• CO017-086 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  In walled orchard, part of demesne of Doneraile Court (14887). No visible surface trace of castle. Castle here reputedly built by MacWilliam Mór Synan in 1402, and sold in 1630 to Sir William St Leger (Healy 1988, 326). St Leger built new house on site; this 'new mansion house' greatly impressed Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork (MacCarthy-Morrogh 1986, 168). House burnt in 1645 and subsequently repaired (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 45); estate map of 1728 (ibid., 20) shows house, named 'castle', with geometric gardens to SE. By 1750 house in ruins (Smith 1750, 330) and located in 'small grove'. Marked 'site of Doneraile Court' on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Rectangular timber (min. L 3m; Wth 0.29m), hollowed out along most of its length and with dowel holes in the upper surface of each side, was found in 1990 c. 600m to SE on E bank of Awbeg River. Sample of timber (Q9440) dendrochronologically dated to AD 1510± 9 years (Cotter and Egan 1997, 162-5); date suggests that timber may be associated with castle. See Excavations 2003, 58.   Description

  On E side of Doneraile, c. 400m S of site of castle (14304). Built to design of Isaac Rothery for St Leger family c. 1730 but probably incorporating part of earlier house built in 1725 which itself may incorporate part of late-17th century house (Bence-Jones 1978, 105; de Breffny and ffolliott 1975, 91; Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 43-7). House restored by Irish Georgian Society and now occupied by caretaker. Entrance front (NE) overlooks parkland with winding approach avenue and Awbeg River. Front 7-bays wide with central 3-bay breakfront; central round-headed door ope with Ionic columns supporting scroll pediment, now incorporated into early 19th-century balustraded porch. Sash windows have moulded surrounds with scroll keystones on two upper storeys; lead fire-plaque dated '1725' above one of upper windows. Bow ends added in late 18th century. House burnt 1805; during reconstruction SE side elevation extended with bow at SW end making garden front (SE) of 3 bays between bow ends. Two-storey dining room, added on NW side in 1869- removed in mid 1980's. Warren of corridors and rooms in basement; brick wine vaults in corner; in 1825 brick arch inserted on S side to contain water tank. Reused stone mullion and jamb stones in basement window of SW bow of SE elevation may have come from nearby castle (14304). Outbuildings and meat store on SW side of house. Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 478) refers to conservatory built c. 1825; known as the orangery, it had 9 tall window opes in S wall with central masonry wall (portion of which survives) with 3 wide brick arches; partially dismantled c. 1970-76 (pers. comm. A. Montgomery). Walled garden to SW. Farmyard to W with farm building known as 'The Mill'; transmission shaft present in building used as part of horse-powered machinery (pers. comm. A. Montgomery). Demesne, now part of Doneraile Amenity Park, contains numerous estate features including ha-ha, deer park, 3 bridges over river, impounded ponds, lime walks, tree rings etc. (Crowley 1983). On N side of village is imposing entrance sweep with Ionic entrance archway and gate lodge. Avenue Bridge (long axis N-S; Wth 6.15m) has three semicircular arches (span c. 4m), bluntly pointed breakwaters on upstream side with decorative niches overhead; according to local information, built in 1800. Fish pond/ canal, c. 400m SE of house, described by Smith (1750, 329) as '370 yards long, and 140 broad'. Upper canal supplied by waterwheel, described by Young in 1770s (1892, 306) 'as an improvement on the Persian, which raises a regular stream 28 feet'. Mound in demesne, beside possible standing stone (10187), said to be result of excavation of fish ponds, and was used as vantage point during hunting.   Within Doneraile demesne, below crest of hill, on W-facing slope. Roughly circular area (42m N-S) enclosed by scarp (H 0.8m), with slight internal lip to SW; external fosse (D 0.15m).   Description

  On W side of road, at N end of Doneraile. Wedge-shaped graveyard (c. 60m N-S; c. 100m E-W at N end and c. 60m E-W at S end), enclosed by stone wall; entrance gateway to E. To N of centre is C of I parish church of Doneraile (14716). Graveyard still used; burial area mainly to S and E of church. Many 18th- and 19th-century headstones and some chest tombs; Grove White lists most of these (1905-25, vol. 3, 37; 1892-4b; 1895-7) and notes families buried in vaults under church. Low uninscribed grave markers throughout, though some recently displaced. Uncertain if this site of church of 'Dunrayl' listed in Papal Taxation of 1291; Shine (1989, 46) suggests this was probably located in nearby Oldcourt graveyard (14613). Present site may date to 1633 when Sir William St Leger built church adjacent to his residence (14304).   Description

  In graveyard (14582), on N side of Doneraile. C of I parish church of Doneraile. Rectangular gable-ended slate-roofed church (23.4m E-W; 12.79m N-S) with 3-storey embattled tower at W end. Walls rendered over roughly-coursed limestone construction, bottom course of limestone blocks atop shallow plinth; top of arch visible on plinth in S wall indicates position of burial vault under nave. Slim clasping square column at each corner, crowned by pinnacle. Interior lit by four pointed windows in both N and S wall: sash windows with switch-line glazing, and by central pointed stain-glass window in E wall with Y-tracery. Nave windows framed outside by shallow trefoil-arched rebates; string course along wall links spring point of each arch. East window, and pointed niche on either side, are framed by similar rebates linked by slim engaged Doric column crowned with pinnacle; central trefoil-arch highest, with prominent keystone inscribed with date 'AD 1815'. Tower at W gable is off-centre to S. Each floor marked externally by string course. Round-headed doorway in S wall is cut into frame of higher earlier doorway (now blocked). Tower contains ring of six bells given to church in 1889 (Cole 1903, 199; Dukes 1994, 80). Tower had spire which was blown down c. 1825 (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 478). At E end of N wall of church is small 1-storey ornate porch, once private entrance of the St Ledger family of Doneraile Court (14887). Internal walls of church are lined with three tiers of open wooden colonnades, rising from solid panel base to roof; late-18th and 19th century memorial plaques and tablets on walls, including St. Ledger's marble monument of 1759 (Grove White 1892-4). Open king-post type timber roof overhead. Also pews, pulpit, altar organ etc., many of these dating from improvements made in 1890-1910 (Cole 1903, 199). Inscribed stone on W wall of tower reads: 'This church was first built by the right Hon. Sir William St. Ledger, the Lord President of Munster, Anno Domini 1633, and afterwards built by his grandson, the Right Honourable Arthur Lord Viscount Doneraile, Anno Domini 1726'. Illustrated in 1728 estate map shows church as small rectangular gabled building, with central east window and three windows in S wall with possible door at W end, and indistinct tower on W gable (Shine 1989, 53; Power and Sleeman 1992, 75). Smith in 1750 (vol. 1, 330) described it having a 'pretty spire, guilded ball, and a weathercock'. Date stone suggests nave rebuilt in 1815 leaving earlier tower at W end. In porch is an old bell with inscription recording its manufacture in 1636 and repair in 1700 (Cole ibid.; Dukes ibid.). Nearby is 17th-century circular stone baptismal font (diam. 0.41m; H 0.15m) with Latin inscription around rim; it was removed here when Rathgoggin C of I church (14723) was closed in 1960. The font now rests on a square stone pedestal (0.43m x 0.43m; H 0.55m) discovered at Cooliney House (14881); each face is carved with human figure standing under a rounded arch; although very weathered one figure clearly hold a shield in one hand and a sword in another, a second figure has its hands raised in prayer and may be wearing a crown. There is an engaged columns at each corner; the upper surface has a central circular straight-sided depression (diam. 0.23m; D 0.007m) with a drain hole. It may be 13th century in date.   Description

  On E side of Awbeg River, in demesne of Doneraile Court. Discovered in 1990 during construction of riverside walkway. Much disturbed spread of burnt material (L c. 30m; Wth c. 10m). Truncated timber (L 0.5m; Wth 0.18m; T 0.06m) found close by. Late medieval timber (see 14304) found close by to N.   Description

  In flat park land; within Deer Park of Doneraile demesne; in NW quadrant and adjoining NW side of large circular tree ring. Circular area (46m E-W; 42m N-S) defined by low rise (ext. H 0.36m); external fosse (D 0.24m); internal fosse (D 0.3m) SSE->N. Ridge forming arc and adjoining E bank cuts off sector of interior. Tree ring truncates fosse to NW. Inner fosse and internal partition may be later landscape features. Some large mature oak trees in interior. • CO017-123 Decoy pond
  Description

  In wet woodland, on W bank of Awbeg River, in demesne of Doneraile Court (14887). Described by Fox (1984, 114-115) as roughly-square pond (L c. 100 yds), with four semicircular promontories (c. 7-8 yds sq.) protruding from centre of each side, and circular island in centre. Possible decoy pipe extends at E corner. Fox notes similarity to Beaulieu decoy in Drogheda which was made c. 1730 (Fox, ibid.); Smith in 1750 (vol. 1, 330) refers to a 'fine decoy' at Doneraile. However, this area is shown as heavily wooded on 1842 OS 6-inch map (decoy not shown) and there was no memory of its use in late 19th century (Fox ibid.). • Doneraile Court, gates/railings/walls, 1820–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Boundary walls and gates, built c.1830, to Doneraile Demesne. Coursed limestone rubble walls to north, south and east of Doneraile town, having some blocked square-headed door openings, some areas of repair and alteration and one recent entrance. Quadrant gateway with triumphal arch style entrance at north end of standing section of wall. Square-profile ashlar limestone outer piers terminating snecked ashlar quadrant walls, with moulded copings and plinth courses. Gateway proper has central vehicular opening flanked by lower pedestrian openings, with channelled ashlar limestone walls, cut-stone plinths, moulded archivolts and impost course, moulded stepped cornice, and engaged Ionic columns on tooled stone plinths flanking vehicular archway and supporting projecting ends of stepped moulded cornice. Single- and double-leaf ornate wrought-iron gates. Blocked square-headed door opening with rubble stone voussoirs to south. Current smaller entrance to Doneraile Park to south, almost opposite Catholic church, comprises curved rubble stone quadrant entrance walls having square-profile ashlar limestone inner piers with plinths and moulded caps, with decorative double-leaf wrought-iron vehicular gates, flanked to south by rebuilt pedestrian entrance with decorative wrought-iron gate. Recent entrance further to south, attached to gable of recent building. Curving corner at south-west corner of demesne wall may indicate possible original entrance at this location.

• Doneraile Court, bridge, 1720–1740 · Regional interest
  Description

  Triple-arch road bridge over River Awbeg, built c. 1730. Bridge has two distinct elevations. East is plainer, with dressed stone voussoirs to arches. Tooled limestone detailing to west, upstream, elevation includes voussoirs, roundels to spandrels each side of middle arch, string course over tops of arches, and stepped V-cutwaters with ashlar coursed capping. Coursed limestone rubble walls to each elevation, with tooled facing to carriageway side of parapets, having tooled copings, with moulded caps to terminating piers.

• Doneraile Court, country house, 1640–1735 · National interest
  Description

  Detached three-storey over half basement country house, built c. 1730, containing fabric of earlier house, built c. 1645. Possibly also incorporating fabric of medieval castle. Extended 1805, conservatory added 1825, extended 1869, and also incorporating other nineteenth-century additions. Entrance front (north-east) is seven-bay three-storey, having very shallow three-bay breakfront with porch having balustraded roof, and three-bay bow ends. South-east elevation has three-bay three-storey centre flanked by three-bay bows. South-west rear elevation is three-bay four-storey, with single-and-two storey addition. North-west side elevation is three-bay four-storey flanked by four-storey bow to north-west and recessed two-bay four-storey elevation of south-west elevation to south-west. Three-bay east block with three-bay curved bow to south and three-bay rectangular-plan block to south, with former dining room to south-west now demolished. Kitchens and game store to south and conservatory to south-east. Hipped and pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks having decorative terracotta chimney pots and moulded tooled limestone cornice and eaves course. Some cast-iron rainwater goods. Coursed squared rubble walls with tooled limestone quoins and string courses. Square-headed window openings, with moulded limestone surrounds to ground and upper floors of entrance and south-east elevations, having decorative curvilinear keystones to first and second floors of entrance elevation. Six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to top floor, nine-over-nine pane to first and ground floors, with temporary timber boards to ground floor window openings, and blocked square-headed two-light basement window openings having tooled limestone mullions. Original frames to non-bowed parts of north-west and south-west elevations. Top floor of bows and of south-west elevation have three-over-six pane windows. Round-headed window openings to return of south-west elevation, second floor having margined fixed timber small-pane window, and first floor having temporary timber boards with decorative leaded window to interior having coloured glass. Oval window opening to ground floor rear boarded and having fixed pane batwing elliptical timber framed window to interior. Single-storey additions to south-east link to multiple-bay two-storey outbuilding. Game-store has octagonal hipped slate roof, pitched slate to link, with coursed limestone rubble walls. Camber-headed window openings to game store, with red brick voussoirs and boarded, with double six-over-six pane replacement timber sliding sash windows visible to interior. Most recently in use as kitchen, having flagstone floor. Game hanging rack to interior first floor. Square-headed boarded window opening to link, with red brick voussoirs and replacement six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window visible to interior. Square-headed boarded door opening with red brick voussoirs and replacement timber doors to interior.   Ruins of conservatory, built 1825, originally nine-bay and single-storey. Curved limestone ashlar wall to east with curved moulded copings, and coursed limestone rubble walls to west and south. Three segmental arches to west wall having red brick voussoirs. Two limestone steps to interior leading through centre arch up to oval ornamental pool. Limestone surround covered in temporary timber boards. Flight of rendered steps to north and south, having render copings and ball finials. Rubble limestone boundary walls to site. Pedestrian entrance to north having square-plan rendered piers and single-leaf wrought-iron gate, with ball finial caps and flight of rendered steps having ball finial.

  Outbuildings to south-west of Doneraile Court, built c. 1825, comprising eleven-bay two-storey south range with single-storey two-bay projection to north, six-bay single-storey west range and three-bay single-storey north range. Now disused. South range having remains of pitched slate roof with some clay ridge tiles. Coursed limestone rubble walls with some lime render. Red brick cladding to north gable of north projection. Square-headed window openings having limestone sills and some traces of six-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door openings having peck-dressed voussoirs and timber battened doors. Five round-headed arch openings having peck-dressed voussoirs, with some red brick voussoirs. Having some double-leaf corrugated-iron doors and some double-leaf timber battened doors, one retaining decorative cast-iron hinges. Roofless west range having coursed limestone walls, with gables to north and south. Square-headed window and door openings with inserted iron H-bar lintels and no fittings. Currently being restored. Roofless north range having coursed limestone walls with gables to east and west, square-headed window and door openings with no remaining fittings, currently being restored. Entrance gateway to courtyard comrpises ashlar limestone piers with caps and plinths and having carved limestone finials, with timber battened double-leaf gate.

  Quadrant entrance gateway to Doneraile Park, built c. 1730, having gate lodge to south side. Coursed limestone rubble entrance walls terminating in square-profile limestone ashlar piers with moulded plinth and caps, latter with ball finials. Decorative double-leaf wrought-iron vehicular gates flanked by single-leaf wrought-iron pedestrian gates. Three-bay single-storey gate lodge has hipped slate roof with squared limestone rubble double-flue chimneystack, painted roughcast rendered lined walls and square-headed window openings with tooled limestone sills having timber latticed casement windows, and square-headed door opening having replacement timber door. Wrought-iron railings defines demesne side of gate lodge.

• Doneraile Court, gate lodge, 1820–1840 · Regional interest

  Detached three-bay single-storey T-plan gate lodge, built c.1830, at west side of Doneraile Park. Recent three-bay extension to rear, recessed slightly from side elevations of original block. Pedimented Doric prostyle tetrastyle portico to front elevation with steps, and pedimented gables to side elevations. Pitched slate roofs to original block and flat roof to extension. Moulded cornice to original block. Snecked dressed limestone walls, with cut-stone plinth and eaves course, latter with string course. Roughly coursed rubble limestone walls to extension. Square-headed windows to front and side elevations of original block with moulded limestone surrounds and cut limestone sills having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to extension. Square-headed doorway with moulded limestone surround and timber panelled door. Building set inside triumphal arch gateway, with ha-ha to parkland to north.

• Doneraile Court, ornamental canal/lake, 1820–1840 · Regional interest

  Ornamental canal, constructed c. 1830, in demesne of Doneraile Court. Comprises two rectangular water bodies, western being long and eastern being shorter, with narrow channels from west into larger body, between water bodies and outlet from smaller body. Small pedestrian bridges cross channels.

  Free-standing single-arch humpback bridge over Awbeg River, built c. 1780. Dressed limestone walls with segmental arch having dressed and channelled rusticated voussoirs, and dressed limestone parapet wall with recent metal railings.
