• DG053-054 Burnt mound
  Description

  Located on an east-facing slope of a field to the north of a tributary of the River Swilly. In 2004 a burnt mound was discovered at this location during monitoring of works associated with the Letterkenny sewerage improvement scheme. The burnt mound was subsequently fully excavated (04E1473). The site presented as a deposit of charcoal-stained clay with much burnt stone. The main concentration of burnt material was a maximum of 5m long and 3m wide. The original mound had been disturbed as a result of agricultural activity and only the lower part survived, to a depth of 0.05-0.18m. This overlay fine grey sand with some charcoal. Agricultural activity had resulted in the deposition of burnt material to the east of the main mound. There was no evidence for a hearth associated with the burnt mound and no finds were recovered. Samples of charcoal indicated that wood four tree species was used: hazel, alder, holly and willow. A post medieval field drain was uncovered 8m to the east of the burnt mound. (McQuade 2007, 81). • DG053-057 Souterrain
  Description

  In Letterkenny, located within a town park bordered on the N side by St. Conall’s Hospital. This souterrain was uncovered in 1997 during the construction of the park. The accidental removal of a roof slab by a mechanical digger created a hole (0.8m by 0.77m) in the roof of an E–W chamber (max. Wth 1.38m; L c. 3.6m E-W; H 1.53m). The drystone walls, constructed of rough-cut stones, are vertical for about half their height, and above this, are gradually corbelled to support a roof of five stone lintels, one of which was removed by the digger. At its W end, the chamber narrows (Wth 0.64m) to a possible passageway but this was blocked with a fall of earth and stones and could not be examined. There is a recess (H 0.31m; Wth 0.42m; D 0.52m) in the E wall, and another (H 0.33m; Wth 0.45m; D 0.72m) in the S wall, close to the point where the chamber begins to narrow. (pers. comm.   Description

  Freestanding former hospital chapel associated with St. Conal’s psychiatric hospital (see 40500012), built 1935, comprising nine-bay double-height hall with canted apse to the west end, projecting two-bay single-storey sacristy to the south-west corner, single-bay single-storey entrance porches to the east gable end and to the north-west, and with shallow projecting confessionals to the centre of the north and south elevations. Now in use as restaurant and community centre. Pitched slate roof to main body of building with moulded cut stone eaves course, raised rendered verges to the gable ends with cross finials over gable apex and with scrolled console kneeler stones to eaves, and some surviving sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched natural slate roof to sacristy having with moulded cut stone eaves course, raised rendered verges to the south gable end with scrolled console kneeler stones to eaves. Hipped natural slate roof to apse to west having moulded cut stone eaves course. Hipped natural slate roof to porch to the north having moulded cut stone eaves course. Pitched natural slate roof to porch to the east gable end having moulded cut stone eaves course, raised rendered verges to the east gable with cross finial over gable apex and with scrolled console kneeler stones to eaves. Mono-pitched cut stone roofs to confessional projections. Roughcast rendered walls with ashlar sandstone plinth course, ashlar sandstone pilasters between bays and to corners of main body of building, apse, porches, and sacristy, and with round-headed ashlar sandstone arcades to east and west gable ends of main body of building. Round-arched window openings with ashlar sandstone block-and-start surrounds, chamfered ashlar sills, replacement windows, and with cut stone hoodmouldings over. Circular octofoil window opening to the east gable end having ashlar sandstone surround, ashlar tracery, leaded stained glass windows, and with cut stone hoodmoulding over. Roundel openings beneath windows to nave and to confessionals having ashlar sandstone surrounds with glass insets. Square-headed door openings to porches with ashlar sandstone surrounds, and double-leaf timber panelled doors with fielded panels. Round-headed door opening to interior of porch with double-leaf half-glazed timber panelled doors having leaded stained glass and fanlight. Tripartite stucco round-arched arcade to chancel with Ionic-Corinthian pilasters. Canted vaulted stucco ceiling to nave with painted cast-iron air vents and corbelled hood mouldings to windows and entrances. Set back from road in shared grounds to the south of St. Conal’s psychiatric hospital (see 40500012) to the north of the centre of Letterkenny.

• St. Conal's Psychiatric Hospital, hospital/infirmary, 1860–1905 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached multiple-bay two-and-three-storey psychiatric hospital, built c. 1860-5 and extended c. 1872, 1876, 1886, 1893 and possibly in 1902-4, comprising gabled three-bay two-storey projecting central section with pediment flanked to east and west by four-bay two-storey wings, with further five-bay two-storey pavilion projections, forming main central section of building. Symmetrical three-storey wings to east and west of main central section comprising slightly recessed nine-bays blocks with projecting two-bay three-storey towers to end bays, towers flanked by further end blocks comprising four-bay two-storey canted projections, and recessed five-bay two-storey wings. Extensive complex of multi-period single and two-storey extensions and returns to rear (north), courtyards, laundry block, service staircases, former stables and service buildings. Pitched and hipped natural and artificial slate roofs with mansard roofs to towers, yellow brick chimneystacks with rendered coping and terracotta pots, pediment to central gabled bay, cornice eaves course, modillion brackets to towers, and profiled cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with stringcourses to sections, articulated rusticated block-and-start quoins to main central section and towers, painted brick block-and-start quoins to canted sections, rubble-stone and rendered plinth-courses. Square-headed window openings with painted brick dressings and cut sandstone surrounds to openings, principally with replacement windows with occasional sections of original and replacement timber sash windows with sandstone and concrete sills. Segmental-arch headed door openings with recessed sandstone surrounds to central section openings, square-headed door openings to outer blocks with rendered surrounds incorporating plain pilasters and glazed overlights, and timber panelled doors. Situated on an elevated site overlooking Letterkenny Town Park. Set within own grounds with associated buildings to surrounding site. Two outbuildings to the rear (north) having pitched corrugated metal roofs and rubble stone walls. Goods sheds with pitched natural slate roofs, rubble stone walls, and square-headed window openings with timber sliding sash windows.

• St. Conal's Psychiatric Hospital, hospital/infirmary, 1900–1910 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached multiple-bay three-storey over basement former psychiatric hospital associated with St. Conal's (see 40905317), built c. 1902-4, comprising central slightly projecting six-bay three-storey block having central clock tower over (on square-plan) surmounted with sheet lead and copper dome, flanking four-bay three-storey canted blocks, two-bay three-storey blocks to either side, and terminated by four-bay three-storey canted blocks. Four four-storey service staircase returns and multiple single- and two-storey returns and extensions to rear (north-west). Later in use as a college, now disused. Hipped artificial slate roofs with yellow brick chimneystacks having corniced coping, stringcourses and terracotta pots, and profiled cast-iron gutters and circular cast-iron downpipes. Sheet lead and copper to dome over clock tower having wrought-iron weathervane over. Roughcast rendered walls over coursed squared rubble stone plinth with chamfered cut sandstone stringcourse over, and with yellow brick block-and-start quoins to corners. Yellow brick walls to canted projections with rectangular roughcast rendered panels under window openings. Ashlar sandstone construction to clock tower having round clock faces to each face with moulded cut sandstone surrounds, ashlar sandstone pilasters to corners, and with cut stone cornice over with dentils. Square-headed window openings with yellow brick surrounds, rendered and stone sills, and having principally six-over-six, eight-over-eight and paired four-over-four pane horned timber sash windows (boarded-up to ground floor). Square-headed door opening to central bay having timber panelled double-doors with fielded panels, sidelights and overlight (boarded-up), and with stucco doorcase comprising Doric pilasters surmounted by entablature, and with segmental pediment over. Located to the north-east of the main hospital building at St. Conal’s hospital (see 40905317), and to the north of the centre of Letterkenny. Landscaped grounds to site.

• St. Conal's Psychiatric Hospital, graveyard/cemetery, 1860–1900 · Regional interest
  Description

  Former burial ground originally (on triangular-plan) serving St. Conal's psychiatric hospital (see 40905317), in use from c. 1866 until 1900. Now disused. Some metal memorials to site. Graveyard bounded by high squared rubble stone walls with squared rubble coping to the north-east and south, and with later blockwork repairs to various sections. Cut limestone gate-pier (on square-plan) to east side of gateway flat-bedded squared limestone coping over. Established pine tree planting within grounds with modern stone engraved ‘IN COMMEMORATION OF THOSE WHO WERE BURIED IN THIS CEMETERY 1866-1900 MAY THEY REST IN PEACE’. Burial ground located within St. Conal’s hospital complex (see 40905317 for main building), adjacent to three-storey block (see 40905318).

  Detached four-bay two-storey with dormer attic level former medical superintendent’s house associated with St. Conal's psychiatric hospital (see 40905317), built c. 1890, with gabled two-storey projections to the south and to the west elevations, two single-storey canted bays to the south elevation, and two-bay two-storey extension and single-storey service building extensions to the north-east. Now in use as offices and staff accommodation. Hipped and pitched artificial slate roofs with painted brick chimneystacks having articulated stringcourses, stepped coping, and terracotta pots, timber bargeboards to gables, exposed timber rafter end to eaves, gabled dormer windows with slate clad sides and timber bargeboards to gables, and with replacement rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with painted brick block-and-start quoins to first floor, painted brick walls at ground floor level with smooth render\stucco corniced stringcourse above openings, and with sloping smooth rendered ruled-and-lined plinth. Square-headed window openings with red brick block-and-start surrounds having various timber sliding sash windows some paired and tripartite), round-headed window openings to ground floor corner windows south-west angle having horned timber sash windows with coloured margin lights, round-arch headed window opening to ground floor of west elevation with modillion brackets supporting rendered pediment surmounted by ball finial, and replacement timber casement window. Stepped rendered sills to first floor, smooth rendered sills to ground floor. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door having brass door furniture and overlight. Located to the south-east of the main hospital building at St. Conal’s hospital (see 40905317), and to the north of the centre of Letterkenny. Landscaped grounds and lawned areas to site. Gateway to the north-west comprising a pair red brick gate piers (on square-plan) with moulded rendered coping over, and with a pair of mild steel gates. Gateway flanked to either side by quadrant sections of red brick walling with rendered coping over and terminated by red brick gate piers (on square-plan) with moulded rendered coping over. Pedestrian gateway to garden comprising a pair of red brick piers with pyramidal coping and hooped wrought-iron gate.
