• CO033-004 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Site of Short Castle or Castle Gar. No visible surface trace of castle; area now part of Mallow town. Scene of intense fighting in 1642 after which it was destroyed (Grove White 1905-25 vol. 4, 82-3; Gillman 1896a, 22-4). • CO033-006001 Graveyard
  Description

  On S side of main street in Mallow; formerly approached by avenue from street but this now converted to public road. Subrectangular graveyard (c. 85m E-W; c. 60m N-S), lined by mature trees. Enclosed to N by stone wall and N wall of ruin of former C of I parish church of Mallow (14719), to E and S by partially rebuilt stone wall; open to W where present C of I parish church and hall stand. Unpublished report (Anon. 1976, 8) notes church papers dated 1692 referring to agreement to build walls around precincts of church; Bolster (1971, 12) refers to graveyard once extending c. 50m further to N and to E. Interior slopes down noticeably to S. Earliest headstone noted dated 1684; headstones generally date from early 18th to 19th century; also contains a number of chest tombs, concentrated in NW corner. Earliest memorial inside ruined church (14719) dated 1595; inscribed stone plaque dated 1649 inserted in N wall. Architectural fragments and dressed stone noted in graveyard (Zajac et al. 1995, 75). • CO033-006002 Church
  Description

  In Mallow; part of N boundary of graveyard (14606). Former C of I parish church of Mallow; dedicated to St Anne though named 'St Mary's' on OS 6-inch map. Comprises roofless rectangular nave (int.: 23.48m E-W; 8.03m N-S) with tower at W end and apse at E end. Nave built of random-rubble limestone with quoins, walls topped by concave ashlar cornice. Five round-headed window opes in S wall, of roughly-dressed stones; at W end partially blocked door ope. Nave gable-ended to W, with central ground-floor door giving entry from tower. Ledge and joist holes at W end of nave indicate position of gallery, access to which was gained through 1st-floor door in tower (now blocked). Curved apse added to E end of nave; central part of apse wall now completely missing. Tall 4-storey tower (2.94m E-W; 3.62m N-S) added to W end of nave: two upper storeys divided by band course on external elevation. Blocked entrance door in S wall. Bluntly pointed door ope in W wall gave access to stairs up to gallery door- part of timber stairs in situ. Interior of church long used for burial; earliest plaque, on N wall, is dated 1694; beneath church is burial vault of Jephson family of Mallow Castle (14273). Church is late 17th/early 18th century appearance- similar in design to Ballynamona C of I Church (9571). In 1692 reported that 'church much damnified in the late wars, but since well repaired' (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 322-333). By 1817 church considered beyond repair, and by 1820 replaced by St James Church built immediately to W and design by Pain brothers (Caplice 1990, 36-38): random-rubble-limestone construction with cut stone detail; wide rectangular nave with shallow gabled transepts at E end and smaller gabled projections at W end; buttresses on corners; chancel to E flanked by one storey embattled vestry/store; pointed window opes throughout with cut stone surrounds. Originally built to accommodate 800 persons, much improved in 1873 with removal of galleries reducing capacity to about half with new seating and heating system installed (ibid.).   Description

  In Mallow, on S side of Davis Street; C of I Church (14719) adjacent to SW. Two-storey rectangular structure (long axis NW-SE) forms part of street line; rendered with exposed chamfered limestone quoins. Front elevation (NE) of 4-bay arcade with semicircular arches; 3 bays at SE end obscured by added projecting shopfronts; SE bay not visible; central two bays visible within shop; NW bay open for passage through building to rear. Area to rear known locally as 'the shambles'. Round-headed window opes on 1st floor, central ope blocked, two smaller sash windows replace ope at SE end. • CO033-007002 Spa works/bath
  Description

  In Mallow, c. 40m S of Lady's Well (14038) and built over Spa Well (14039). Indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map, named 'Spa House' at end of 'Spa Walk', which ran parallel to canalised stream. Two-storey ornate L-shaped structure: steeply pitched gable-ended roof with two modern chimney stacks; 1-storey gabled porch with dormer in angle of L; gables infilled with half timbering, variety of windows used throughout including bay, oriel, and tripartite windows. Recently modernised with stone-work exposed and windows replaced- formerly had decorative barge boards, latticed windows and numerous individual chimney stacks (photograph, Myers 1984, 13). Stone-lined well accommodated within (14039). Mallow Spa became popular resort in 1720s (Smith 1750, vol. 1, 327). Spa House built in 1828; designed by George Pain in neo-Tudor style. Described by Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 339) as containing 'a small pump-room, an apartment for medical consultation, a reading-room and baths; the whole fitted up...for supplying...salt-water, vapour, and medicated baths'. According to Myers (ibid. 14) Spa well dedicated to St Patrick as holy well before its medicinal qualities were discovered, although Lewis (ibid.) refers to a dedication to St Peter. In 1857 Sir Denhem Jephson Norreys piped Spa water to specially-constructed watering place on W side of Spa walk, for general use; this survives as sunken rectangular area enclosed by ashlar limestone wall- steps lead down from street to paved area with sunken trough along W wall, filled with water from mouth of three stone lion heads- known locally as 'The Dogs Heads'. Three cast iron water pumps atop platform to rear. The Spa went into decline in 1840s; several attempts made to revive it in late-19th-century, with no success (Myers ibid., 16).   Description

  In pasture, c. 40m N of Spa House (14789). Warm spring forming small pond, with stream flowing from NW side. Not in holy use. Known locally as "spa well". According to Brück (1987, 45-8), largest of Mallow warm spring group 'being 13.6m in diameter and several metres deep in centre'.   Description

  Abandoned rectangular 3-storey structure in Mallow, adjoining W end of farm buildings of Mallow Castle Demesne (14872). Indicated as L-shaped structure named 'County Infirmary' on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Entrance front (S) of 5 bays; random-rubble limestone construction; central flat brick-arched door ope; flat brick-arched window opes (frames removed), 2nd floor window has moulded 18th century sill; brick cornice under eaves. Shallow hipped slate roof, in very poor repair. West elevation of 2 bays with blind windows. West elevation prolonged to N by addition of 2-bays of similar construction, making overall plan L-shaped. Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 341) described it as 'a neat plain building ... at present, accommodating 14 patients, but is capable of containing 30'. • CO033-093 Historic town
  Description

  On N bank of Blackwater River (see 14793), on main Cork-Limerick road. Though Anglo-Normans probably had castle (14373) here in late 12th century, earliest references to town are murage grant of 1286 (Zajac et al. 1995, 73) and reference in 1298 to 'the burgagers of the vill of Mallow' (Berry 1894, 17). By this time Mallow manor was a possession of Fitzgeralds of Desmond (ibid.). Thomas (1992, vol. 2, 232) is doubtful if town was ever walled. Survey of 1584 found nine 'vills' within manor of Mallow, all 'now lying waste' (Berry 1893, 22); four of these appear to contain settlements, none of which is named Mallow though 'The Shorte Castell' contained 'a great town' (ibid.; see 14313). Town re-established as part of Munster Plantation and by 1611 twenty five settlers 'held houses and gardens in the towne of Mallow' (Berry 1906, 11); by 1641 town contained 'nearly 200 houses, thirty of which were of stone, strong and slated' (ibid., 14), but it suffered greatly in 1642 when the Irish 'set fire to the town in several places' (ibid., 15). However, town survived and in 1659 had a population of 463. It further developed in 18th and 19th centuries as market and spa town (Myers 1984; Crowley 1992, 1993, 1997). Principal buildings of present town of 18th- and 19th-century date though some may contain late 17th-century core; two recently demolished houses on Davis Street (see photograph Zajac et al. 1995, 72), part of terrace of four houses, contained 'central dividing wall composed of timber uprights, 0.01m apart, with mud infilling between them, and timber laths nailed across the uprights' (ibid., 73). Recent archaeological investigations at E end of town did not reveal any features earlier than late 17th century (pers. comm. S. Lane). Former parish church (14719) on S side of Main Street.
