Description

  In level pasture, at base of steep S-facing slope. Rectangular area (c. 34.5m N-S; c. 36m E-W) enclosed by ivy-covered curtain walls (T 1.6m; H c. 4m). Remains of rectangular corner tower (int. 4m E-W) at SW corner, of which only W wall (L 7.5m) and S wall (L c. 7m) now stand; connection of these to curtain walls collapsed, but walls of tower project in front of curtain walls c. 0.75m on W side and c. 2m on S side (see plan in Cotter 1994, 109). In W wall of tower, at ground-floor level, is remains of double-splayed slit window. At same level, S wall of tower has pair of pointed-arch recesses (H 1.5m; Wth c.1.6m) containing small chambers with metal and wood doors, said locally to have been bee-boles; corresponding rebuilding on exterior wall-face indicates these were originally slit windows. South wall also has blocked ope at 1st-floor level, almost completely obscured by ivy. Surviving sections of S curtain wall (L c. 22m) featureless; SE corner missing. Only features noted on W curtain wall are two lintelled windows in square-set arched embrasures set close together, close to NW corner. Near W end of N curtain wall is a square-set arched embrasure with window seats but missing its light. Mid-way along N wall, breach (Wth c. 4m) may have been entrance; traces of ingoing survives on W side. To E of this gap traces of covering arch probably remains of window embrasure. Further E is window of which only W ingoing survives. At E end of N wall is 2-bay shallow arcading on wall with arched recess under E bay; much of W arch collapsed, wall face underneath damaged. NE corner is missing (breach here c. 2m wide) and the original form of this is uncertain . To S of breach, in E curtain wall, are two double-splayed window embrasures containing wide lintelled lights with sockets for glazing bars. Midway along E wall are remains of fireplace; N side survives, projecting slightly into interior, with part of a segmental arch with plank-centring; outer wall of fireplace collapsed. To S of fireplace N ingoing of a window embrasure marks end of surviving section of E curtain wall. A Condon castle, passed to Sherlock family in late 16th century (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 192).   Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey T-plan house with attic, built c. 1680, facing east and having two-pile two-storey addition of c. 1900 at right angles to front elevation, latter having two-storey box-bay projection to south side, and later flat-roof two-bay two-storey addition to south-west angle. Pitched slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks, that to north gable being heavy and projecting, timber consoles to front elevation and to elevations of double-pile addition, and with bargeboards to gables of latter. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with mullioned and transomed timber casement windows to front elevation, in triple, quadruple and five-light arrangements. Double six-pane and double three-pane timber casement windows and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to rear elevation, and six-over-six pane and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and four-pane timber casement windows to gable of return, with two-over-two pane and six-over-six pane windows to flat-roof addition. Flat-roof timber canopy over entrance in northern gable of double-pile addition, having carved timber brackets over entrance comprising long square-headed paned overlight, with timber lintel below over square-headed timber panelled door flanked by four-pane fixed timber sidelights with render sills. Cut limestone carriage archway to rear, leading to courtyard of outbuildings, and having limestone imposts, string course to parapet and decorative double-leaf cast-iron gates, set to rubble sandstone walls. Multiple-bay two-storey outbuilding having three-bay single-storey lean-to to rear with corrugated-iron roof, main block having pitched slate roof, rubble limestone walls, square-headed fixed timber windows, square-headed metal doors, with remains of segmental-arched vehicular entrance. Lean-to has corrugated-iron roof, coursed roughly dressed limestone walls, square-headed openings with limestone block and start surrounds, having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with limestone sills and replacement metal doors. Remains of medieval Leitrim Castle to grounds of house. Painted rendered square-profile piers to road entrance, with rendered boundary walls.
