- CO087-133 Enclosure
Description
This enclosure (37.5m x 31m), which is defined by a fosse, predates and is truncated by a rath (CO087-030----) and was identified during a geophysical survey prior to pre-development archaeological testing on a large housing development named Herons Wood at Carrigaline Middle (Sherlock 2002; 2004, 62-3). Only the W arc of the fosse (L c. 30m) which lay outside the rath at W was excavated. The sides of the fosse (Wth 1.6m; D 0.9m) sloped regularly to a flat base (Wth 0.3-0.4m) and it was filled with a stony silty clay. No archaeological features were noted in the W portion of the interior, which was excavated. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO087-134 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
Archaeological testing was carried out in advance of a large multi-phase housing development at Carrigaline Middle in 2001. Two pits were uncovered immediately W of a rath (CO087-030----). The first of these pits (1.1m N-S; 2.4m E-W) was irregularly shaped while the second (0.5m N-S; 0.3m E-W) was subcircular in plan. Both pits consisted of a soft grey silty material. A stony area (1m N-S; 0.55m E-W) lay immediately to the W. (Sherlock 2002) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO087-135 Pit-burial
Description
During archaeological test-trenching in advance of a housing development, a pit (c. 0.35m x 0.25m; D 0.15m) was discovered. The pit contained a dark charcoal-rich fill with inclusions of cremated bone. The eastern side and base of the pit appeared to be delineated by two relatively flat pieces of limestone. The pit shares similar characteristics with two other pit-burials (CO087-138----; CO087-140----) found in the vicinity. (Sherlock 2002, 9-10) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO087-136 Burnt spread
Description
An oblong spread (2.1m E-W; 0.45m N-S) of charcoal-enriched soil was identified during archaeological test-trenching in 2001 in advance of a proposed housing development (Sherlock 2002, 11, feature 5). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO087-137 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
Archaeological testing was carried out in advance of a large multi-phase housing development at Carrigaline Middle in 2001. A feature, uncovered in trench I, was situated c. 5.5m to the NNW of a rath (CO087-030----). The feature was initially identified in a geophysical survey as a large subcircular anomaly, measuring c. 10m in diameter. The feature and its fill, recorded as a compact, silty, stony material, was excavated to a depth of 1.7m below surface level before safety issues precluded any further excavation. (Sherlock 2002) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO087-138 Pit-burial
Description
During archaeological test-trenching in advance of a housing development, a pit (diam. 0.28m; D 0.15m) was discovered. The pit contained a dark charcoal-rich fill with inclusions of cremated bone. A piece of limestone appears to define the northern edge of the pit. The pit shares similar characteristics with two other pit-burials (CO087-135----; CO087-140----) found in the vicinity. (Sherlock 2002, 13) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
- CO087-139 Excavation - miscellaneous
Description
Following archaeological test-trenching in advance of a multi-phase housing development at Carrigaline Middle, a small area of scorched reddish-orange soil was discovered. There were areas of dark charcoal-rich material with inclusions of burnt bone and heat-shattered sub-angular stones, possibly indicative of a burnt mound, immediately to the N and S. (Sherlock 2002) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
